Should tournaments ban the use of ivory cues?

I love ivory. I own a fancy Ebony/Ivory Mike Bender cue. It has ivory ferrules, ivory joint, ivory ringwork, ivory points w/ scrimshaw. A most beautiful cue and a precision tool as well. They will need to "pry it from my cold dead hands".

Whatever floats your boat. China loves you more.

What if the guy got his entry money by selling drugs or hustling some poor guy out of it pretending he can't play? Can we ban him from entry then? Ask how they got the money to enter?

I don't know if that is ethical. However, getting your money from car washes is a totally different matter.

If I told the TD I had ivory substitute in my cue he'd never be able to tell different. Besides, TDs work for tournament promoters and the last thing any promoter or room owner needs is to piss off a sizable group of players who do have ivory in their cues.

And the LAST thing a bunch of pool players wanting around a pool room is undercover agents who witness and observe things that may have nothing to do with ivory. They may even catch some pool players illegal racking.

The gambling is illegal though.

If agents came to my local room and see the ring games? Money being thrown around.

Gambling was always illegal in a pool room when I grew up and in most of the places I've played. I can't count the number of times being scolded for flashing money.

Same here.

The employees don't care we flash money but they do at other places. I have to apologize and tell them it's a bad habit of mine.

Lets face it this is a politically correct world and should tournaments ban the use of what is now an illegal item/material?

I can see players protesting to directors because they don't want to be play another player using an illegal cue.

If a player is using an illegal item, deemed by the laws of some states, than how can we trust him not to cheat?

I really don't care but since this is a hot topic would it be just better to disallow an item the government now deem illegal.

No, but they should ban the use of cues with tips of leather. A cow died for your tip.

Also, no players wearing leather shoes, wool shirts...

Yeah right and I'll bet you're going to ry and tell me bacon comes from some animal and I know good and well it comes from a store all wrapped in a package. I've never seen any wild bacon out running around.

The plastics used are mostly made from petrochemicals. Can't abide by that either.

Most of the medicines we take require solvents, reagents, etc in their preparation that are also petrochemicals. So, can't abide by that.

We all know about the oil shortage an how drilling and spills harm the environment.

Can't use plastics and can't take medications either.

For that matter, you are all exhaling carbon dioxide. Can't allow breathing at pool tournaments. On second thought...you can inhale...you just shouldn't exhale....

I can't see any benefit of such a rule, unless it would stop cue makers from putting Ivory in new cues. I don't believe that is a problem considering the existing laws on ivory use. Why stir it up?

We must think about sponsors. They will be all over this ban and push their cues.

I don't think there is any law out there that makes ivory in a cue illegal per se. It may be illegal to import, or export, or in some cases to buy or sell, but I don't think anyone who has an existing legal ivory cue is breaking any laws.

That said, I own no cues with ivory and I won't buy any.

We're certainly going down that path.

I say ban everyone that wears green shorts, flip flops, leather shoes, tank tops, shirts with collars, if they have gray hair (that wold involve banning me as I have plenty of it, so much so that there is little brown left), red heads, people that play with a cue longer than 57 inches, cues that don't have rubber bumpers on the bottom, cues that are made out of wood (only graphite cues allowed). You get the idea.:boring2::boring2::boring2:

no, but they should ban ivory balls.

Turn your head and cough when the TD reaches down to check.
