Sighting (not aiming) thread

Your son's geometry teacher apparently doesn't understand how the systems work!

But I bet the geometry teacher would be willing to admit that she doesn't understand the system, not just preach that it couldn't possibly work.

Agreed. To know if the system could work or not (in theory, based on geometry), she would need to know a lot more about the implementation details of the system (i.e., she would need a detailed written procedure that could be interpreted clearly and followed consistently).

We learned to use these cues to help us see the OB-to-pocket line and find the contact point/cut angle without all the walking around (the usual reason for innovation). But we learned them subliminally, so we don't notice that we're using them and don't know what's wrong when they're gone.

I agree, and this is exactly why it doesn't matter if fractional aimers cover the pockets with sheets or whatever - those antics don't prove anything except that they're humans with pool experience and normally functioning brains. Experienced players know where the pockets are if they can see enough of the table because the brain fills in the 3D structure based on visual cues. I think there are some orientations that cause perceptual illusions that lead to exclamations like "I always overcut/undercut that shot", but I haven't seen a good model for consistently predicting how it affects different people. The optical illusion researchers seem to understand these problems pretty well, so maybe we can get one hooked on pool to help figure it out.

I agree with that too.

covering the pocket is eaaaasy. what about covering the pocket AND the ob? can u guys still make the ball? honestly. once i see the ctel...block whatever... the ball is in as long as the cb is visible....so i know where to stop the pivot.

can u guys do that? just curious.

I don't think you can if you "pivot" after the OB is hidden.

Wow! You can make the ball with the magic cloak over both the pocket and the ball? I bet that really impresses the girls.

Now, can you put that magic cloak over my knee and make my knee as good as it used to be? If you can, then I'll be a CTE devotee for life.

Thanks,
Dave

Wow, you've talked to ron v. hal and stan and still have no clue. I think your unteachable.

Once your body is set to the CTEL (I have to see the OB long enough to know where the ctel is). Once I'm set, the OB no longer matters.

Would love to show you in person someday.

Lots of people can close their eyes to shoot - they don't even have to see the CB once they're "set".

Would love to show you in person someday.

I'd be glad to give you the chance if we're ever in the same place, but don't get your hopes up about convincing me. In person I might be more polite, but not less discriminating. I already know we disagree about what constitutes evidence (much less proof), so it's probably destined to be a non-event.

Once they have they alignment/aim set, I bet they could make the shot even with a sheet covering the pocket, the OB, the CB, the entire length of the cue ... still with their eyes closed. This would really impress the chicks ... don't you think?

On second thought, if your eyes are closed, I guess the sheet is imMATERIAL. Man, this aiming system stuff sure is confusing.
