SJM's Slant on the CSI 8-ball Scandal

Vincent,

In that case, two world class Taiwanese players were entered in an amateur event. They destroyed the field and were disqualified. CSI eased their pain with a $5000 payout to cover their expenses from and to Taiwan. The team they played on also won the Advanced Team 8 ball event for an addtional $4000. Not bad for being disqualified!

Lyn

That's why I said there was wrong on both sides. When I read the thread awhile ago, there were numerous mentions of other countries getting away with it, putting world class (but unknown) players in the open division. Too lazy to dig up the information now.

... Chang Jung Lin came to the US Open 9 ball two years ago and quietly placed 5th. I believe that was his first time coming to the US, and probably one of the first few times he ever touched a Diamond table. Ko, I believe was there too. There was a streamed match of him that year earlier in the tournament when David Alcaide played perfect pool and beat him. ...

Yes, that was the purple-streaked-hair Ko. He and Alcaide played on the stream on Tuesday (I looked it up). Alcaide didn't play perfect pool, but he played better than Ko did. Alcaide -- 4 missed shots, 2 fouls, 6 wet breaks (incl. 3 B&R), and 5 dry breaks. Ko -- 6 missed shots, 3 fouls, 3 wet breaks (incl. 2 B&R), and 4 dry breaks.

My memories always get clouded when my fellow countrymen loses. It always seems like their opponent played perfect :grin-square:. It seems that he played much better during both his Vegas trips in these past two years. Maybe better food and more mandarin speaking fans has something to do with it.

Damn, with all of the people on this forum that have givin their strong opinions of the situation, mostly negative, I assume they were all watching the stream. CSI must've done record ppv sales!

Maybe ,, one things for sure they certainly have ruffled some feathers now and in the past so I'm sure their numbers could be more

Just because people are making comments and they are based little on facts that they honestly know nothing about.....

I was ringside when the final decision was made and it was able to overhear the final conversation to Ko's translator, who is a friend of mine. He was told that the decision was made to let SVB play and whether the Taiwanese group agree with the decision or not, it was suggested to have Ko play and be the bigger person in all of this. The translator and the person from CSI that he had the conversation with actually hugged after their talk. The translator went over and talked to Ko for literally 30 seconds, Ko gave a weak smile back to his friend and they immediately started the match.

At the start of the match, Ko had two dry breaks and SVB was up quickly 4-0. They took a break, Ko came over and Kevin Cheng said to him "two dry breaks, you will be okay" (that was translated to me by Kevin). There was no talk between the two at that point that Ko was still upset and it was effecting his play.

Good input
I would say the decision also affected Shane.
When I first saw Shane suddenly appeared on stream practising he looked a bit upset. I actually tot he was practising in one of outer tables and that he looked upset cos he did not qualify into semi.
Also Ko will not voice out his frustrations to Kevin when match has already started- it affects his rhythm further.:D

That doesn't sound like strong-arming, much less threat of financial penalty. Watchez, can you put that rumor to bed with confidence? TY for sharing.

Good story thanks. It doesn't change the fact that a bye should have been issued. :)

That's what it is a good story but it really tells us nothing because he can't say whether he wanted to play or was he told if he didn't play he would not get paid ,,

What's mind blowing here is CSI did not take a whopping 30 seconds of their time and explain what the decision was and why they made it ( because they are too busy ) ,,, it's not the a state of the unions speech ,, it doesn't take a lawyer a PR man and a speech writer all it take is someone to step up to the mike and say we are putting Shane up for this match because ,,,,,,,,,,,,
How f,,,king hard could it be ,,
What this shows is they could really care less what anyone thinks and nobody there or watching deserves a explanation ,,plain and simple ,, this has probably shocked some and to others it's been SOP

No he cannot because he knows about as much as the next guy making comments.

Decision was already made when he 'overheard' whatever he thinks he heard. The actual decision occurred in the back room. He is right about one thing, Ko and the group wanted to be the bigger person in this exchange; however it doesn't mean threats were not made. Let's just say that when this occurred, no money was paid yet for any of the events.

It was suggested, can mean a lot of things.

I suggest a bye should have been issued
and it would have put all this post tournament
cr*p to bed.

CSI can decide however they want, and they do.
People can decide if they want to support them.

Wonder what the Taiwanese fans will decide ?

I'll decide to support fairness and integrity.

sjm seems adamant that strong arming did occur.

The guy with 7 posts is making comments towards what I do and do not know.

I'll let you in on a secret - I know everything. What I choose to post is up to me.

And the SVB being effected more than Ko - I believe that to be true. Just go back and look at the lag on the match. SVB didn't get the ball past the side pocket. He was jarred but after a few routine run outs, he settled down and into the match.

And even though you analogy of Ko no voicing his frustrations has no real basis -- I can let you know that it wasn't like the other members of the Taiwanese group were huddled around talking about it either. Kevin was standing next to me, the translator down by the table. The other players in different parts of the arena area.

Mis Cue of Character

Having read most posts and finger typing (for my first time :) on my daughters I pad in Helferts back yard so to speak, the perspective that Fran Crimi gave about R.S and Billy I's perspective, plus sjm's call to Mark G summed it up.
With so many broke $$$$$$$ pro pool players....they learn to have as many barrels loaded as possible just to make ends meet, and thus eventually they like "we all" May have done Once....made a BAD decision.

I'm sure none of us would NOT of thrown the first stone at Ralph....we all have made bad choices in life....

Nice try, except Kevin was at lunch with me and we didn't get back until after the first 2 racks were over. We walked into the arena thinking that we either got the Ralf/Dennis match results wrong or it was a replay.

I don't know why you are trying to act like you know something when you clearly don't, but it's the internet that is your right. Anybody actually there already knows who I am, but please, continue to disregard everything I say because I have 7 post~

Have you joined a MLB forum to call out Bud Selig --- because in the All Star game each year which has definite meaning of home field advantage for the World Series, if a player is injured, he is replaced. They don't play the game 25 players vs 21.

Or in the Olympics, a player that qualifies on the US gymnastics team gets injured -- the Olympic committee doesn't state that the US team has to be minus one player. I think in the last Olympics the player that was the alternate won a gold medal.

Beyond that, this was a round robin tournament feeding into a single elimination event. If the player who won the round robin, for whatever reason, couldn't continue, he should be replaced. In my mind, it was good karma finally showing up in pool towards SVB cause he should have been the player to move forward in the first place.
