Spears on points

Do people do that because it looks good and increases the value of the cue or do they do it to hide uneven points?

Problem is, it doesn't really hide them at all if you look close....
They can be used on CNC points to hide the radius at the end of a pocket, as well.

Does it make any difference?

Maybe not. I have a Madison Bob semi-sneaky with points not even close to even which plays good. I have heard people speculate that a guy who can't get the points straight might not have the stuff inside the cue put together right either.

WRONG!!! Some cues, especially conversions made from full splice house cues, can be very difficult if not impossible to get the points all aligned. It depends on how much the cue can be bumped to align the points. If the doner cue is at final size or close, nearly nothing can be done.

This is possibly true in some cases, but like dick says, it's not always possible to make things perfect.

I think a better way to look at it is from the opposite side...
A guy that does very nice, even pointwork, very probably has the stuff inside the cue put together as right as can be.

IMHO - you have debunked the myth yourself.

All this obsession with perfectly even points is the result of guys
who knew how to "even-up" points claiming this was somehow
an indication of a supierior cue.

It was BS then, and still is.

Points

Ginacues points are CNC. I do not hear any complaints about the way "internals" on Ernies' cues. Many roads lead to same destination.
If you want spears... let there be spears.

Even his veneers are inlayed afaik.
The merits of flat-bottom and v-points can be argued all day.

I built one cue with spears at the points at my customers request. I prefer to let the points speak for themselves so have never built another cue with spears at the points.

Well said. Although some people like them, Some Makers absolutely refuse to do them.

i actually kinda like spears at the tip of points in some cases....but i agree with KJ...who cares

i also think that when its done to cover up uneven points, it becomes more obvious as the base of the spear will reveal differently.
