SJM at the 2024 Mosconi Cup

I actually liked the team matches and was disappointed there wasn't one on day 4.

It makes it feel like what it is, a team event.

Also, this way we get to see every player every day.

JMHO
Because of B&Rs by the opponent, there's no guarantee of seeing everyone play in the Team matches. Neither Alcaide nor Styer hit a ball in the Team match on Day 1, and Alcaide was just a spectator again for Day 3's Team match. I guess you could say they "played" by sitting in the player's seat for those games, but they never went to the table.

B&Rs happen, they each had at least a game

After nine days of sweating the International in St Augustine, I drove to Orlando for the Mosconi, hoping that I had four more days of endurance in me, knowing I’d be in a shambles after thirteen days of sweating pool.

I will omit the Mosconi Cup match details as they have been covered in other Mosconi Cup threads. I will focus on the ebbs and flows of the play and on what it was like to attend the event.
Thanks for another great review. Wondering what your overall opinion is between Orlando and Vegas? Which did you prefer when considering the venue, surrounding area, etc?

The Mosconi is modeled on the Ryder Cup, and the final day of the Ryder Cup is always singles matches alone. The need for the day one full-team match in the Mosconi was to introduce the players, some of whom, unlike in golf, are not household names. To be frank, I'd be OK with it if they eliminate the day one team match.

You get to see every player every day anyway. Yes, I know there have been a handful of exceptions over the years, but they are rare.

Emily said Shaw asked her to get the refs to quiet the crowd down a bit before shots, but Frazier told him that the crowds in London did the same thing to the American players. She told Shaw he just never noticed it until he got some of it back in spades from the American fans. Shaw apparently nodded to her in acknowledgment, at least according to her.
This is not accurate. I have attended all but one of the Mosconi Cup events at Alexandra Palace. European fans at Alexandra Palace do not make a habit of sharking American players once they are over the shot.

American and European fans alike are, of course, very rowdy until the player gets down over the shot, but that's fair game at the Mosconi.

This was a screw up, but as I noted, things improved on Day 3, so there's evidence that fans began to understand the boundaries of propriety.

Comparing the 2022 Mosconi at Bally's Las Vegas to the 2024 edition at the Caribe Royale in Orlando is a close call. Both were good hotels with solid facilities, and both arenas were set up well.

For me, I'd rather be in Vegas. Matches are always synchronized with British prime time, so in Vegas the matches started at about 10:30 AM if memory serves. Your "pool day" was always over by 5:00 PM, and you had a full evening to socialize every day in a city with a million different things to do.

That said, Orlando must be counted as a success, and I'd be happy to return to the Caribe Royale, a fine hotel.

I rather see them do true scotch doubles on the full team events. That would be interesting'er (for us hillbilly southerner country music fans)

I disagree. I felt FSR was Team Europe's best player by a lot.
I garbled my post. I meant to say that FSR "was clearly the best player on Team Euro." Virtually flawless, as I said.

Shaw had that big miss on the 8 and a few other mistakes.

A big exception is when the event ends with just a few matches on the last day. This year, 5 of the 10 players did not play in a match on Day 4.

Just relaying what she said. I don't recall London fans doing that last year, either.

Cheering and having a good time is all fine and well, it's an automatic.
You don't breathe loudly when a player is on a shot, before, during, or after. Run your mouth and
expect what you may receive in return. For $ 5.00 I've seen sharking turn into a brawl.
And what about cymbals?

And what about cymbals?
I play guitar, cymbals are a must just add a drum kit. A live band is fine with me, invite an orchestra if you want. Just be quiet when a player is on the shot, then give it a 1234 Enter Sandman.
Hope that answers your question.

This is the first Mosconi Cup I have attended and enjoyed it greatly. I, like others, was extremely disappointed in the sharking by the American fans. Although it did not seem to bother the players, it’s still bad manners.

No one seems to remember that rant Styer made after grabbing the mic away from the lady interviewing him after he won his match. He told the crowd they were only yelling at 60% and he wanted them to rev it up to 100%. He wanted them to get louder when Team Europe makes a mistake, a foul, a scratch, a missed ball or bad position. During his tirade he used profanity to make his point. It was a call for bad sportsmanship and they got the message loud and clear. Go ahead, shark our opponents any way you can. It was a very bad look for Tyler and way out of character for him. I was kind of shocked watching this. It just had no place here!

Meanwhile the Euro players were pretty much all complimentary of the efforts made by their opponents, the U.S. Team. I didn't hear any such nastiness from them.

Other than the swear, I didn't think Tyler was out of line. At least that is how it looked to me on TV. He wasn't trying to encourage sharking or being nasty, imo, he was just trying to get the fans to up the pressure.

The ones who sharked either haven't watched much pro pool, I'd guess, or had too much to drink. I suspect the crowd will be loud, but better behaved, at the next Mosconi in Florida. (I don't think it is going back to Vegas, Frazer loved the Orlando crowd).

Disagree that there was a lack of dining options: there's the outdoor bar, a 2-story sports bar, a steakhouse, a rum bar that all served food. Also a breakfast venue and a Starbucks on the premises. It's not cheap to eat there but that's pretty standard for a resort of this caliber. In addition there are several dining options within 2 miles of the venue.
Seems I did not avail myself of all the dining options, so If I'm lucky enough to attend in 2026, I'll try to do better.

Your interpretation of his impromptu speech was a little different than mine. I heard him directly call out to U.S.fans to cheer loudly for any and all Euro errors. That's blatant bad sportsmanship in my book! After that kind of encouragement where do you draw the line.
