Showman vs Wayne

Showman for me because i love old school. The more artistic a cue is the less i like it. But who the heck am i just an old guy that thinks that a pool cue is to play great pool with and i like simple and clean look like the Scruggs that i have been playing with since the stone age. Maybe Rolling Stones. lol

Of all the people who seem to think Showman is 'the obvious choice' or 'hands down' winner, how many come to that decision because they think Thomas Wayne is an arrogant, condescending a$$? Or because they've heard his cues don't play well?

Almost 18 or 19 years ago Thomas challenged me to go hit some balls with his personal stainless jointed playing cue at the BCA show. He wanted to prove to me he could make a softer feeling stainless jointed cue. It was one of the best hitting cues I have shot with.
I have not shot with a Showman, so I can't comment on it one way or the other, but have heard all kinds of good things about him and his cues. I do know both get top dollar for their work, so they must be doing something right.
It is a toss of coin which would bring a better return on your investment. Thomas does build some higher dollar cues than John, so if you are just going to give me one of their cues I would hope to be given one of Thomas celtic cues. We built a pretty nice celtic design cue, but his work is many notches above anything we did.

I wish Thomas could back away from some of this bullshit since it doesn’t help him at all. He is without a doubt the most respected cue maker in the business, and that comes from the most elite makers. I’ve heard it. Neither TW nor Showman needed to get into this mess and it may be that the discussion on another forum may have just fell apart to the degree that pride got hurt. I don’t know. IMO, TW caters to the collector more than to players. You can’t compare Showman to Wayne. Getting back to the original question of what maker and cue I’d want if I had the opportunity, that is easy. Here it is.
I can't speak to that really except to say, its not the first time they've butted heads. Apparently John and Thomas are two people with VERY different opinions. What you see in that other thread isn't their first dance. As to why they seem to hate each other... no idea.
I'm much more shallow. I don't give a sh!t if the guy building the cue is a douche. Just as long as he isn't a douche TO ME. lol I'd buy the cue based on the guy's skill, ability, designs, etc.. But I totally respect your opinion. Many people feel the same as you. I just have less of a moral compass.
I suspect he is too smart and too blunt for many to understand. It is very tough for some to tolerate fools and there are many fools in this world (and no, I am not refering to any specific person).

I would love to see John smack the shit out of him....he deserves it.
I will say this about TW: it's not often that such immense, bloated ego is backed up by a man's work. TW operates at the forefront of cuemaking design and execution; one can say that he's been defining the boundary and stepping beyond it for a couple of decades now.
I am more annoyed by cuemaker ego when they're obviously middle of the pack (or worse). TW might come across as an arrogant *****, but his cuemaking repertoire is unrivaled. If you disagree (note that is not the same as saying "I don't care about artistic cues"), name one.

I could overlook the bloated ego if his cues were mentioned when talking about the best playing cues ever. I don't hear that.

I wonder about this. I've hit with several Thomas Wayne cues, and although they weren't for me, a lot of cues out there are not for me. Of all the things in his repertoire, I would think that making a cue hit well for whatever reason and for whomever is well within his skill set.
Let me clarify, the Thomas Wayne cues I've shot with (from plain 6-pointers to completely loaded ivory inlays), I can guarantee that someone out there likes the way they hit.
I'm not defending Thomas in any way. I'm just wondering about the overall comments hinting on his cues playability. Balls go in the hole.
When talking about "the best hitting cues," seems like every cue maker gets mentioned.

Maybe when you are around pool a little longer you know that isnt the case.
There are lots of cuemakers that can't make a good hitting cue.

im the kinda guy that will own a great playing 40 year old gold crown that leaves aluminum stains on your pants after an hr of play, rather than buy a new furniture piece table that has fancy artistic metal rails with designer color bed cloth, but plays like crap. Im also the kind of guy that would rather eat a restaurant that has little in the way of atmosphere and decor but serves up awesome food.

Not that it will probably matter to you, but I was specifically referring to Richard Black, Bob Manzino, Rick Chudy, Ernie Gutierrez, and Jerry McWorter. I might say that they all put themselves on that same short list. Haven't had the pleasure to ever talk with Showman but perhaps he has TW on his short list too
If they can't make a good hitting cue, then they aren't a cue maker. They would be a wannabe. Right?
