Small Dia. Cue Like Oscar D

I no that Oscar Dominguez plays on 4" pockets in his homeroom. I also heard that for a few years he was using a cue with a very small dia. I think the guy that told me said it was 10 or 11 mm. I have a 10 mm. snooker cue and tried it. At first I would be putting spin on the QB when I wanted to hit center ball, but after awhile I was spilting the pockets on long straight in shots. I think it's a great way to practice center ball. It made me bear down more and my pocketing has got a lot better from it. Johnnyt

I swear by a small diameter tip. With a small tip I can see EXACTLY where the tip is going to impact the cb. With a 13mm tip I'm guessing... I'm hitting low left instead of exactly at 7pm on the cb clock face. Z2 for me!

At the Expo in 2009 I sat next to Oscar during a Pro match, but didnt know who he was. When I figured things out we chatted about cues and his 9mm tip. Low deflection is a given with a 9mm tip, so I wanted to know ......what he likes in a cue.

My joy came from the fact that Oscar was a regular dude.....and liked talking shop like we all do. I also like the fact that he had a ton of respect for his Pop, and had a healthy respect for the Champs that came before us all.

If I was going to sponsor a player it would be a good dude like Oscar no doubt.

the excellent performance at the Mosconi helps also! :)

Oscar has gone to a bigger diameter shaft but I'm pretty sure it's still well under 13mm. I think the small shaft is in his DNA since Ernesto has used skinny wood for as long as I can remember.

JohnnyT, maybe one reason it took some adjustment but then you got good on the long straight shots is the skinnier shaft probably has a lot less deflection. It may actually be the first LD shaft - before all the high tech engineered stuff came along.

Yeah but shafts that thin can get real whippys at high speeds. Thats why he said he switched back to thicker ones. The trick is to find something in between that works for you.

Yeah, that's true. They've improved on the LD concept, no doubt.

I used to play with a smaller diameter shaft also, and they do have less deflection. The butt was pretty thin too. I used to call it the toothpick.

I'd use my snooker cue once in a while... really helped me with cuing. The tip diameter/cue ball size relationship forced me to really buckle down.

I had a Viking with a 11.5 tip from 1975-1987. I sold it when I started nusing school. I thought Iwas going to quit pool for good at that time, but the soon as I got my first job in a hospital I started playing again. I wish I never sold it. Johnnyt
