Smoking vs. smoke free

I opened my room 20 years ago and the smoking ban went into effect in 1998. My business dropped immediately by about 10%. I was disgusted with the law, because smaller bars could thumb their nose at it and the police would do nothing. In a few years however, most of my customers returned because they really liked my place. Now I go home and my hair doesn't reek of cigarette smoke and the clientele overall seems a little better. I don't need to worry about second hand smoke either. So, even though I don't like the government sticking it's nose in people's businesses, it's worked out to be a pretty good thing here in California

Danny- I have to agree with you. While my room was going down the toilet at least it was cleaner, smelled better.....and so did I.

In a smokeless room

I'm a smoker, and I do respect the tables and do not smoke near them, However If I cannot have a cigarette in the bar I do not go back to it.

You won't be missed. I think it really funny how many smokers go into a poolroom and don't shoot for most the time they are there. They just chain smoke. Good for them I say. And that why many players walk out or die of Cancer. Owners too. Lost a few good friends that way.
Truly sad.

Yes they have.

I'm calling bullshit on this one............. no bar or pool hall has ever lost a dime because it went to non smoking.........................

If your shooters smoke you will eat it. Happened here. Lasted two weeks. Mostly minors and undercover investigation caused great stress for the owners.

Smoking is a must if you are in it for the cash

If you want your business to be as profitable as possible you must have smoking. It's really that simple.

Make an effort to encompass your ENTIRE market, not just a part of it.

This is basic business 101.

It's really not difficult to provide an environment to appease both smokers and non-smokers ... You can have a designated smoking room with a huge fan system ... If you have a bar you can allow smoking in there ect...

This is really a matter of why you decided to open a business in the first place.

Is it your desire to be as profitable as possible ... or do you have other priorities for the function of business.

Perhaps your more interested in owning a 'hobby business' where maximizing profits may not be the main objective.

Good Luck and Happy Shooting.

I m a smoker-

but i cannot understand how a smoker doesn t care a shit about his ppl around him. It s clear and proven that smoke effects your healthness- so a smoker have to follow the given law (whereever it maybe).

All are complaining that there are no young ppl following. that there is no future for the sports of billiards.
Do you, as smokers really think that you are a good example/idol to look up to for the youth/pupils?

imo that s not even a discussion worth. any area where kids, youth, pupils or whatever is allowed to go- and also an area where tournaments will be held have to be a non-smoking area.

lg from overseas.

In some parts of the country the closing of pool halls has been attributed to, in part, the decline in attendance due to smoking bans.

Personally, I don't care if they smoke or not. Before WA went to a state-wide smoking ban...every place I played had SmokeEaters in great working order. Even with contacts, I had no issues.

I don't believe a word of that............ rumors with no proof... just he said she said...............

None smoking is the way to go

None smoking is the way to go (Start) If you will have enough room for 1 OR 2 private rooms Maybe put smoke eaters in there so you can have smokers too. But I'm pretty sure that Many states will follow the non-Smoking Law. If that comes you will only lose smokers who would rather smoke then play pool. At Least you have a choice we in NJ/NY area don't have that choice.

I'm with you on this Kim. Here in Wisconsin the ban just happened to occur at the same time our economy went in the $hitter. Actual we were already deep in the hole when it took effect. Domino effect IMHO.

You can't grow a business without young clientel

They smoke. It is like loosing the next generation or two of players. I don't smoke. I just see who spends the most. Kids. College age and younger.
They gotta be cool man.

FloridaPoolGal- I'm a former room owner that lost my business due to smoking change.

I also used to have a policy that worked. Never had a bit of trouble in my room. The people that cause the trouble are the people that come in with a player and just hang around. You know, two people will come in to play and four people will want to watch. My saying was "Oh, that's fine. You can watch, but I still have to add you to the table." In other words, if they are there they are paying.

Bob

Are you sure it was the smoking change that made people not want to come to your room Bob?

Exactly :) My local pool room (non smoking) would love for you to come with a buddy to play, and bring 4 more to watch and most likely spend money on beer, food, video poker, etc......

Oh, and when the smoking ban went into affect 4 years ago, we had 16 teams in our league... we had 16 after the ban, and we have 16 today, usually with a waiting list for teams to get in. I know of NOBODY that quit our league due to not being able to smoke.

Played in a pool Hal with smoking for years. It had the smoke eaters and all that jazz. In Houston, the city went non-smoking everywhere. The change was fantastic. Not only could you breath better your vision improved. I try to avoid smoking rooms whenever possible now. However, I have noticed that the most popular pool halls are outside of Houston where smoking is ok. I think it is really too bad because I believe the smoking affects the non-smokers as much as the smokers. I think smoking should be banned in any public location; if you want to kill yourself with cigarettes that is your business but please leave me out of it.

Hello, I just opened my room, Broadway Billiards in Eureka, Ca. My husband and I purchased our building which had an existing smoking room, which we removed to make room for more tables. I am a smoker but I never have smoked in my own home and thought it would make better business sense to have smokers, smoke outside, and keep a nice clean environment inside for all customers. Let's face it smokers will still patronize your business, as long as you give them a place outside. Good luck, hope everything works out.

I thought smoking was banned everywhere in California? Not so?

Just give them somewhere to not get drowned by rain and I think it's pretty much understood that's the world we live in now.

Good luck with your room. Give them no reason to leave. Food, beverage and lottery. Hell even turn a blind eyes to the drugs. You will do ok.

Thanks guys for your opinion. I didn't have a full bar just sold beer. No food or video poker. The majority of the kids came in with other kids. Those are the ones. I used my common sense. If you were a regular I wouldn't bust chops. And yes, I lost 60% of my revenue immediately when the ban came into effect. It came back 20% but it never came back after that.

Ok, so I'm in the process of opening up and have one major question. I have a great location, the rent and building are perfect. The owner is insisting that there not be any smoking in the building. It is in a small strip mall, with a large overhang in the front where I can put tables / benches. I have polled the local pool players and they have been very split. The non smokers say it would be great. The smokers say its financial suicide. I would be the only room within an hour radius offering nice 9 foot tables in a clean environment, there are a few smoking bars that have lousy equipment and dumpy environments. I need to know that non smoking will make it if I proceed with this building, but at this point I'm just super confused. Advice???

did you ever open your room???
if so is it smoking or non??
where is it located??
thanks:grin:
