Shooting in Dekalb, IL / NIU?

I'm going to be attending NIU for my last two years of undergrad (hopefully) and I was hoping to gain a little more information about the local pool spots. I've been to the tables at the Holmes Student Center, and as a serious player, I'll never return. Are there any other spots in the area, or even within a half hour's drive? I'm a big-table player, so a place with all barboxes might not appeal too greatly to me.
 
There was a shooting NIU with a lot of students shot dead. This makes the title of your thread seem in pretty in bad taste. Let this thread go and start another with a better title.
 
At least you'll be closer to the Carom Room. Not too sure what is going on pool wise in Dekalb, but last I heard, not much. Good choice of schools. Good luck. P.S. Maybe there is a TAP league nearby. ;)

The title's not in bad taste. It may carry a second meaning if you disregard the fact that I'm in a pool forum. And my cousin was there, he was the only guy in his classroom who stood up to hold the doors shut when the shots began. I'm aware of the school shooting. You're being overly sensitive.

Everyone else, thanks for the info. Rockford might not be a bad idea, but it depends on how long it takes me to get there. I wish there was a N/S expressway out by there so I wouldn't have to take country roads to get from place to place.

You acknowledge your thread could be seen as having a second meaning but you say "oh well.. if it does it's not my problem. They're just over sensitive."

I'm enough of a cynic/a$$hole that I think maybe you wrote the title of the thread with the intent to make people think the thread was about yet another shooting in Dekalb and in that manner get more attention and get more response/answers for you. I guess I'm just an over sensitive a$$hole... or you're just an insensitve sociopath? :groucho:

Oh..... maybe try Route 36/59. N/S expressway. I know it doesn't go to your front door but it is a n/s expressway and it leads to either Rt. 64 or Rt 88.

If your thinking about going to Rockford you might as well keep going to Beloit and try the Carom room (as previously recommended) nice place good tables 9' and 7'. Heard they are going to get new 9' Diamonds.
When I went there they had a $5 a day deal, think it might be from opening until 3pm.

To put it simply, I didn't recognize the secondary meaning until you mentioned it because, like I said before, I'm posting a thread in a pool forum. When I talk about shooting, I mean shooting pool and nothing more. So when you jump on my dog about being purposefully insensitive and asking to retract and start a new thread, I'm going to jump at you because I know you're overreacting.

Mind you, you're the only person who's complained and taken the title out of the context of the forum it's posted in. You're not going to get me to say that I did it intentionally or that I'm going to take it down. So let's agree to disagree, yeah?

Jim: Are you picking fights again? John is a very respectful young man who spends a little time at Red Shoes and I am sure Mr. Lavin who has seen a lot more of him than I have, would vouch for his character. I think he just got his back up when he felt attacked.

John: Jim is a good guy who traveled hundreds of miles to come to a tournament at Red Shoes where he spent time chatting with Sailor, Freddy, George Fels, and many others at one of the straight pool tournaments up there.

It would be nice if you two could make up. I think that if you met each other in person, nothing like this would happen.
 
The best place around you would be the Carom Room. Dave Coles owns the place, and will go out of his way to help you with any cue work you need done. The food is outstanding too! And like another poster said, hes got 7 new Diamond 9 footers coming in September to go along with his 14 Diamond 7footers with pro-cut pockets. Hes also got a nice snooker table and a heated 3 cushion table. Its a really great place with lots of fun, action, and atmosphere.

I love the Carom Room! It's about an hour drive from the apartment I'm renting, but that's sounding like a good weekend spot!

Look for a guy named Duane Tuula also, helluva good guy, he will never steer you wrong. There are a lot of good players, and a lot of action almost every night of the week. Well, maybe not so much now that summer is here, but its still a blast! You should make it to the Thursday night tourney. They have a killer break and run drawing and its a fun little tourney.

Just to be fair, I didn't remember the school shooting but IMMEDIATELY thought you were talking about a shooting in a pool room when I read the title. And, that's pool related - so I would assume it would be in the pool forum section.

I don't think you did it intentionally though - but I am saying it crossed my mind also, and therefore I got nervous about what the contents were of this thread b/c of our pool playing friends.

WOW, relax a little Gramps. Not only am I a grad of NIU but I still live about 25 miles east of the school. Didn't even think about the shooting from 2 or 3 years ago until you mentioned it. I see "shooting" in a pool forum, and it only means one thing to me,,, pool shooting. I saw NIU and Shooting, and I'm thinking hey there might be a tourney not too far from me, I best take a look !!

Geez, lighten up. I guess nobody can mention "shooting in Chicago" ever again, because they had a dozen shootings over the weekend, and close to a 1000 shootings/murders last year. I'm not sure how one incident at a college is so much more tragic than the shootings of elementary kids everyday in Chicago?? It was a freak thing at NIU, it's a common occurrence in Chicago everyday. Plus, this is an international site and I"m sure many didn't remember the shooting. Is there a time limit. I can't believe for a second his intention was to stir anything up.

Ok, back to the topic !!

Or you could drive to Pyramid Club in Addison. They have 18 Gold Crowns with Simonis Cloth, and kept in tip top shape. Plus, they have a full restaurant and full bar. Probably just over an hour drive for you.
Food is great...

They have some good leagues as well. Thursday has 18 teams for an in-house ACS league. Lot of good players !! Most teams have at least one master or at least a player who should be a master but has avoided detection somehow !! You wanna play? I'll get you on a team !!!

PS: I play there, but I don't run the league or own the restaurant. Just a nice play to shoot.
 
Try Bass Fishin!

To hell with pool get a jon boat and an electric motor and head over to Lake Shabonna! I fished there many times great little bass lake nice and small just a terrific place to hang out! Boy I cannot tell you how much I liked that little lake. But if you get up to the Pyramid Club tuesday nights are free pool and Sunday is $5.00 all day. The Monday night league supposedly has the better players but Thursday is the most fun and also has some excellent players.

hello

i live in dekalb area and we go to main st billiards its about a 45 min drive but real good action up there every tuesday 9 ball tourny to starts at 8 hope that helps
