State of the AzB forums

Mike, Good post.

One problem going on right now is "time wasted." Some of us have lives and time spent here is valuable. When it is wasted by meaningless, repetitive, ego-induced threads and unwarranted personal attacks, it robs us of our most precious resource, time.

I have specific goals here and wasting time is certainly not one of them. Whatever you can do in this area is alright by me, even if it means goodbye to some.

The quality posters, of which there are many, deserve no less.

Perhaps it's time to start charging a Membership fee?

Job well done...

I have to say that AZB is by far the best Billiard Forum on the net. That said, I have noticed that there have been a lot of threads started lately with, 'what appears to me' to be an effort to stir the pot. I enjoy the exchange of ideas and opinions by fellow enthusiasts, but the flaming and hijacking of posts is not cool.

Thanks for your hard work on this forum Mike.

Yeah, because that'll just get my name right off the bill, b/c you said so. hah! No one owns me, we are friends. I don't believe that has anything to do with this board, or you really. Silly :D

And because you're the watchdog for some other bullshit forum that qualifies you to do it here? Based on the way Mawissa throws around sexual innuendos toward her girl "friends"...it goes a little beyond normal friendship.

And if you're a candidate, or are one of her "special" friends...it has a lot to do with this board.

Whether I say it or not, but found out that YOU were a moderator on here...it would be a matter of milliseconds before I'd go bye-bye from this forum. You don't even know beans about pool, or, have ever contributed one damn thing on the subject. You're actually quite worthless.
Silly? NO....RIDICULOUS!!

The only thing that's ridiculous is how you become so hostile over every little thing...take a breather, dude! You just make yourself look foolish, especially when you think you know me...you have no idea who I am. The END.

It has come to my attention recently that the forums are starting to get out of control. Users are stepping on other users and claims are being made. So I guess it is time to address these claims and bring things back under control.

A couple of users have been posting some things lately that other users would like to see these people banned for. I did ban one of them for 7 days in an effort to allow his controversy to cool down. I would like everyone to understand that the last thing I want to do is ban anyone from these forums. These forums have grown beyond what I ever thought they would and I am very proud of the broad spectrum of users on the forums. I try to make this a place that anyone can participate without the usual high school antics of name calling and crap that people like to do from the privacy of their basements.

Any time I do finally get fed up and ban someone, I get a flood of PMs either thanking me or questioning my decision. These PMs usually come from forum members that I consider friends and who I respect their opinions greatly. For me to ban someone, I usually have to see messages that are way over the line. Even then, I try to warn the person that they are getting out of control.

I have seen some questionable posts lately but not anything that I thought was bannable. On the other hand, I don't read every thread here. I read posts that interest me and posts that people send me PMs asking me to look at. On an average weekday, there are 600 posts made to the forums. I certainly don't have time to read each and every one.

On the subject of time, there have been claims recently that I am posting on my forums under a number of different aliases in order to stip up trouble. Even if I were the type of person to do something like this, I would like to know when I had the time to do so. For the past couple weeks I have been working on a major addition to the site. At the same time I have been busy with other jobs that I have.

Just to clear things up for everyone, AzB is not all that I do. (Boy, I wish) I am the webmaster for Luby Publishing. That means that I maintain the Billiards Digest site as well as the sites for the other mags they have. I also am partners in a consulting business (RMH Web Consulting) where I have my share of clients to take care of. I also run a local billiards newspaper (The Arizona Billiard News) which prints 28 pages once a month. Not to mention that I usually have 2 kids at home to deal with (haven't had them this summer though). With all of that, I am not sure when I am supposed to have the time to make up aliases and chat with myself on the forums using those aliases.

I have also heard claims from one of the regular users here (who I always considering as someone who had a good head on his shoulders and wanted to truly see the game move forward) that not only do I post this crap under different names but that he sent me a PM requesting that I ban one of the users because of a post they made. I double-checked my PMs and have not heard from this user in well over a month. So if he thinks he PMed me, he didn't. What is interesting though, is that this user got mad at me a few months ago because I banned someone he didn't think deserved to be banned. Now I guess he is not posting here because I didn't ban someone he thinks deserves to be banned.

