Smoke makes my eyes sting

I hate smoke. I have been playing pool seriously for a decent amount of time now and the only thing that can REALLY throw me off my game is smoke. It's not because it makes my throat hurt (it does, but I can ignore that when playing), it's because my eyes sting and get blurry in an environment with several cigarettes burning at once.

My questions to the forum are do any of you have experience with different eye drops, and which kind worked the best in a smoke-filled environment?

I have experience with lots of eye drops but not in a smokey setting. Patanol (rx) works best for my allergies, but I'm out of it and can't get any more unless I fake some rhinitis and red eyes (allergy season isn't here yet). Is there anything OTC I can use that lasts a decent amount of time and allows for clarity and focus in a smokey pool hall? Don't bother responding if you're going to say Visine; that stuff is terrible for your eyes.

No solution for you, other than push the room owners for meaningful filtration. Yeah, that's likely.
Don't suppose you could move to a smoking ban state. :)

i have the same problems. in former times i could do nothing against it. just had to bear it...:(
since last year we have a new health protection law, which forbids smoking in pubs, excepting in seperated smoker lounges. this is very comfortable!

these glasses are availible in all prescription values and works for peeling onions. and they are looking cool

Ha! What he said. I woulda phrased it: Better pick a differnt sport!.

I hear VA is not too far away from banning smoking indoors. Can you imagine, VA? What is next, CA becomes communist?!

Oh, how I hope you're right!

That would be sweet! Of course that would put my home room in jeopardy because they are on the fourth floor with no access to the outside other than a VERY slow elevator. Don't know how they'd accommodate the smokers.

OP, have you tried contact lens drops? Readily available and not bad for your eyes like Visine.

Try Collyrium

Try Collyrium by Bausch & Lomb www.bausch.com
it is a eye wash that sooths ,refreshes & cleanses the eye. recommended uses stated on the box are " is for cleansing the eye to remove loose foreign material or whenever a soothing eye rinse is necessary"
it is also labeled for " Hospitals ,dispensaries & clinics: for emergency flushing of loose foreign material or chemicals from the eye"

It has came in two sizes a large 4 oz bottle order # 620738 & it also came in a small visine size as well.
It can be difficult to find .I have used it for years for eye allergies & as a eye wash in shop first aid boxes.

It is a over the counter product .Check with your pharmacist ,I get my local pharmacy to order mine in.

I haven't tried contact lens drops. I'll give it a shot. Any other eye drop suggestions? Not looking for advice like "move to a non smoking state" or "wear goggles" :D Thanks though!

edit: Collyrium sounds like artificial tears (which I have, and it works fine but lasts about a minute). I want something that will last for at least a rack.

Try taking a few drops of Visine...orally. Then wash it down with large
quantities of Southern Comfort, then you won't even notice a little eye
stingy. The only thing the smoking ban has accomplished (here in AZ)
is reduce the number of pool rooms. We now are down to two decent
rooms in a metro area of over 3 million. We (smokers) were here first.
Pool rooms and bars were not meant to be pristine environments.
Don't worry in Va, your favorite room will be replaced by Gold,s Gym
6 mos. after the ban!!!!

Gold's is already on the second and third floors. I think they'll attract more pool players when they go non-smoking. It's the poker players that they would lose and they are the majority of the customers (at least on my league night) and it seems like every last one of them smokes.

MM...does that mean if I get to the pool hall first that no one is allowed to smoke as long as I'm there???;) :D

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Not this old harangue again.
I glad to find out smokers were here first, I thought we were all born not smoking, silly me.

Personally, I would not reccomend this:
Try taking a few drops of Visine...orally.

But I also hate smoking in the pool rooms. It gets out of hand and the smell on your skin and clothes is wretched. I go outside frequently to get some fresh air. I also use TEARS brand of eyedrops. They make a type that has heavier lubricant (blurrs vision at first then it gets better).

When I lived up north I used to go to a adult bar that got so bad sometimes that you could not see the otherside of the bar. One day they broke down and bought some floor stand smoke eaters and it made such a huge difference that you would swear it became a non smoking bar.

I'd be willing to bet that eventually they stopped maintaining them and the old conditions returned. If owners had only maintained their air filtration equipment in the first place ....

Point of clarification....We were reduced to only two decent pool rooms in this town long before the smoking ban went into effect.

Are you by chance and Indian as wel?....I think they are the only ones that can make that claim.

I suppose since you were "here first" you get to make that decision as well...Actually I wonder if (to a smoker) a smoke filled dive bar IS a pristine envirioment.

The #1 issue for me at my local pool hall used to be the smoke until the smoking ban went into effect in NJ.

I don't notice smoke. Like all the other distractions. If it ain't a white ball, or a colored ball with a number, I pay it no mind whatsoever, but that's just me. I guess if the smoke obstructed my view of the table it would be a problem, but that would mean the room was on fire, and in that case I would grab my sticks and leave.

Try the "TheraTears" brand. These are the drops the doctor told me to use after my lasik surgery, and they work very well.

i second the bausch and lomb stuff.. i used to wear contacts, but now i wear glasses but i still use the drops in situations like that.
