Should regional tours be Open or Handicapped ?

It seems like many regional tours whent to Amateur or Handicapped. What do they do in your area? Would you rather play in open style events, amateur player only events or open handicapped events?

Couldnt agree more... If its a tour than you should be good enough to play even with everybody. If not than do what a lot of guys have done through out their careers... Get you A$# handed to you

There isn't any perfect handicapped system that I've encountered. Either a top player outruns his handicap or a guy who is better than his handicap indicates wins the event.

ALL TOURNAMENTS SHOULD BE PLAYED EVEN !

No matter who you let in or who it is for they should pay the same and play the same.

If you want to match up with somebody and give him a spot fine. But a tournament is a tournament. Otherwise it is a side show ! Total crap imho.

Zilla don't play handicap's. Zilla didn't learn that way. Oldschool baby !

I completely agree that open tournaments should be played even but I think the entry fee should not be even in regional tours. There are some parts of the country that pool is not as big as some other areas so it is hard to get a decent turnout. If a new tour starts you usually get a huge field in the first season but after that the lower handicaps finally realize they have no chance in cashing and stop playing. So you get less and less players and eventually the tour just becomes the same 20 guys playing and the same 5 guys winning. The players that have no chance in cashing are the ones that make the payout bigger. In some tours you get a field of 64 players and only 15 might have a chance of cashing. Those 49 other players are making the payouts what they are.

With the handicap entry fee I feel like all the players benefit. The strong players end up getting better payouts and the lower handicaps get a better chance of cashing, learn something, and hopefully keep supporting pool and the tour.

I know you are "old school" so you might not be open to this idea and I understand that, but pool is dying so maybe it is time for something new.

I agree. In my area we have both open tournaments and handicap tournaments. When I go to an open event, I mostly go to learn something and try to play my best because it would be hard for me to beat pros consistently and win. For handicap tournaments, I always have a good chance of cashing. I like the variety.

God no. Regional tours should be step towards the bigger pro tournaments.

I can't stand all this handicapped b.s., what happened to paying your dues?

The Desert Classic Tour here in Arizona doesn't Handicap the Tournament, but they do Handicap the Entry Fee.

A Players pay $70
B Players pay $50
C Players pay $35

And they also have sidepots (Calcutta's are illegal here) and they have a Sidepot for B & Below players.

The Answer is easy! For Good Players or players looking to get better, playing even in the only way to go. BUT, for Bars/Rooms that want to make money they need to get more people in the room. Handicapping is the way to go for them. Having a Variety is a win/win for everyone.

So are you saying everyone should PAY even or PLAY even or both?

Play even. Staggered entry fees are a reasonable compromise imo. If a B player is going to play an Open player in the first round it's tough to expect him to pay an $80 entry fee.

Does anyone remember what happened to the Empire State Tour? If you do, why did they go to handicapped events and was it good or bad for pool in that area?