As for what to do about this whole situation, I guess I need to "Put the I back into moderator" and start cleaning out some of the crap here. I really didn't want to have to start monitoring everything and hoped that we could all behave as adults. I guess every once in a while this sort of thing has to happen though.

I am also going to invite certain users to be part of a committee that will be in charge of deciding when and if someone needs to be banned. Please don't PM me asking to be part of the committee. I will send out notes to the people who I think should be part of it.

Very nice post Mike, I can say I had noticed the same lately regarding a little downward spiral but that withstanding, I still check AZ and AZ Forums several times a day, even on my phone when away from my computer (which is rare but fun!)

Keep up the good work.

I think this post bears repeating on this thread...

The really sad part about this aside from the obvious is that there's a few teenagers on here and I've yet to see them conduct themselves in a manner less than adult.

This is so true. I offer Tanner Pruess and Muxy as two teens who are very much a credit to this forum.

I think the "add to reputation" button is a good idea but, can anyone teach me how to use it and what's it for, exactly? is it even being used? same goes to the "report bad post" button.....

I have to say something. :)

Even though I'm very new in this board/forum, this I find to be the most informative and the most hilarious and always cracks me up everyday.

I've been to many boards since BBS times, IRC, etc and have seen pretty ugly stuff thrown left, right and center and would sometimes partake in one.

But now, I've grown older and hopefully wiser and practice both selectivity and ignorance. I select the ones that I will respond to and ignore the rest.

Mike keep up the good work. I support you.

Seems like the best way to stay out of the banned for life category is not to bash any of the sponsors that help pay the bills. Besides that, any name calling, over use of profanity, sexual comments that 12 year olds can read, and liable from one member to another goes.

Well, you got the last ones correct. The first one should be "not to keep on working something over and over and over". Kind of like what you are doing.

As long as you're on here posting, which you've NEVER really done before to any extent but suddenly are, the END never comes. I really don't give a rats ass who you are nor care to find out, but I at least know who one of your friends is and that's enough...you know the old saying of "birds of a feather flocking together", don't you. Knowing that you're a young loud mouth POS that can't play pool is enough for me to know. (now I'm chilled out...how about you, you feeling better now?)

For all those just tuning in to AZ for the first time...the above post is an example of what this thread is talking about and the troublemakers who start them. Stay tuned for later developments.....and have fun while you're at it.

I think you failed at that. This is a pretty good site, but I definitely see shades of high school here (god, was I ever that young?). I'm sure PM's have a life of their own we don't see, like passing notes in high school. "Oh did you see what so-and-so said? What a jerk.", etc., etc. Cliques form too just like high school. Nothing you can do about it Mike, that's the way of life.
I find ccb to have the same atmosphere. RSB BL (Before Larry) on the other hand was more like a barroom, friendly discussion back and forth with some occassional woofing and ribbing until suddenly a donnybrook breaks out, but there are no cops to come break it up. Post Fast Larry, RSB has turned into a piece of crap and it is a very sad thing because frankly I prefer the free-form, politically incorrect atmosphere of RSB BL. FL is clearly a nut job and there is no provision to throw him out.
You do a good job Mike, but a website will still never be anything more than a website.

The downside of something like RSB (besides what Larry has done to it) is that you very seldom get participation from certain groups. I remember when Bill Stephen first tried RSB. That experience turned him off on the net as a whole.

Hear, hear! Although I'm not a very big RSB fan, I am saddened to see it in such a state, the repetition of nonsensical posting for the sole benefit of -- WHAT?

The NewsGroup has been in existence for some time, and based on what I have read in the past, there is/was a strong base of regulars who enjoy the comradery of a few kindred souls with much in common.

Although it hasn't been updated in a long while, here's a link to the "good old days" of RSB NG, complete with a Rogues Gallery: http://www.playpool.com/rsbasp/rsbrogue/rogues.htm

Ironically, if you click on the Return to Playpool.com Button at the top, you will soon be greeted with a message from its webmaster: Due to the inappropriate messages, the message board has been removed from the site. I will look into getting a new board that requires a login.

Whatever happened to Playpool.com, it seems RSB has endured the same. There's your unmoderated forum.

One thing that Larry has done with his take-over of RSB is drive some of the regulars over here. Can't complain too much about that.
