Single best tip, book or drill

I think that the best tip of advice for improving is to have a sound pre-shot routine. That includes sound fundamentals of stance, grip, bridge and most importantly visualizing the shot and cueball destination before you start. The two best drills I have used when time is short are: straight in stop shots, while working on the pre-shot routine on each shot; and the no rails drill....spread all fifteen balls out, no nearer than 8 inches from the rail, and pocket all balls without touching the rail with the cueball or object balls.

NEVER SACRIFICE ACCURACY FOR POWER... I learned that in a book called Lessons In 9 Ball...

;)

very true. there was a really cool advert for Pirelli tyres a few years back and the tag line has always stuck with me. i always say it to myself after i've launched the cue ball of the table on my break. :D

I did say one thing that I felt helped a certain area of my game...

OK: nine ball helped my one pocket game. I had trouble running out in one pocket so I started practicing running out while playing nine ball and as I increased my ability to run balls in nine ball, I was able to run far more balls in one pocket. :(

That wasn't very good. Ok, here's a bit more......Going to a smaller diameter standard maple shaft has helped me to reduce the number of times I miss when applying side spin. Apparently, I am getting less cue ball squirt occuring with the smaller diameter shafts.

For 9 Ball get Bob Hennings Pro Book Series and DVD. If you get a year subscription to Inside Pool you get his first DVD as a bonus.

Best tip I can give anyone is, ONE WORD, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
As many hours a day as you can. If you have an hour lunch and are close to a table, practice. On your way home practice. All day Saturday and Sunday, if you have weekends off, Practice. The longer the session the better.
Only way you can understand what everything is trying to teach you is to know something about the subject first. Anyway, hope you improve your game. Later.

I have to disagree with you.

This product bl*ws, I've seen it and I don't want to watch someone try the same shot 2 and 3 times and then tell me "Well you get the idea"

Either he should have practiced....or hired an editor to cut out all the missed shots.

I can miss shots too

Here's something I heard from Mark Wilson that has helped me a lot. When facing a tough shot, he suggests that you think this way:

"I might miss this ball, but I REFUSE to miss because I delivered an improper stroke. I will give this shot the best excecution that I can, and if it doesn't work, I will know that I did my best."

This really helps calm me down in pressure situations.

Every book or dvd that you get will at least have one thing that you can take away from it. Check out a thread on here about Hal Houle's aiming system, it's simple and very effective. There are a lot of good drills out there...most of which you can find somewhere on the internet. Search yahoo or google for them...you'll find them.

I have a drill that I put into pdf form if you want to check it out, pm me your e-mail address. It helps with two things...cue ball control and position play.

Agree with the concept and Mark is a friend of mine and would suggest you try to eliminate any negative words from your self talk. When in a tough situation eliminate i might miss with self talk something like

I make this shot 2 out of ten times and this is going to be one of the two. Now set up solid and put a good stroke on it.

I am currently working on some learning material that deals specifically with "the inner coach" - that little voice inside our heads that tells we can or can't - sometimes he shows up to help, sometimes to destroy - I should have the drafts completed in the next few weeks, I'll let you know when its done and I'll send you the draft for you to check it out.
