So I watched the SVB vs Efren dvd...

Justin: Don't forget to bring some of the TAR-cues in gold when you are heading outside!

I happen to like Incardona too. He is perfect for commentary. And just to show that there are many opinions about this, I can't stand Grady as a commentator.

I like Fred Agnir, Incardona, Ken Schuman, Jay Helfert, JoeyA and I love it when some of the top-players have something to say. Although, I don't think either Darren Appleton or John Schmidt did too well at the first DCC, but I honestly think they feel the same too :)

Keep up the good work TAR :)

I dunno why anyone beeches about a company that puts out a good product and charges a very reasonable price for it. All I know is that without the streams, I would have never been able to experience the Action room at DCC; I just can't get off work that time of year.

I don't want to sound like a shill for TAR just cuz I'm friends with Justin, but do they really deserve a bad rep cuz Efren didn't play fuggin unbelievable??

Eric >nobody deserves a fair profit

I agree..... This dvd quality may not have been up to par this time around but that will not stop me from buying another DVD from TAR. I think it is great that TAR hooks us up with the best matches:smile: and this is why I will keep on purchasing DVDs from TAR!
Mahalo

I like Billy and Shannon, but thought the pixels were off too. THe cues seemed blurry especially compared to the SVB/Lion match. With that said, I love TAR and what they are doing for the sport and fully intend to support them in whatever they produce.

I disagree

I enjoyed the hell out of the dvd and glad I own it. There will not be many opportunities to get Efren on dvd/tape, and Shane is just awesome to watch. Yes, I did cringe on a few of Efren's shots, but it wasn't because he barely missed shots you don't expect, but it was because of bad cue ball at times. He attempted safeties that are usually lock ups but he would come short and leave a shot or a hit for a return safety or miss position to make the run out harder. That was the biggest surprise. I do agree with all the kisses/scratches on the break I think Efren should have won, but he didn't. That's gambling.

I kind of liked this better because of the human side/errors made by both and to watch how they try to overcome them and keep their composure while doing so for the big dough. This is why I love TAR, they bring that kind of real world action with all the ups and downs right to our computers/living rooms. For that I thank them.

Even the commentary was from the action player's watching action point of view, which I like. I agree that Billie seems to be better in a one-pocket match, but again, he's an action guy watching action and talking about it. In his defense, he loves Efren and just didn't know what to think of him not playing perfect...so it came out in what he said. I believe he was sharing his feelings about the man during the commentary.

Enough of this. I just want to thank TAR for bringing this to us - I am glad a paid $25.

You can't blame the DVD/TAR for how the players played on that particular night, which is kinda how you come across >_<

I mean, I can sorta see it... "they really got my hopes up from their hype and yet the play was subpar"... but it's like a movie with an all-star cast. You want to see their performance and find out the ending and if it turns out not to be Citizen Kane... well, they still have to pay for those A-list actors, producers, etc. It wasn't "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" at least. And you want them to have money just to encourage them to keep doing what they're doing. Think of the DVD as a free gift for your $25 dollar donation towards their continued efforts :P

- I do agree video quality was subpar and took a little away from it. It was like a hi-res stream more than a DVD. And the camera was a bit crooked, though it sounds whiny to complain about it.

- Chesscat nailed it about the commentary. TAR has that kinda underground up-to-the-minute feel and I think a different style of commentary is called for. When top players who are also watching the match just drop in and talk about it informally, it gives you that cool feeling like you're right there sweating the match with the other railbirds. I don't want it to sound like commentary, not in the ESPN or accustats sense of the word.

Billy's commentary used to be more shot-oriented and play-by-play.. he freewheels a little more now. I liked hearing him on accustats and I enjoy his posts here too. But maybe it's possible to get "Billy burnout". Having already heard his opinions on efren, shane, and pool in general, you will not get any surprises in his commentary here. And in some ways that kind of takes some freshness out of it. I'd almost rather hear a totally unprofessional, off the wall newbie commentator who brings new stories, sayings, and opinions. Maybe someone who even says something controversial. Hell, let him cuss and say something a bit dirty now and then. I wanna feel like I'm at the pool hall :P

- It seems a little unfair that you can talk about how efren is playing below his usual speed, but billy can't say the same (with an explanation). It's not a knock on a player to say they're past their prime, though the wrong guy can get his feathers ruffled by the implication. But Effie's not that guy. He's clearly said he felt he played his best when he was in his 20's. Billy's offering an explanation as to why you're seeing this subpar performance. I think that's part of his job.

