I set this up so you can envision what Doug went through. The man you knew left us when they said no surgery. I hope contributions can further advance the treatments for Congestive Heart Failure. I appreciate all of you more then words can say.

Doug suffered severely in the later weeks. The CHF and complications from the meds caused side affects that devastated his body and spirit.

Treatments for patients suffering with this illness need to be addressed quickly. This is an illness that requires aggressive treatment. When a patient has additional medical conditions, personalized attenion become more neccessary. My husbands treatment was handled very slowly, We believe if this procedure was done 3 months ago when he was stronger he may have been a better candidate for this surgery. He had a strong will to live as you know.

The Hospital which handled his care could only operate within its own means. It is greatly over-extended. We did appreciate the help we received to stabilize and make him comfortable. The nursing staff were attentive & thorough, but they are still limited to what could be done. The physicians should have been this way.

Doug became morbidly obese, was diabetic, had leaking heart valves and this made his illness a difficult challenge. They gave him dietary requirement and he followed them. I could see the weight loss but the damn scale did not show it.

The fluids that build up cause so much discomfort on the legs and pulmonary system. Diuretics become a major part for relief. Over time it became less effective and caused its own side effects; such as leg cramps and stomach cramps from kidney strain. We then treated these symptoms with Potassium but increased the doseage of the Diuretic. The kidney will become lazy and unable to function on its own. The drug becomes ineffective and then dialysis becomes another option. This creates more hospital visits, more problems to treat, more doctors with opinions and more delays. Shortness of breath and loss of strength will set in, it will become difficult to get around.

This web page was one of Doug's last requests. If you are so inclined, please make a donation in Doug's honor so that the American Heart Association may continue to help others with similar problems.

I have lost my husband and friend. He was the only person who believed in me. He was willing to guide me through life. He accepted all my annoying lttle quirks. He was willing and very vocal with corrective advice whether I liked it or not. It was how he handled it, gingerly but honest. He always tried to offer suggestions, and options to heighten my awareness. He was usually correct. Doug was raised by his mom. She always found the best and smartest way to do something and it rubbed off on Doug. He always worked hard to find a way that made our lives happy, full of fun, comfortable and secure. The Marine Corps instilled in him the methodical, logical way he conducted himself throughout life.

I will miss having him here and his zest for life. Doug has given me a lifetime of memories to draw from and wisdom to make good choices throughout my life. He liked fishing, pool and poker and enjoyed the people who became his friends while doing these things. This is a tribute to Doug, my hero.

I LOVE YOU MAN.

Barbara

You guys in the USA have no idea how badly you need proper health care. How you could have companies and profits looking after lives is beyond me. He should have moved to Canada. The government pays and there is never a question of cost. My grandfather is 93 and still gets the care of a newborn.

I spoke with smorg in a pm regarding his health problems. I had a heart attack 2 years ago this coming feb. and told him of the great care I recieved. He said I was lucky because of my age, they would spend the money to keep me around. If I was his age, they wouldn't.

Canada has health care not Business care. If an operation will prolong your life, you get it. I laugh at what the people are saying on the news to beat down the Canadian health care to prove that the Health reform will be no good.

I or anyone in Canada can go to any hospital and recieve free treatment regardless of the ilness. Our only problem with the Canadian health system is the USA health system. Doctors here make $140 - $250,000 and choose to leave for the bigger wages in the U.S. The fewer doctors and long lines from people using the free coverage can cause delays. Some seek treatment in the U.S. Even this can be at no cost because health care may cover it. Emergencies always get to the front of the line. With my heart problem, I don't wait in line.

Congrats Jason re US open

Congrats Jason re US open and also in your description of Canada Health Care
You said it very WELL!! , I watched my parents received care with excellent doctors and hospitals. I also know that some follow the $ sign and move, but sometimes they return to Canada.
I wish some day it will make no difference what country you are and care will be the same, may not see this day in my life time but maybe my kids will see it.
Have a nice day all, remember that life is short!!
You are becoming a well know player Jason and wish you good fortunes

Haven't you heard? If we did that we would be socialist and the world would end (yes before 2012)

Not to mention that the health care lobby has LOTS of money to bride our wonderful law makers with. From the looks of it now, even if we get some reform it will be so little no one will even notice the change.

I would move to Canada if you could move Canada a little bit south...somewhere near the Tampa Fl area would be nice.

We tried the move a few years ago and it came to a sudden halt. The snow would melt south of New York. We currently have a team of scientist working on sustaining snow south of 40 degrees latitude. We have thousands of dog teams staked at the boarder. They are not chained but waiting to hear mush. The Canadians are a comin.

This just made me tear up! Such a loss! Any human that provides humor and caring to anyone deserves to live as long as possible to make the workd a better place. Health care is ridiculous and Jason said it, it is a business and its not about prolonging life, its about making the most or saving the most and in profits not lives. Very sad indeed. God bless all of those that are left without help they need to continue life.

yea, this makes me sad to read. EVERY person should get the care they need regardless of "insurance" availability.

not long ago I went to the emergency room for a small problem....3 hours later I had a common prescription, and a bill for $7900....I have no insurance, and they said how will you pay?....I said CASH! I pay out of pocket. I went and spoke with the hospital finance admin and they told me if I could pay $700 cash we would be even? :)

I peeled off $700 and left smiling....it was a love hate kinda day for me, but I consider myself lucky to have the cash to do that.

I REALLY hope the Obama team can work something out....

I miss Smorg!

Debate thread

What some of you may not be aware of is that Smorgy was in the care of a Government managed health care system. The VA. If he still had insurance, private health care would have been available to him and MAY have extended his life.

PLEASE, let's not make this thread a debate about healthcare. It's a reminder of who Doug was and what his final wish was, to support the American Heart Association.

Thanks,

Ray

I posted in another thread earlier this morning and used the phrase "imo". I felt guilty and post as much. It's like stealing a copyrighted line! He owned it!! :groucho:

Rest In Peace Doug.

Doug was a Marine, pool player, card player and antiquer(sp). He loved discussion boards and the many friends he made through them.

Ray,

We must be on the same wave link as I was thinking of Doug and found an old thread he created (04/01/03) entitled Wheelchair U.S. Open Tournament. Nobody had posted a comment even after all this time so I was impelled, and honored, to do so. Other then a Green Rep from Sunnyday, nobody else has responded. Perhaps it was overlooked because it was under the Tournament Announcements?

AZers: Here's the thread in case you need a place to leave a Green Rep for "The Master"!

I think it is interesting you posted this right now. I think Smorg must be visiting all of us, for some reason. Just a few days ago, I got a bit emotional and out of the blue, without even realizing what I'd done, I changed my avatar back to the one that represents my memories of Doug. I've wondered why I did it and even considered putting another one up, but the badge is still there.

To a true friend who had a heart of something even finer than gold!

Thanks foir the thread, Bigtruck.
