Apologies to all, but KM's mailbox is full:

I owe KM a big thank you. The description of 8 ball as chess fundamentally changed how I approach the game. Particularly the part about each ball serving a particular role, like chess pieces.

I won a challenging match last night because I approached each shot, thinking, "what does this shot do to improve my position and hinder my opponent?"

Outstanding advice!

kerry is an excellent player! even got the chance to meet up with him when i lived in mass, showed me a handful of real nice places to play, my favorite was mazins'...quiet like a church, wonderful place....great guy too!

come down sometime Kerry! we have some of the best pool on earth here twice a year.....and the best food 365 especially when your rolling with the ghost.

stay cool,

A worthy shout out. I'm sure it will make him very happy to know. It's hard to give advice in pool that will really click and it's great when someone can communicate an idea in a way that speaks to you and that you can grow from. I wish I and others were more consistently capable of that.

Good point, but I wish others were more capable of LISTENING to the advice..

Excellent advice. I played Kerry once at the SBE and it was a fun and competitive match. Good guy.

Wow! I'm very happy to hear this! 8 ball is my favorite game...I really enjoy the strategy and moving, as well as the precise cueball control needed when its time to run out. I'm very happy to hear that my description helped you! Thanks a lot for posting this.

Let me know if there is anything else you need!

Dardusm,

Hello! I'm sorry I don't know you by your screen name. Mind sharing your real name? Although sorry to say there is a very high chance I don't remember that either lol. Sorry I wish I could remember the names of the people I play...my weak spot!

What year was it? How did the match go? I tend to do badly in that tournament for some reason. This past year I was as sick as I've been in 20 years. What a battle against my health lol.

Anyway thanks for sharing!

yes, excellent advice for how to think through the variables of every shot.....

just dont pick up two of your balls and switch their places by hand, that is called "castling" and is only allowed in chess ;)

Not sure that castling one solid or stripe for another would help anyway. Heh heh.

Kerry,

Another huge 8 ball win last night vs a strong opponent. Your advice continues to be golden! 3-0 since you offered the chess analogy!

They are indeed exceptional posts that concisely explain some strategy principles and thought processes that are all too often missing from people's games, even many who fancy themselves as being good 8 ball players.

I have 8 ball State Finals in 2 states this weekend! I hope I can employ my own advice lol!

Thanks again,

Awesome! Glad to hear it. I must admit though that I don't know that I wrote anything about chess specifically? I know for sure that I have *thought* of the idea of just blindly capturing whatever piece is available, and that this isn't really very good strategy for chess. I just don't remember actually *writing* it lol.

In any case, I'm very happy to hear that this advice is helping you. 8 ball is a great game!

I extrapolated from your "every ball has a role (roll, ha ha) to play" idea.