You don't want some dry, sugarcoated explanation or no explanation at all, right? It'd be awkward if he ignored the elephant in the room and the watcher is left wondering 'isn't someone gonna say something about this? This is unheard of.' (or a less educated watcher might say 'this is that efren guy I keep hearing about? He's not as good as people made him out to be').

Beelzebub? I thought it was one of the Ents from "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers!

And don't forget the guest commentary from Beelzebub in Game 5 when the camera switched views...

I thought he made some good points...

Are you sure it was Beelzebub? I thought it was Treebeard, one of the Ents (talking trees) from "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers"!

...or even Gimli:

He did have some good points, indeed.

JCIN: I'm curious, was this a guest appearance? Did the DCC have to cut a special entrance-way to allow Treebeard in? Or a box for Gimli to stand on to do his short commentary during camera view changes? :D

Although, I don't think either Darren Appleton or John Schmidt did too well at the first DCC

Maybe, just maybe Darren had been drinking before he got on the mic...

That said, his commentary was the highlight of that DVD... That guy is hilarious...!!

When you are watching a long match like that a little levity goes a long way to keeping the audience into it...

Carry on Dynamite...!!

My thinking it was Beelzebub and you thinking it was Treebeard probably says a lot about both of us that might have been better left unsaid... LOL

Deep end?

My thinking it was Beelzebub and you thinking it was Treebeard probably says a lot about both of us that might have been better left unsaid... LOL

Yeah, I guess you're right -- went a little off the deep end on that one. I should've asked if it was instead a guest appearance by John Rhys-Davies, "who did the voice work for Treebeard, Gimli, and other well-known characters." Ah well, impressions, impressions... :)

I'd just like to thank TAR for giving us the opportunity to see action like this, live no less on the ppv event. It's something that is really a blessing to us that otherwise might not get to see anything except edited races to 7 on espn. The players might have not played up to their par but hey, happens to all of us (especially at 4 in the morning.) I would like to mention that I am eagerly awaiting release of the svb vs busta match from a few days later. That was some great shooting (post fire alarm .lol) PLEASE tell me TAR plans to release this one. I'll be quick to put it towards my collection.

I just had to quote this because that is some funny sh!t right there. LOL We are getting ready to upgrade the TAR jet to a G IV.....just like Fiddy uses.

The quality on the SVB/Efren disc is not what all of our other ones are unfortunately. It is either a mastering issue or a capture issue. I am still trying to figure it out. It is the first time it has happened. It pisses me off to tell you the truth but I can only do what I can do.

The first thing I learned doing this business is that you can't please everyone so just do the best you can and stay true to what you started for. We have done that. A lot of people like it and many don't. So be it.

There is not one single commentator we have ever had that someone didnt complain about. Not one, and we have had a bunch in two years. So we just pick the guys we like and we happen to love Billy Incardona. He is the absolute stone nuts at action commentary and we would use him on everything if we could. Shannon did a hell of a job IMO and had me laughing the whole time. If you are looking for ball by ball instructional commentary we have never been very good at that. They captured the spirit of the evening very well IMO but I completely understand if that is not everyone's cup of tea. To each his own.

I don't think $25 shipped for the best American gambler playing the best player of all time a race to 23 for close to 6 figures is out of line (To be honest if the video quality was what our others were it would have been ten dollars more). Probably cause I am such a baller from all that TAR dough rollin in but if anyone is unhappy all they have to do is contact myself or Chad and ask for a refund and they will get it.

I am now going to jump in one of my three TAR owned Ferrari's and go make it rain at the Rhino.

hahaha, I need a laugh like that before I head onstage in Philly :)

By the way, I think we all owe TAR a debt of gratitude.
Those guys are the best thing happening in pool right now, and the matches they put together are some of the most exciting ones I've ever seen.
