Stalemate

13. STALEMATES
In the unlikely event that a game should become stalemated,
meaning that neither player can, or wants to, make use of ballin-hand, the balls are reracked and the same player breaks again.
• 8-Ball -Put an “X” across the entire game box. The
innings and Defensive Shots for the stalemated game do
not count.
• 9-Ball- The game ends but the points earned stand.
The innings and Defensive Shots remain and all balls left
on the table are marked as dead balls.

There is no three-foul rule in the APA, Masters nor handicapped league.

Yes, I was aware of that....I would never gamble with APA rules...
...I know it’s not used so the weaker players won’t be at the mercy of the better players...
...but if you don’t use the three foul rule, get used to long games that become draws.

I have been playing apa for almost 10 years now and have never seen the stalemate rule used. Some sucker always goes for some hail Mary break out when I just pick up the ball and hand it to him to avoid messing up a bad cluster.

I have been aware of the stalemate rule for about 5 years and I highly doubt if many around here are aware of it.

I was playing in an APA-rules 8-ball tournament four or five years ago. My opponent had the 8-ball nearly hanging in a corner pocket with several of my balls around it enough that I was going have a very hard time moving them to where they were shoot-able and he couldn't risk shooting at the 8 for fear of hitting one of my balls first. He picked the cue ball up and handed it to me so I took BIH and proceeded to shoot another of my balls up in the vicinity of that corner pocket. He handed me the cue ball again and I repeated the process with another ball. By then, I had five balls literally surrounding his 8-ball but I still had an object ball out away from that corner pocket I could beat around the table if he gave me BIH again. He pondered his next move for quite some time so I asked him if he wanted to call a stalemate and he refused. Well, he kept trying to move my balls around (giving me BIH each time) trying to develop some kind of a shot on the 8.

To make a long story even longer....well, he eventually tired of the back-and-forth and tried to finesse the cue ball into a space that was almost impossible to get through...hit one of my balls and made the 8, giving me the win (and I went on to win the match).

I hope he learned his lesson from that. Funny thing is, if he would have taken the stalemate option, it was going to be his break, giving him an advantage to win that game.

Is there a rule in APA league where there can be a stalemate between two players in their match ?

Yes, there is. It's pretty rare, but basically the players must agree that it's a stalemate.
(neither player can make use of the shot or ball in hand)
In 8 ball you wipe out all the innings and defensive shots so that game or anything that
happened in that game never happened, you cross it out on the score sheet and start
that game again. In 9 ball you count any points already made, all. the points left on the
table are dead, innings and defensive shots are counted, and you move on to the next game.
I think the same player breaks (as in the previous game) but I'll have to look that one up.

I have rarely played eight ball....and even more rarely played on a team.
....but I got talked into going to Alpena one winter.

So I got this guy 4-1 in a race to 5....the 8-ball is about an inch up the rail near a corner
pocket with one of my high balls stuck to it on an angle where the 8-ball can’t be made.
...my opponent’s low balls are all gone.....I have two other high balls on the table.

So I kept shooting a high ball to the end rail where I could go in-off the 8-ball and open the
table.....my opponent would knock the ball up table and hand me the cue ball....
...this went on for about a half an hour....ball in hand after ball in hand.

Finally, my opponent had the cue ball drop in a side pocket as he knocked my ball away....
...came over and shook my hand....said...”Nice match.”
...I said “What are you talking about?...this game is far from over.”
He said “If you sink the cue ball when you’re on the 8, you lose.”
I said “That’s ridiculous, you haven’t hit the 8-ball for a half an hour.”

I pled his case at the entry desk....was informed i won whether I liked it or not...
....lotta people were laughing when they found out what I was arguing about...:D

If we were playing the three foul rule, that half hour of scratching couldn’t happen.

Last time I saw this guy....God rest him

Your opponent was George Middleditch?

I don't know about no dam 8b, but I have played people who don't want to play 3foul and agreed to a stalemate more than a few times,

I'd guess 20+, in the 3+ years I have been playing.
