Soft hearted........or........Soft headed ???

I went to the local bar/poolhall last night to bang a few and try out my newly aquired J&J j/b cue. after about an hour of watching me a guy at the bar comes over and asks if I'd like to shoot a few....I said sure and he asks if I wanted to play for $5. Why not.....so I rack and win the lag. I see the layout is good for the solids so I take the 3 ball and run 4 more before deciding to play a safe. He kicks and misses so I take BIH and run out. Time to collect right? I tell him nice game and hold out my hand for payment.....fully expecting to hear....double or nothing. Instad this guy proceeds to tell me he is homeless and hasn't eaten for 2 days. He says he watched me play and figured he could beat me for the five and then get something to eat. I'm not about to get real upset over $5 and figured I'd just chalk it up, but I didn't want this guy pulling the same sh!t on the next guy to come in.....so I went to the bartender and asked him if he knew the guy....he told me no and that the fellow had been there for about 2 hours and had asked to be allowed to clean up the place in return for a burger and fries. At this point I had heard enough....I walked over to the guy and handed him $10 and wished him a merry merry. I also explained the foolishness of gambling with money he didn't have......SO was I soft hearted.....or soft headed.....or BOTH....Merry Xmas AZ'ers

Hey. You did as much 'due diligence' as you could. Good call on your part.

Merry Christmas to you, too.

You are the cruelest man ever. How could you?! ;)

That was a super gesture on your part. I doubt many would have been so understanding and generous. You gave a down and out some green, you deserve some in return (as soon as I reload my rep pellets that is!)

In Oregon logger palaver, "You done good" :) (edit) A greenie for you.

Tap Tap to you, its nice when you can do a good deed, and know someone needs it, and is not lying to you. He better be careful playing without the cash though, the next guy might not be a stand up guy like you.

You are a class act in my book. Greens coming your way. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family.

I'm trying to remember what the great, and powerful OZ told the Tinman, and how that had something to do with you being rewarded for your kindness. Something about clicking your heels together four times and ending up in south Philadelphia. Hell, I don't know.
Man, this eggnog is good!
Anyway, well done and Merry Christmas.

Rep to you my friend , I'm glad that this man wasn't lying to you , I'm also glad you help him out , there's not many people that will do that , I'm the type of person that would give the shirt off of my back to help someone out .

I think you may have made this man's christmas a lot better to show that there are people out there that care . good for you I hope you have a Merry Christmas .

God Listens and I am telling him about you--very good action. This will come back to you ten fold.

Good move on your part. Usually in situations like that you get agitated. I bet your emotions did a 360 in about 10 minutes. I remember when i worked for a friend remodeling for about a year in between jobs in the line of work i did.

Once in a while we would leave early if we ran out of materials that we needed or on a Friday as sort of a mini break. I would hit the pool room down the street and almost always in the afternoon there would be guys wanting to play 10 dollar 9 ball.

Problem was some didn't have 10 dollars and were trying to get dope money. I've seen them run off and a couple of irate people in your situation. It's a tough call , nobody wants to be taken advantage of , but at least he told you his motivation.

Good move, all the way around.

I would be your Sancho Panza, anytime.

Ya did good. Not a crime to have a soft head and a soft heart once in awhile. Its not a crime to be hungry either.

You're a good man Dan. I put myself in that spot and I probably only give him the $5.

Thank Y'all for the more than generous accolades. I felt like it was the right thing to do. Your agreement with my actions have reinforced my faith in humanity. God Bless you everyone, may you all be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows your dead...Dan

I feel the situation described is an ethical dilemma. I understand there are many circumstances in which a person is in need.

In the extreme we can assume the person just won the lotto and that will make them a better person because they can pay off their problems. Then people will see how great they are when they spend that money on them.

These are great reasons for investing lots of time and money to become wealthy. It is a well publicized fact how kind and generous wealthy people are. It is something to aspire to be. (Wealth = Human, Little Wealth = unsuccessful person)

If I was really wealthy I'd provide a whole network media station to tell people how my wealth can do positive things for other people.

The important things in life are the things people need like food and money. Anything else is risking too much.

danquixote...Nice job! I would have probably just bought him dinner. Many times I have offered food (rather than cash) to someone who says they're hungry...and not just in the poolroom. Rep to you, for a good deed done well!
