Stolen Cues Via Scott Frost

I hate to say this but, no, it may never show up. My Palmer Model "M"
with My Name in the clear window was stolen in 1981 and is yet to
surface. I placed a $1000.00 reward on it back then, which was three
times it's value and still no response. Vanished into thin air ... Poof !
We will watch for the Ed Young here on the West Coast, just in case it
grows legs.

Yep. My cue has been in the mens room of every pool hall I've been in. It never leaves my sight. I laid my cue down on the empty table next to me so I could break with a house cue and in the time it took me to break three young guys on another table had picked up my cue and were looking at it. They clearly had been watching the cue while I was playing. They had no idea what the cue was (Woodworth) except it wasn't a house cue.

I lost a high end Joss back in 1989, stolen out of the trunk of my car after I broke down on the road and walked a mile to a payphone. By the time I got back to the car, it was stripped. It never occurred to me to empty the car out (especially my cue). $1100 lesson was learned that dark morning. Very recognizable cue and the case was a clamshell with a hand painted bed of roses on it...very distinctive. I got calls from pool rooms and bars all over that part of the state for a month, and would narrowly miss catching the guy (who stayed in the area and actually used the cue, vice pawning it). Checked every pawn shop in a 100 miles for months, no dice. Cops laughed me out of the squad room, even though I had photos and the Joss certificate of authenticity (still have it). It sucks, but sometimes life kicks you just hard enough to learn.

My cue stays in my hand or within arms reach at ALL times. Bathroom, smoke breaks, standing in line at the bar, everywhere. There was no Internet back then, here's hoping the young man finds his cue...and the scumbag who pinched it gets his.

Excuse my ignorance but was he playing in the event last weekend?

Scott mentioned it on one of the streamed matches he was commentating on.

I think he said Anthony was playing in the 10Ball, but I'm not positive.
He did say he threw the cue/case under a table, and threw his jacket on it, left for a couple hours, and when he came back it was gone.

Now, I'm not making any excuses for the guy, and I'm sorry this happened, but WTF?

Scott says he paid over 3K for the cue, and he left it under a table, and left the room?

I know the feeling. Back in the 1980's in L.A., I had worked all night in my office catching up . I went out to the street in the early morning hours to go home. My new Corvette was gone and all that was there was broken glass. I looked at the empty spot and all I could think about was my Ginacue, which never showed up again. It had the initials COYT on the butt. I still miss that cue, loved it. My buddy, who had one just like it, still plays with his to this day.

I hope the OP does find it - the reward should help. That's a pretty cue and easy to spot.

Thinking about it, probably theft of opportunity. All cues are worth something, the thief got lucky if he knows what it is.

Thanks, at some point Scott mentioned that they had roped off the playing area wonder if this had anything to do with it? If so kind a late.

Closing the barn door after the horses got out here. But at the Chinook Winds tourneys, players can check the cues and cases behind the front desk.

This would be a nice feature for all tourneys to adapt. Could it be arranged by tournament directors?

This really sucks! I feel your pain, Anthony. I tried to buy this cue last week but was told that it was already promised to a buyer who would meet at the Expo. Sold a similar Ed Young cue recently to someone who was the original owner who was waiting for years for his old cue to resurface. Don't worry, it will resurface and be recognized as a stolen cue. Lesson for all of us: if you have to leave your cue at the table, ask a friend to keep an eye on it.

I do NOT recommend asking anyone, friend or not to watch my cue or anything I value. How would you deal with it if it got stolen while your friend was watching it? I can just imagine the suspicion and bad feelings that could come from that. Be responsible for your own property don't expect anyone else to care for it or it could come back to bite you bad. My cue is with me at my side in the men's room at the bar everywhere. I could care less what anyone else thinks about that. I even take it into bars that have no tables rather than leave it in the car. I did just that recently when I stopped to have a couple beers on my way home from leagues. CYA don't expect others to! Thieves suck.....

I agree. Take it with you.

Yes especially dont ask an old man. I was asked quite a few times and at least 2 times by the time they came back it had totally slipped my mind that i was guarding it. It was there both times thankfully. Now i tell them if they are not back in 5 minutes they cant count on me.

LOL that is funny and true at the same time. Thieves work in many ways and one is distraction. Leagues and tournaments create a great environment for that. Lots of folks milling around, just makes it easier for the thieves to do what they do. The advent of cell phones has enabled thieves to work even more efficiently as well. One guy can distract you while his buddy grabs the cue or one texts the other his description of you to his accomplice outside. It all comes down to situational awareness. Remember they have the upper hand once they start to set you up, you don't know what is going on and they do. They are just waiting for the perfect moment to spring the trap. I just feel it's better to be over protective and not make a friend responsible for watching your cues. It can lead to the loss of a cue and a friend creating an even worse scenario than losing your cue.

I approached the Forum about the idea of a new sub-forum in the for sale section that already has two sub-forums......Wanted & eBay Auctions. The new sub-forum would be for stolen cue(s) alerts.......if you have your cue stolen, you can start a thread in this new section right away. Hopefully, this will evolve into a comprehensive data base but in any event, if people, pawn shops, etc. become familiar with this new section, it can be checked before pawning a cue or buying a cue. Even at the cue shows, people can jump on their smart phones and check the Az section to make sure the cue they're considering hasn't been reported as stolen.

Right now there's a collage of threads being posted on the Forum alerting others to stolen cues and the problem is people don't know where to post.....Main Forum, For Sale, Cue Gallery, etc. So if there's a sub-forum dedicated to only stolen cues, that should become the first place to check and over time people will learn this could become a good thing.

Anyway, The AzHousepro is open to doing something like this and has asked everyone that has posted a stolen cue thread to let him know the date of their post and what section it was posted. Contact the house pro and he will get something started which will centralize this information in a new sub-forum.......Stolen Pool Cues.

This could ultimately develop into a database for stolen cues and pawn shops could check this sub-forum to make sure that cues they loan money on aren't stolen pool cues. I have no skin in this game but if I lost one of my cues, I'd feel better being able to take advantage of this new sub-forum to let others know I could use their help on recovering my stolen pool cue.

i sent you a greenie for taking the effort to try and start a stolen cue sub forum..
i would suggest that stolen cues still be placed in the main forum for a greater initial exposure while also going in the stolen cue forum

There is also a Stolen Cues sticky thread in the For Sale forum, but that doesn't get the same traffic anymore.

bbb...........I'm fortunate to have never experienced the theft or loss of a pool cue. I can't imagine the horror of realizing that your cue is missing and then having to endure the angst & agony of recalling what happened. I hope the Forum captures this data so that a search can be done within that new sub-section by cue-maker name. Everyone knows what the cue-maker is for their cue that was stolen so just make it a point to start new stolen threads with a cue-maker name. This way if you were thinking of buying a Joss West cue like the one stolen in Denver, you just search this new sub-forum using cue-maker search as a option. Thanks for the greenie.
