i highly doubt he is making his selections based on weight. We may disagree with some of his selections, but I very seriously doubt weight was even a minor factor in his decision making process.
Wasn't just his decision. MR is in on it too. Let's just say the source of that tidbit is REALLY close to this whole thing. Look, i get that its entertainment but this selection process is more than a little "funny" for lack of a better word. From SVB's on/off saga on down the line the whole thing kinda smells.

Matchroom will be desperate for a US win, they run this event to make money therefore they want the strongest US side possible (whilst respecting their own rules on qualification criteria) otherwise viewers and sponsors will eventually leave.

I have no idea what criteria MR applied in this case.

However, you might be surprised how often appearance factors in. I had a big flashy publication project once: color photos all over the place, an embossed cover, and we got the best photographer in the city. She shows up and says, "I don't take pictures of ugly people." So we had to go around and collect up all the pretty people in this organization for the photo shoots. Big shots were highly happy with the final product.

Not saying it's the same but sometimes(it is TV afterall) it does boil down to who is purdier.

oh come on. are you gonna judge all of europe by a handful of cockney hooligans? most europeans loathe the english fans, be it in football or pool.

but yes, it's not unthinkable that they after a few pints would say something referring to mcminns weight. personally i like ellerman or deuel for the last spot. ellerman is a bulldozer not unlike tony drago in his days and deuel is one of the smartest pool players alive

It's not just at the Mosconi Cup live. There has been a fair bit of asshattery on this very forum from a lot of Euro fans, who seem like they get a real kick out of rubbing in every lost rack. They don't even pretend to be "good winners". It's like they have a general beef with the U.S. as a nation, and like to really dig at any lack of success that we have in anything.

Lol. I have no words.

Matchroom is taking some undeserved heat in this thread.

Yes, in the rear view mirror, some of the final result may be hard to fathom or explain, but that's hardly the point.

In the wake of Team USAs eight year losing streak, Matchroom and Johan created a vehicle by which Americans who were committed enough could make big strides in their game before the 2018 Mosconi. It was called boot camp training, and I praised them for it immediately while so many on this very forum knocked it.

The truth is, however, that the player who, arguably, embraced the tough boot camp training program more than any other has the most to show for it. That would be Skyler Woodward, who beat champion after champion at the just completed International 9-ball Open, and he was quick to credit Johan's training as the key to his great success.

The numerous American pros who failed to take advantage of this opportunity and those who praised or pardoned them for not buying in, to some extent, undermined the program developed by Matchroom and Johan to help Team USA narrow the gap between themselves and Europe.

Still, the fact remains that the ideas and methodologies proposed were well grounded, and because so many of America's premier players opted out of boot camp, it was impossible to restrict selections to those who participated.

I'm still giving Matchroom a lot of credit here and I don't think there was anything poorly considered in their approach other than the ultimately faulty assumption that American Mosconi hopefuls, with few exceptions, would embrace the opportunity for a new, more intensive, type of training.

and he is more overweight than mcminn

As a matter of fact he is not. This year Mario lost at least 10kg of fat and his tournament results changed accordingly. He still doesnt look like a marathon runner by any means but he looks more healthy then ever, aparently Mario works out. While McMinn when in Leende looked plain obese without much muscles. Maybe he has some medical issues which causes his condition but he definitely looks like prime candidate for type 2 diabetes...:(

Yeah, I didn't want to argue with his point, but I agree with you. I am not trying to beat McMinn up in any way, but he really does not look to be in good health, and I am 100 sure it affects his game.

And he played pretty damn good in Leende!! Imagine if he were at a fighting weight!

Hear, hear! Tap, tap, tap!

Feeling a little guilty there, jason?

Not a chance!

The Americans jumped around and celebrated more than the Euros do now when they were winning and if you remember it was against players that didnt play much 9ball and Snooker players.

They deserve to celebrate and I for 1 think it's great for TV.

Do I wish the Americans would win? Yes, absolutely.
But don't get pizzed off when when they do the same thing the Americans were doing when they were playing far inferior opponents back in the day.

CORRECTION: He declined to take the financial hit of travelling to multiple training sessions and a Eurotour event that paid next to nothing to pass up on money-making opportunities at tournaments in the U.S..

Perhaps if Matchroom thought this out a little more they could have arranged the training sessions without financially impacting the players who cannot afford it. Or at least given yourself an out to be able to pick whomever, without drawing hard lines in the sand that you can't back down from. Matchroom already got a little egg on it's face by having to reverse the decision on SVB. Matchroom painted itself into this corner.

Puhlease.

An unknown player like Tyler Styler found a way to participate with his whopping $1,350 in earnings this year.

I still think Bergman is a great player, and probably a cool dude, but him not being on the team is no one's fault but his own.

I've known him since he was about 13. Has always done the weight "roller coaster". He'll eat right and walk and get in top form and then a year later he's put it all back on. He's too big right now. His diet/exercise regimen is pretty bad lately.
