Spain joint question

Does any know why burton spain made his cues with the male joint pin on the shafts? Or what the pin size is?

Obviously I could email Joel, but I'd rather not interrupt the man. I still have yet to make his wait list

The screw size is 5/16X18. A Spain shaft will screw right into a Meucci shaft!

I can't think of a good reason to put the screw in the shaft.

Maybe because you had few choices but to use his shafts and have the cue play the way he intended?

Its a mid-west tradition. Ed Laubie (who Burton studied a bit) did it that way some, so did Helmstetter.

Dufferin cues have the pin in the shaft.
What difference does it make?

My guess is, there are only so many ways to be unique, building a cue, and ... if you ever want another shaft, going back to him may have been his thought.

Not to mention somewhere, someone will start saying .... ooh, the hit is better with the male pin in the shaft, and then everybody will want one.

For the record, here's what Burton himself had to say on that: "Once you screw the cue together, the pin's not in the shaft OR the butt. It's in both of them." So Scaramouche is on the right track, and Joel Hercek, like our last poster, believes Burton just wanted to be different. GF
