If this has been asked before, someone please post a link to that thread.

Basically I have two cues that have Kumuai mediums on them but the tips are too tall. Literally if you were to stack four quarters, thats how tall these tips are.

Here is the issue, I have tried cutting tips down in the past and its hard to not destroy them by accident. Is there an easy trick to shave down a lamenated tip without destroying it?
 
Take it to a repairman,
Or you can spend some quality time with a rasp and hand shape it down.
 
i dont have the luxury of taking it to a repairman. I live in South Korea right now but I need to shave these tips down or else the will mushroom.

It CAN be done,but you have to have the right tools,and the right hands using the tools to do it. I know 100% because I did it for a few years before I got a lathe.

There is a cutter made by Joe Porper called the Mushroom Graser. It looks like a specialized pencil eraser with a knob on it for adjusting the depth. You'll also need tape to protect the ferrule,sandpaper,and a method of reshaping the tip afterwards.

I got good enough with it I can do as close to a perfect job with it as some that do it WITH a lathe. It took me about 20 tips on junk shafts before I got to that point too.

This is where hands-on skill from something like building models as a kid will really help.

Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. Just don't try it on a really nice shaft unless you really trust your hands,and try to find a meaningless shaft or one that is broken to practice on before moving to your good stuff. Tommy D.
 
If you know anybody at the Red Horse squadron on Osan, ask if the machine shop can shave the tips for you. Vehicle maintenance has a machine shop, too, as does the aircraft maintenance shops. There's probably 30 or more lathes on base. You just gotta ask around. I know things are different now but when I was in, we all networked & helped one another with just about anything.
 
cue cube works well. for a few dollars more you could get an ultimate tip tool which has the nickle and dime radius shapers, tip tapper, a burnisher, and sanding strips on the side to trim the diameter of the tip down. either of these two tools will work, i am sure there are more tools besides these two.
 
If you absolutely cannot get to a lathe, then the best option you have is to get a curved tip shaper for a couple bucks, put some 80 or 100 grit sandpaper in it, and start working. It will take a while, but you can do it. Before I had a lathe, I used to put a pin in the shaft, the chuck the pin up in a cordless drill to spin it while I worked the tip down. Like Tommy, I made numerous mistakes and trashed a few ferrules and tips, but eventually, I got pretty good at it. There are many ways to do things, but that doesn't mean any of them are the wrong way. Use what you have at your disposal.

thanks for everyone's input!

I was thinking about cutting it flat just above where I really want it at then grinding it down with sand paper.
