Some Good Ideas Never Get a chance on here

A big reason some good ideas are shot down on AZ is because there are so many on here in the industry or the no name nut hangers of them. If your idea doesn’t profit them or would cut into their profits or heaven forbid ask them to change something, you will be shot down fast. I know that most ideas to make pool better for players, fans and industry are not well thought out or have been tried before and didn’t work. I’ve given my share of crazy ideas on here over the years also. But once in awhile someone has an idea that has promise, only to be shot out of the water quickly for no other reason than that it wouldn’t profit them. Johnnyt

Sometimes I think it's a matter of big egos. I know pro players definitely have big egos.

On this forum, if you don't follow the piped piper with the big ego and all of his/her minions, then every single thing you post is shot down with ridicule and sarcasm.

I've never been one to follow the money. Just because somebody has deep pockets, it doesn't give them a free pass to write vulgar and/or mean-spirited posts. Their words should not necessarily be considered as pool gospel just because they can post up a couple dimes.

I think it boils down to egos getting bruised. Some members on this forum definitely have a strong opinion of themselves. In one sense, it is good to have self-esteem in life.

It's okay to disagree with another opinion, but sometimes it's the method used to counter an opinion that is key. We are all human members of God's family and as such we should each treat our brothers and sisters with dignity.

What would be an example? You seem to be under the impression that industry people are making a lot of profits and they are here in this forum to stifle ideas that would reduce that profit.

So please provide some examples.

What is that idea that has promise which got shot out of the water so quickly?

I think I had one of those the other day. In the thread about "handicapped tournaments hurting pool" I suggested that if you're going to handicap local tournaments, instead of spotting games they should give odds on the money by making the entry fee for the stronger players pay a very high entry and the weaker players paying less down to almost nothing (like a buck) for the totally helpless players. I think this format would give the weaker players their moneys worth and give them greats odds if they happened to get super lucky, and the top players would have to play on the top of their game or risk losing a tidy sum. Of course the entry would have to be graduated with the skill level of each individual player. When I was in the pool room business I never had any handicapped tourneys. I felt that, me having to assign handicaps to my customer/players would just piss of most of them which defeated the purpose, but if I was still in the business I would give this idea a try.

That would be an interesting idea. But, how would you establish the standard of handicap? Not everyone plays league. What if an unknown player comes in. I think many people would take advantage of this. Just wondering... not shooting it down. I like the idea personally.

What are some other ideas that get shot down?

And remember.... this is just a message board... don't take it as gospel.

Well, I can see where Johnny is coming from. For some reason the majority of people seem to be very against the notion of bringing rotation in as a major game. It's always too long, too complicated, too much math, too hard and too different. I'm always baffled as to why no one plays it, at all in north america.

You'd do it the same way any handicap tournament is done. If you're an unknown you either come in at the highest handicap or you let the tournament director watch you play for a while before the tournament and try to place you as close as possible. This is always an issue with any handicapped tournament, another reason I never did handicapped tourneys in my pool rooms, but a lot of people won't play in a tournament unless it's handicapped.

I totally agree. It seem's when someone gets the ball rolling in the right direction, they get the electric chair. Good job Johny, great post.

And what industry member shot this idea down in order to protect their profit?

Is someone doesnt believe in an idea enough to follow through with it in spite of some negative posts on a message board then I feel they didnt really have that much invested in the idea anyway.

If an idea can be shut down by a few voices then what the hell chance does it have in the real world? The first thing I do when I come up with some idea for whatever is poke as many holes in it as possible. Come at it from all sides to find the weak spots because I know if I don't do it in private someone sure as hell is going to in public.

As long as the discourse is honest and without malice I feel it is healthy. It keeps things sharp.
