Smoking and Pool Halls

A local Legion Club near where I live tried to hold on to allow smoking and the crowd that gathered to keep the legion club open kept it in a pretty good profit making club which donated a lot to different programs in our small area.
At the time when the issue of smoking or not came about, I noticed new faces showing up to complain and complain about the smoking and it should be banned.
It was kind of weird as I never saw those people at the establishment before as they did not drink, they did not smoke, they did not play pull tabs, they did not volunteer their help, they really didn't do a darn thing, accept show up to ban smoking from a club they never went to. However, if there was a party, like a wedding dance or a anniversary, they were there for free food and maybe a free beer or two.
The ban went into effect and these people disappeared, as well as half the smoking people.
Now, the Legion Club building is on the market for sale and when I do see the people who wanted the smoking ban in effect, they are at garage parties that are thrown by " people who smoke ".

I get the smoking ban !!!, but, why can't they just put a sign up on the outside of the building. Smokers welcome or This is a non smoking establishment.

It's to bad so many peoples hard work for years have gone down the tubes by people who never had any intention of visiting a bar or a persons establishment in the first place.

This is just my opinion. Heading to the garage.

Survived?

Ontario banned smoking in restaurants, bars and pool halls a decade ago. It's been great for me as a player. Pool halls seem to have survived.

I don't know, so many pool halls have shut down since the smoking bi-laws came into effect in Ontario. I know many owners who fault the no smoking policy as the cause of their demise.

p.s. I don't smoke and hate that stuff.

Where in Ontario? Which pool halls are you talking about?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but you've got me curious.

The other thing that smokers don't seem to want to admit is that smoking is not a hobby, it's a habit. While there are plenty of other bad habits, smoking happens to be one habit that is obtrusive and offensive to others as well as potentially hazardous to smokers or others that are around. So your habit is one that is offensive, potentially hazardous, and it controls your life. I would love to see it banned period but that ain't happening I'm quite sure ;) The only time alcohol is obtrusive or offensive is when someone can't handle their booze. Otherwise the beer or drink I'm consuming doesn't affect others around me....smoke on the other hand isn't contained and it affects everyone around it whether they mind or not. So no comparison between smoking and drinking.... And yes, I realize there are lots of drunk driving deaths but the decision to drive in a condition that actually causes you to crash is also a symptom of someone that can't handle their booze.

I quit smoking earlier this year. Even when I was smoking I was in favor of a complete ban on the sale of tobacco products.

It will never happen because governments are too dependant on the revenue.

it takes me back

I have never smoked. When I was a kid, I would hear, if you smoke it will stunt your
growth. So since I was shorter than almost everyone, I figured that if I did,my only
chance for a job, would be a jockey, or be in the circus. It never bothered me much,
other than if it was really smokey my eyes might water a little. That seemed like a
very small price to pay to be just a very young kid hanging out, and playing in a big
action pool room. But that was a long time before everyone became allergic to it.
It's a miracle that the second hand smoke, or global warming, or the chafing I could
get from towels in the restroom ( before the blow hand dryers) didn't kill me. Now
when I smell it, I take a deep breath and it takes me back to the days of the smoke
filled pool rooms, with action on every table, and if the smoke, or foul language, and
God knows what else offended you, you were told to go somewhere else
jack

This is my point..... lots of people have simply decided to go somewhere else.

there are pool halls in the Philippines that do not allow smoking but provide a "smoking lounge" instead so players dont have to go outside the pool hall to smoke.

Mark Griffin's new room

Mark's new room in Las Vegas will be non smoking, it is the nicest room you have ever seen, 26 tables, 25 tv's, full bar, and a fantastic new menu!! We will be opening very soon, this room is off the charts!

I haven't smoked for years, but no smoking has put a lot of pool only and other Mom & Pop rooms that were in just about every town in the country out of business. Big rooms that have money behind them got out in front of the ban and had some place to smoke away from the tables and sometime away from the bar. I quit cold, but if I had to do it again I'd try the vapor cig first. I use to smoke 2 packs of Camel non-filter a day plus 3-4 rolled weed a day. And I inhaled. Johnnyt

I think the heavy smoke and foul language is what keeps pool from being a family activity. I know there are poolhalls I won't go to because after 10 minutes you smell like smoke.--Smitty

mark already said his room will be smoking but with good air filters. if that is the case he is doomed, imo. many are so behind the times still thinking that smokers make you money in a business.

First, to be clear, I'm not knocking anyone for smoking etc....

But.... I do think that the fact that most (many at least) pool halls allow smoking could be a big reason that lots of people don't pick up the activity. I love to play pool, but have a really hard time going somewhere that makes my clothes smell like smoke just because I'm there for a few hours (not to mention the negative health implications).

Given the choice to play golf (outside in the fresh air) or play pool (in an environment that is given to smoke), no wonder so many pick up the alternate activity.

It is possible that this one defining characteristic excludes a large number of individuals from an activity that would otherwise be enjoyable to them etc....

I also don't think that individuals would actually stop going to pool halls just because they couldn't smoke inside. Especially if these establishments provided a nice outside area for smokers.

I think this option would clearly be a win/win!

Does anybody know if the majority of pool rooms in China and/Taiwan allow smoking?
