Smoking and Pool Halls

I am not a smoker, but the one thing I liked about smoking in pool halls was when it was the other guys turn to play he was right there and someone didn't have to go search for him to keep everything moving in a decent manner. It seems like everyone that smokes you have to go looking for when it is their game to let them know its their turn. Other than that it is nice to be able to breathe and not smell like a cigarette butt.

I am sure smokers see this as a good idea, but I doubt non-smokers do. Every time
you open the door to that room, smoke is going to flood out, and each person that comes out of that room is going to stink of smoke. Smokers can't usually detect that stuff, but it is a very strong smell to non-smokers. If the room has excellent ventilation it will be better, but still not great overall.

They had one of these glass booths at Cowboys stadium and the area for 50 feet around it stunk.

Smokers have no idea how much they stink. Back in the 80s I was a pack and a half guy and played regularly at the same place. Then I quit smoking using the Schick method, and the 5 days of the method meant that I wasn't at the pool hall for those days. It worked and I haven't had a puff since.

But what a revelation the next time I went into the pool hall. When I came out I kept wondering what that stink I was smelling was. And then I realized it was my clothes. I had no idea that I stank like that from the smoke in my clothes. It was an eye-opener.

Colorado has received so much tax money from the sale of marijuana in all of it's various forms that the state put out a referendum in which they asked "What would you like? Would every citizen of Colorado like to receive a check or do you want it to go towards education?" They voted to put it towards education. To the contrary, Colorado has their act together.

Any state that allows alcohol to be legal but makes pot illegal is irrational.

That's why they call it dope. Decriminalize...not legalize. If money was not involved it would never be considered. Recreational pot. Medical pot. That's why it's call pot. Sanity has gone to pot. The Dr. writing Rx's....$100 per script....and the lines are long. Fk me. I should have stayed in school.

What nonsense. I guess you DO blow smoke up our butts. Insanity is allowing alcohol to be legal.

So nice to see so many of the sheeple following the masters dictates. Your masters said smoking is so terrible, so you must believe it. Never question it, just believe. Never look at any real studies on it, never look into how their studies are done. Just believe. Your masters are so proud of you all. ;)

Oh, by the way, you all are a bunch of hypocrites too. You cry and whine about the smell and dangers of smoke, yet have zero problems driving cars to get where you want to go that pollute the air everyone has to breathe. But, let's not go there, because that is something you like to do and want to do.

I'm saying they are rigged. (smoking health and damage figures) I have seen it first hand, and have had doctors tell me the same. Follow the money, as with everything. I'm not saying smoking doesn't harm anyone. I am saying that it is so blown out of proportion that it has become absolutely ridiculous.

Points well made Neil..Non-smokers appear oblivious to another proven fact!..If you walk just a few blocks, in any big city, you are ingesting more harmful carcoginans into your lungs, (in just a few minutes) than smoking several packs of cigarettes!..Thats because all of us pollute with our cars, trucks and buses, many times worse than smokers do, with their one "inconsiderate habit"!..Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

PS..One must wonder, did all non-smokers hide under the covers as kids, so the boogy man wouldn't get them?...I mean really..how scary is 'smoke'??? :p

Funny I have never seen any pics of black lungs from people that work in big cities but I have seen pics of black lungs from people that smoke several packs of cigarettes a day.

If cigarettes aren't harmful - those of you that have wives, daughters, grand kids - please have them smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a day while they are pregnant. Post the results in 9 months.

Sorry Watchez, can't buy it!..In the 30's, long before all the 'scare tactics', my mother owned a bar..She drank and smoked heavily, during her all of her pregnancies!..All 5 of my older siblings (but one) lived normal healthy lives, well into their 80's..The one who didn't make it, passed at age 60..Oddly enough, she was also the only non-smoker, out of all of us!..Go figure!

PS..Cancer has been a major killer for many years now..They say you are either 'cancer prone' from birth, or you're not!.. I believe that also shows, that ones inherent genes are the major factor in determining health and longevity!

There are always going to be exclusions. I do believe in genes. I have friends that eat fast food every day and seem to be ok. Never even come close to eating a vegetable. Other people wouldn't last a year doing it.

Just like if I drive my car 100 mph every day, I might live. But there is a higher likelihood that eventually it will kill me. So I keep it under 80 mph. :p

My dad smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day and had his first heart attack at 45. Dead at 53. His sister who never smoked lived to 78. (see how this works).

Again - if smoking is ok, not only have your female loved ones smoke when they are pregnant but bring their newborns into bars and pool rooms with smoking, let em breath it all in to those new lungs of theirs. When you don't have time to go to the pool room, just light up a cigarette and blow the smoke in their face. Ain't gonna hurt them - so says Dick and Neil.

p.s. I'm here now and working in Phoenix for over the next month. I'll take a ball from the HOF San Jose Dick.

