SJM at the World Straight Pool Championships

Starting this thread to share my experiences this week. I suspect that for the first few days, I won't be able to provide that much in the way of match coverage, but later in the week, I'll try to share much of what I see.

Well, here am I, mingled amongst these confirmed worldbeaters. Even breakfast this morning served as a reminder of just how dangerous this field is, as I said good morning and good luck to each of Hohmann, Immonen, Eberle, and Orcullo, in the cafe, and said the same to Engert and Schmidt when, moments after breakfast, our paths crossed by the elevators.

I must admit to being overwhelmed a bit by the occasion. It's four years since I last competed, and even then, I never competed at this level. Still, my excitement and joy of being here far outweigh my apprehensions of being badly overmatched. I feel certain I'll be focused when I play, and that's all I can really hope for.

I wonder what it will feel like to compete against players at this level. I grew up practicing with and hanging around top players, but never competed aginst them. In fact, one of the guys I played over 30 years ago at the Golden Q, name Tom Walter, is in the field, and I'm exicted to see him here.

It definitely helps that I count so many of the players as good friends, but I'm dying to see how I handle my first three matches, all of them in the evening session today.

This is soooooooooo cool. I can't wait to get out there and try my luck on the glorious green felt.

I'll be there later to cheer you on, my friend! I am so excited for you... I can't tell you how much I'll be rooting for you!

Go get 'em, SJM!!

Best of luck to you. May you play your best and get the rolls all week. Johnnyt

Thank you for the upcoming updates.

Everyone got 1/2 hour of practice on the tourney tables lat night.

I warmed up with a delightful fellow and rock solid player name Matt Tetrault. I started off very slowly, but Matt's encouragement helped me a lot and by the end of our practice, I was playing much better. You really have to maintain your focus on these Diamond tables, unless, of course, you fancy a trip back to the chair.

I noticed Feijen getting onto the pactice table with VanDenBerg, thinking that either one might use up the entire half hour on a single inning, and wondering why they'd chosen each other to practice. What followed was actually pretty cool, as they played scotch-doubles together to ensure that each got to hit plenty of balls. A pretty creative solution in my view, and I don't think many would like to gamble at 14.1 with that tandem.

Also noticed John Schmidt and Bobby Hunter practicing together, thinking that sure was a lot of talent to have on one table.

One thing noteworthy happened at the player's meeting. By player vote, it was decided that after a third consecutive foul, the incoming player would have an option to accept the resulting position or request the traditional re-rack with opening break by the player having committed the third foul.

SJM Is SOooooo Cool!

HI SJM,

I so enjoy reading your commentaries at these event. You've earned your spot at this event so go out there and show them how you earned it! (Given your rollin with the big dawgs now, you'll have the benefit of NOT needing to play at 5AM  ) You're going to do great!!!

Hopefully I can make it out there one of the nights! Good Luck and Shoot Straight! :D

Yowser! Just learned that NYC's own Mike Yednak has beaten Danny Harriman. I didn't see any of it and can't relate the score, but wanted to pass on this news. Way to go, Mike.

Good Luck

Good luck to you sjm. Will be anticipating your next update.

Sjm.. you are living the life my man!!
Play the table hang a few 100+ runs on'em.. that'll show 'em who's who
good luck bro!!

Stu,

May the best rolls come your way. Stay loose and focused and you will do well, I am sure.

Peace, JBK

I am clueless as to what SJM's real name is so I can check his standing

I think it's Stu something.

One thing for sure, there is only one pool player I would love to see SJM demolish on a field of green this week, who shall remain nameless at this juncture.

Hopefully, SJM will have a blast competing in a professional 14.1 event, and we AzBilliards readers get to benefit from his experience by reading his always-well-written posts! :)
