Sleeping in your car, a warning

Microtel or Motel 6 would have been safer relatively inexpensive alternatives. The cost is probably tax deductible, since you were traveling on business as a professional pool player.

The accuracy & incapacitation index of a .22 derringer seem insufficient.
Hey Jay he called you a "Professional Pool Player".:rotflmao1:
This thread is a year and a half old

A couple yrs ago I parked my Big Truck in Vagas, When I returned about 36 hrs later an got in, there was someone alreay there. I held him in the sleeper till the cops came an got him out of the truck. The cops asked me to check for anything missing, Only my big knife that I keep on the back of the passenger seat was missing, He was sitting in the sleeper, with his left hand on that knife, which I found under my pi;;ow. That could have been real bad, He was 2 bricks short of a full load. They hauled him away, said I might have to appear, never heard any thing more. JIm

That is what I like about Ga.'s laws

The treat you like a hero and not a villian when you shoot a criminal!!!

Jay- Sounds like you kept your cool under pressure, and I'm glad you're okay.

Let me admit right here that I have to get into work, and haven't read the whole thread. So I apologize if I'm repeating someone else, but here it is.

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION YOU SHOULD HAVE CALLED THE POLICE RIGHT AWAY. What you experienced constituted an attempted robbery or attempted carjacking. Perhaps an attempted armed one, depending on if they were actually armed. Also a conspiracy to commit those crimes, as they were working in tandem and it obviously entailed at least some agreement before they walked up to your car.

While yes, it would be inconvenient and time consuming filling out the reports, etc, with the police, perhaps it would have led to their apprehension and prosecution. Perhaps it would save others from being victimized from these thugs.

Jay,

Sure glad your OK. I shoot, train and carry on a regular basis and although the laws regarding this type of altercation vary from state to state I had a great handgun instructor once tell me "I'd rather be judged by 12 of my peers than carried by 6 of my friends." Get a bigger gun!

I've never had a problem....and I sleep on the road every night...LOL...in every part of the country!:p

Glen

PS. Except for the "cops" beating on my door's at 3am in front of Jay's house...asking me what I'm doing...."Sleeping, what the hell to you THINK I'm doing"...LOL

Well, we were just another band out of Boston
On the road to try to make ends meet
Playin all the bars, sleepin in our cars
And we practiced right on out in the street
No, we didnt have much money
We barely made enough to survive
But when we got up on stage and got ready to play
People came alive.

Guns & Dangerous Situations

I have a Concealed Weapons License and use it only when I am going to be in an area that I know is bad. So far I have not had to use it but it does give me piece of mind when I'm carrying.

My brother doesn't have a CWL but he always carries a gun and has used it three times. About 15 years ago when he was 65-66 years old he and his wife were parked well off the road in their RV in the hills east of Modesto, Ca. As he is a bad sleeper he was awake when he saw a Pickup come into the area with the lights out and park at the other end of the Parking area. He picked up his binoculars and as it was full moonlight he could see pretty good. He saw the guy take a rifle out of the trunk and lever a shell into it. Then the guy walks into the trees and walks clear around the back of the RV. My brother woke up his wife and told her there was going to be a problem and not to be suprised at anything. He then saw the guy though the side mirror coming alongside the RV. He started banging on the side of the rig and yelling FIRE. He then banged on the door and backed up a couple of feet with the rifle pointing downward against his leg. When my brother opened the door and the guy started to raise the rifle my brother shot him in the chest with a .357. He started up the RV and drove over to the coast and then up to Oregon. He later traded the .357 off to someone else and never heard anything about the shooting. He told my wife that he never lost a minutes sleep over that.

The next time he was at a small Rest Stop in Arizona and he went to the Port-a-Toilet about midnight and there was a guy sitting by the door and when my brother was leaving the guy asked for some gas money and pulled a hunting knive when my brother told him no. My brother pulled out his gun and had the guy drop the knive in a trash container and then took the guy out to the RV. There was only his rig and the guys car, my brother yelled for his wife to give him the duct tape and he ended up taping the guys arms, his legs and his mouth and put him in his own trunk and left him there. He said he hoped the guy had to stay there until the next afternoon because it gets real hot in Arizona and he planned on being long gone by then. The next time he was fishing and a guy came by and asked for "some goddammed money" and my brother just showed him the gun and the guy left without saying anything else.

My brother is now 80 and he is still a hard man to mess with.

I will never drive when I get sleepy. I wrecked a Corvette by falling asleep when I was still a teenager. So when I get sleepy, I pull over and find a place to rest.

Last week I went down to Temecula to play in a poker tournament. It was a thousand dollar buy-in with a $250,000 guarantee. They ended up with 390 players and a $390,000 purse, 130K for first. Sweet!

I played until about Midnite and busted out about 85th. No money though. I got in my car and headed home, 90 miles away. After driving a short distance I realized I was too sleepy to drive. I pulled off the freeway in Lake Elsinore and looked for a quiet spot to rest. I drove into town and parked on the main drag next to other cars. It was about 12:30 AM. I put my seat back and fell sound asleep.

About 1:15 AM there is a loud knock on my window. I'm startled awake and see a young hispanic kid at the window. He asks me if I have a cigarette, and I tell him I don't smoke. He then asks me for $5, and I realize I have a problem. I look out the other window and see two more young kids. They must have been about 18 or 19. They immediately start trying to get in my locked doors.

My first reaction is to reach for my .22 derringer in the ashtray. It holds five shots, revolver style. The first kids head is about two feet from mine, as he plays with the door, trying to get it open. I can't miss from that close, but think better of it, and try to start the car. He is now simulating a weapon under his shirt. Why I didn't shoot him I don't know. I was afraid, and there were three of them. If they had gotten in the car (actually a Ford Bronco II), I would have been in a very bad spot.

Anyway, I got the truck started, and backed up fast. Two of the kids disappeared, but the first one hung onto my door. My little truck is cold blooded and it died. He is banging on the window hard now, trying to break it. Somehow I get the truck started again and slowly pull away with him running alongside, yelling at me and simulating something under his shirt. I got away. No harm, no foul. Just a good scare.

When I got a few blocks down the street I became very mad, and thought of going back for a moment. I ended up back on the freeway and drove on home. I told Tang and Kim about my experince but not my family. They would be too worried.

Now I know that pulling off the freeway to sleep may not be such a good idea late at night. Maybe parking in an all night gas station would be better, but there is so much light it is hard to sleep. And maybe next time, I will take my .38, so I can handle three guys. And there will probably never be a next time like that. I'm getting too old for this kind of stuff. Maybe it's time for me to retire from gambling.

Sorry gang. I just realized that this should be in non pool related section. Maybe Mike can move it over.
If you had shot one of those guys, and if you had to go to trial, I'm sure you wouldn't have a lack of character witnesses.

I was reading the thread - serious and all -
e.g., various perspectives on Jay's experience,
the death penalty, advantages of carrying a gun,
ways to stay awake, locking the thread, and more,

Hey Jay, next time outsmart the thugs and sleep in the trunk where they can't see you.

Gave me my first laugh for the day!
And I kid you not!

Thanks, I think you and Smorg are the only people who understand my brand of humor.