Sorry Watch, I retired from pool for good about 4 yrs. ago..However, I will give up $300 to $100, and play you some head up 'smoking' or drinking! :p

Sorry..What else can one use to make his point in a debate, but life experiences?..We can't all have access to 'proven, verifiable scientific facts', (like Watchez :o)

The problem is that this is not how things like carcinogens work. What the studies show is that the incidence of cancers (especially but not exclusively lung, larynx and mouth cancers) in smokers is much higher than in comparable groups of non-smokers. So if a study shows that men smokers are 23.3 times more likely to get lung cancer and women smokers are 12.7 times more likely, that still doesn't mean that all smokers or even most smokers will get it. In fact, the article I got this from says that even a heavy smoker "only" has a more than a 25% chance of getting lung cancer.

So the problem with anecdotal evidence (e.g., what happened with you and your siblings) is that it does nothing to refute the studies. It is not "smoke and you WILL get cancer and die" but "smoke and your chances of getting cancer and dying go up dramatically". And yes, some non-smokers will get it too.

Below is the link to the article. I don't warrant that it is accurate as to the figures, but the concepts are clear and the evidence that smoking increases your risk of cancer is overwhelming. But, it is your life and at your age the stakes are smaller. For those who are younger and with families, the risks are pretty high.

Oh so typical of the "zealot" crowd. Make up stuff to make your point. I never said smoking wouldn't hurt anyone. In fact, I said just the opposite. What I did say, is that the propaganda about it is B.S. And that the statistics are rigged.

I am a perfect example of the above. I have stage 4 COPD. When I first went to the drs, was because of an accident at work (insultation installer at the time) where I had about 10 gallons of isocyanite (sp?) spilled on me. It almost killed me.

Being respiratory related, before the dr. would even treat me, he had to fill out a survey. First question- Do you smoke? Second question- Have you ever been around anyone that smoked? 3rd question- there wasn't one! My breathing problems were now smoking related. The fact that I was way over exposed to isocyanide never even made it into my medical history, nor did the fact that I installed insulation for a living. I was given a breathing treatment and sent on my way. (that dr. admitted that the survey was a crock and he was against it, but had to fill it out. It was designed to show that smoking causes lung problems.)

As a kid, I had bronchitis almost every year. Have a lot of scar tissue in my lungs because of it. I installed insulation for about 5 years. (all types)( Social security dr. even asked what I did for a living, and when I told him, he stated that all my buddies would be seeing him in time also.) I smoke. My dr. even stated that my lung condition is way too bad to be from smoking. I'm just not old enough yet for that to take effect. Yet, that is all that is in my medical record. There is no record of the other contributing factors to my condition.

So, you see, they will make the stats look like whatever they want them to.

Very interesting article Gideon..however nothing new we all didn't already surmise!..I hope you realize, most of my rattling on in defense of smoking, is 'tongue in cheek'!..I would certainly not recommend my chosen lifestyle, to any of my loved ones, or anyone else for that matter!....My main thrust in defending my right to smoke, is the ultra obnoxious way many non-smoker's attack us!..It gets very tiring at times, and I often find myself making foolish remarks while defending it!..(which tends to piss me off even further )

Neil --- So smoking is bad but it is exaggerated so not 'that' bad?

You sound like Obama not wanting to commit that acts of violence committed by a muslim are a terrorist attack.

Nothing like Obama. Yes, smoking is not good for you. And, yes, the propaganda about it is mostly B.S. Today, they try and make smoking out to be the cause of almost all disease. Now, they even have commercials stating that pets are dying from second hand smoke. Even though they only live around 15 years at most. Total B.S.

But, people buy into it. People want to be led, and people will believe about anything if they are told it enough times.

Take all the chances you want, but you do not have a right to force me to take the same chance.

Here's to smokin till YOU die:thumbup:

Whenever that may be

YOU... lay them down. Now. Do it for your family. I know a few people that thought only other people get lung cancer. And Oh I can't stop. They stopped alright. Stopped smoking and everything else. It's less painful to stop smoking than to suffer dying from cancer. You can do it. You fk'n better do it. Not a joke. Live longer...play pool longer. Stop for one day and you got it made. After you stop for 1 day...do it for one more day. And so on...after a short time the urges go away and it's one day at time after that. Stop now...once you get diagnosed that's it. You do not get a warning. You do not get another chance. But you have to chase it away. It does not leave on it's own. You can do it man.
I smoked a pack and a half a day for many years. Finally quit in February on an ecig. Worked like a charm. Definitely not harmless but will ease the transition.

Save oodles of money too. Pack of smokes is $16 now where I live and close to 20 for the premium brands. I calculated the money I was spending and realized I could be driving a BMW m3 instead of a Mazda 3 without doing anything but quitting smoking......I still don't own a BMW but the math works lol

I know I shouldn't do this, but...

Acts of violence committed by a Muslim may, or may not be, a terrorist attack, just like acts of violence committed by a Christian (like Oklahoma City) or a Jew or an atheist may or may not be a terrorist attack. It all depends on their motive.

Kill people because of a personal beef with them, or because you are just generally crazy (like driving your truck into a pool hall), not a terrorist. Kill people because of their race, religion or other beliefs with a view to using the violence to influence a government or community or for other political purposes, then yes, a terrorist.

Innocent victims, of course, equally killed or maimed, no matter the motive.
