Stack Wrap/Cue Value

I would appreciate some input from the AZ experts here.

I have been reading the threads about Stack Leather wraps and have been thinking about trying it out one one of my cues. The best candidate is an ebony Bluegrass cue that I own. The original wrap is nice patterned leather but has a noticeable seam, and is not very smooth where it joins the butt and forearm. Pic can be seen at:

The cue is an excellent hitter (as Richard's cues are) and it does not really bother me to play with the wrap the way it is.

Question:

Would having Tiger install a non-original stack leather wrap diminish the value of the cue? It is not a high-end Bluegrass, but it is rather unique in that I have never seen another all-ebony plain jain with ivory and silver rings.

Your feedback is welcomed, thank you.

I don't blame you. I can't stand the embossed leather or lizard anymore - it doesn't feel good to me.

It shouldn't lower the value now or in the future because it's a contemporary cue. Wraps are really not a biggie anyway unless they were done by someone known for their leather wraps like Gus, Balabushka (because he hardly did any leather) , Rambow, maybe Ernie.

I don't think it will hurt the value either. The wrap area will not be altered by the installation of the stack wrap so if you, or someone that buys it from you, wants to change the wrap back to embossed leather, it isn't a big deal. It is when you start messing with the original specs of the cue that causes problems with resale value.

Hi David,

With the exception of a handful of the most sought-after cues in their original (old) condition, changing the wrap won't hurt the value of a cue. Quite the opposite, in fact.

In this case, you have a great looking cue by a highly-regarded CM, yet it has a print leather wrap (yuck). PLUS, you state it has a "noticeable seam", which really diminishes the appeal and probably the value.

So having a killer Stack Leather wrap put on will only help the cue!

David,
You should do it. I love the Tiger wrap that is on my current player. Very sweet indeed and asthetically appealing as well. I see no way that it will take away from the value, perhaps enhance it. GO FOR IT.

Thanks to all of you for that input. As soon as we have a league break, I will send it to Tiger. I think I will get a mixed style wrap, 70% black, 30% dark blue.

personally if i were you i would put something other then the black wrap. the green would look SWEET! on that cue IMO.

Nice cue!

I think it would look great. I have thought about stack leather as well for one of my cues. Drop a line when you get it back and let us know what you think.

I agree..

..a stacked wrap will only add to the overall appeal of the cue. The only thing to consider is the color. Personally, I think you could severely limit the future salability of the cue by opting for a color (like green, blue, etc). Staying with neutral colors like black or limiting the amount of secondary color, as you have intended, should maintain the future broad appeal of the cue.

wrap

you can't go wrong with stacked leather. harris isn't known for his leather work either. black and white would accent it and be nuetral. i got a better idea, i'll just take the cue of your hands so you won't have any hard descision to make, lol. i love my harris, always can use more.

Love the Look

Here's a pic of an Ebony TS with a brown and black stacked leather wrap....love the look

Good luck with the wrap ;)

Thanks, Ken. Great looking wrap. I talked to Tony this evening and he is going to send me a template of available colors. Wrap will be smooth Black with an accent color, dark blue probably.

Thanks to all for the input, advice and support. This is a great Forum.

David...

You know what would look killer on the Harris, AND has an incredible feel...cork. You can't see a whole lot of the cork wrap in the picture below, but I think you will get the idea. Cork is a players wrap and holds up very well contrary to what most believe. The cue below is a pfd. Paul executes a cork wrap very well. Just my $.02...;)

i like the sound of the black with the dark blue... it gives it a cool look.. especially on the ebony....

so us some pics when you get the template!

i think stack wraps are butt ugly, and they are the leather equivalent of chartreuse or paisley. :)

Final Wrap

A couple of weeks ago, I asked all of you about the Stack Wraps, pros and cons. I needed to re-wrap my Bluegrass cue because the original installed leather wrap was embossed and was not installed very well at all. I received great feedback from this group and was about to send the cue off to Tiger for a Stack Wrap. On my way home from my GFs house that Sunday, I stopped at Jazz's house to see his cue collection and to feel a number of different styles of stack wraps. He showed me a Ned Morris cue he had purchased from JazznPool (Martin) and it had an old-style very smooth black leather wrap. That did it. It was the best wrap I had ever felt, and the installation was beautiful. I called Martin, shipped him the cue, and got it back in a quick turnaround. I have to say, the installation was fabulous, it looks and feels great. (see pics) Thanks to Jazz for showing me his collection and turning me on to this, thanks to Martin who did a fabulous job, and thanks to all of you for your time and input.

Happy New Year to All!

I think I will at some point. On this cue, I preferred the look and feel of the unburnished leather.
