Should the Director(s) Have Stopped the 2018 Mosconi Cup?

Just spent most of my Sunday watching last years Mosconi Cup on YouTube.

It was epic.

But, how many times does the referee need to ask the crowd to quit down while the players are shooting?? 200, 300?

They should've halted play until the crowd complied, IMO.

Not that I don't enjoy the passion. But, if that's how it's going to be, they should allow the same thing in Vegas.

I was at the 2016 Ryder Cup and the atmosphere was surreal. it was an absolute fracas. The most fun I've had with my clothes on. But even then, the crowd was quiet during tee offs and putts.

With all the grandstanding, races to five and pockets bigger than a pickle barrel, the MC just needs to go away entirely, IMHO.

You must be fun at a party. ;) Dude, its a made-4-tv "exhibition" and in that context it is perfect. Sell-out crowds and a lot of interest. Kinda reminds me of golf's "Skins Game", not "real" golf but entertaining. Hell, let's bring back Irving Crane and Jimmy Caras and really put people to sleep. Yeah, that's what pool needs, morticians with cues.

I have to respectfully disagree. It might be the single best promotional the sport has going. Just my .02.

HA! You're a maniac! The mosconi cup is badass man i love watching it. Mad pressure and chip buttys and screaming. And pool is tough enough that we can use 5" pockets in hand racked, high pressure situations and it's still touchy.

Totally agree. I think the World 14.1 is the time/place for old-school, quiet, serious pool. The Mosconi Cup is all about entertainment. Watching guys dog-it in front of a big crowd is pretty fun to watch.

Being originally from WI, I'm VERY surprised your ''acting out''....when a drinking crowd gets rambunctious. WI and MN drink as much as those Europeans. Maybe we should be quiet at a baseball game :).

Mosconi Cup is the best thing going in professional pool.

Watching any other match is like watching paint dry , or worse, golf.

How’d the Filipinos get so good playing in such a rowdy and distracting environment. This isn’t golf, I love that Mosconi cup environment!! It makes it intense. Save the funeral home environment for something else.

Oh yeah. It's got to be insane playing there, with the whispered "SHHH" from however many people as loud as a scream all just waiting to see you scratch on the break or dog a 9 or whatever so they can erupt in cheers and whistles. Brutal, but nice entertainment once a year.

I wish every pool tournament was 9 ball, race to 5, bucket pockets, and screaming packed stadium! We will have finally arrived.

HA! lol In a perfect world Vegas will be just as loud or louder!

To elaborate, that incessant "chirping" during players shots was poor form. It looked bad. Disrespectful of the players and the game. Especially when the referee is asking for quiet 100's of times; during every shot.

Yeah, but it's a show. Like Wrestle-mania compared to Collegiate wrestling.

Since your new to this forum....keep in mind.

If it wasn't for the success of the Cup, Luke Riches may of NEVER purchased the US Open 9 ball rights that were created by Barry Behrman over 40 years ago.

THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME FOR A MAJOR USA EVENT TO NOT BE RUN BY POOL PLAYERS OR PROMOTERS WITH NO DEEP POCKETS $$$$$$$$$ OR BY POOL ROOM OWNERS THAT REALIZE, IT'S OFTEN A LOSS. IF YOU WANT TO SEE GREAT PLAY, I'LL SEE YAH AT THE OPEN THIS YEAR.

The VA US Open 9-ball venue that ran for 42 years, changed many lives for the better and created HOF members (hall of fame).

The 2019 US Open at Mandalay Bay (inked for 7 years guaranteed) may be a turning point in time for the game/sport Worldwide. That's how I perceive this situation.

I think it would be nice if somehow Michaela could come back. She had amazing control.

In the meantime, the prize fund at the MC has been raised by 50% for next year. You may want to ask some of the players how they felt about the noise and whether they thought it was unfair.

You guys should’ve seen some of the good action rooms back in the day.
...at the Rack, just because somebody was playing for ten Gs, it didn’t stop 30 others
from trying to make games....with all the histronics that involves.

Fatty told a guy once that wanted some decorum...”Go play in a wax museum.”
...as a matter of fact, Fatty would be my ideal Mosconi captain.

I never asked for respect in action...I just demanded that people stay a backstroke away...
...you’re all alone over the cue, if you can’t achieve that mind set by yourself....
...no set of conditions will help you.

Regardless how the players feel about it, or whether is effects their game, I still contend that it looks bad. Gives the fans the appearance of having complete lack of regard. Which, let's be honest, they did.

As awesome as Day 4 was, it was a s**tshow between the audience and referee. Credit to the Refs for maintaining their composure.

I propose the referee either stop asking for quiet, or be more authoritative.

Just my .02 cents.

I agree with the down on the shot quietness, but at all other times, let em go wild.

Vegas won't be nearly as loud. The American fans just don't act as boisterous and there won't be as many Europeans in the crowd.

GREAT POINT BOB

One thing I've seen/realized in pool, and many sports over the years is this. Strong women can easily tell a man to sit down and shut up....if they don't they look like a fool.

When a man does it to another man, the moment is Entirely different.

FEW men enjoy arguing with a woman if they are right.

Evelyn Dysart/Midwest tour.... is a perfect example.

When your in a room with mostly men, and you have a woman in charge and reffing, the amount of poor sportsmanship and ''acting out'' moments are nearly zilch.

I'm sorry guys, but if y'all think drunken rowdiness is exciting and a boon for modern pool, then we should all hope that this trend continues to spill over into all tournaments and league play....right???

Am I missing something here? I simply cannot imagine Earl Strickland, or Jayson Shaw, or Mike Dechaine, etc. studying the table for their next shot with a crowd of drunks in the seats whooping and hollering, hoping that they miss their next shot? Would this be good for pool and its already tarnished image?

That said, I fully understand that the MC is an event for entertainment/television ratings. Admit it or not, but it is a bastardized version of what real pool tournaments are all over the rest of the world. It's like comparing televised wrestling from the 70's with collegiate wrestling....same sport except one's a joke and the other is dead serious.

I'd rather be entertained by true "professionalism".....a sport that is played the way it was intended to be played.

JMHO.

And one the participants(WWE) make a ton of money and the other they dont make s#!%..

I'm glad to see so many people "get" what MC is and it seems like only 2 that are clueless.

Here you have an event that is SOLD OUT as in people actually paid to watch, and you've got 2 guys complaining.

I would imagine it's one of if not the most watched pool event of the year and you've got a couple people that want to ruin that - you really cant make this stuff up.
