Straight Pool Cue

Well, maybe not exactly but since this sub forum is where I hang out, I thought you guys might not mind if I posted this here.

At our Illinois Billiards Club, where Jim Parker has been running straight pool leagues for something like 36 years, we are having a three cushion tournament this weekend with some pretty good players including George Ashby and Hugo Patino.

A local cue maker, Noel Mendoza, has donated a cue, proceeds to go to the prize fund. For those of you who don’t know, Noel worked with Ray Schuler for many years and is carrying on the Schuler tradition. http://www.mendozacues.com/index.html. Noel Mendoza makes Schuler jointed cues. According to Dennis Dieckmann, he is the only guy around who can make them. I've been using one for the last few months and it has a nice solid hit.
When Ray Schuler was making them, he designed one of his shafts for straight pool-shorter, thicker. I would think more for the old style bump and bunt type of straight pool.

Anyway, raffle tickets are $5 apiece and 3 tickets for $12.

If anyone wants to buy a ticket, they can paypal me the money with paypal fees: $5.46 for one; $12.67 for three and I will fill out your name, address, etc. and enter your name in the raffle. I am going to be helping run the raffle.

The cue comes with a carom shaft but if a pool player wins, Noel will substitute a pool shaft.

my paypal is gwtlaw@aol.com. The raffle is Sunday, the final day of the tournament. If paypal is not available to you or you prefer another method, feel free to contact me.

Thanks for indulging me and sorry for taking up 14.1 space.

Hey Dennis, how are ya buddy? :)

I just got a brand new custom cue arrive in the mail yesterday and it's funny about how you describe the pool shaft that was suited for straight pool because the shafts on the new cue have got a very similar kind of taper to them :)

The best way to describe it is a 3C "barrel" taper, but on a slightly longer shaft with a 13mm tip, compared to the slimmer pro taper shafts that are more flexible, (Whippier).

I've not hit a ball with this cue yet, but you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be shooting some straight pool with the cue stick tomorrow, since shooting straight pool is a better way to help become aquainted with how the cue feels and plays when shooting.

I would like to wish you the very best of luck with the tournament and the raffle and good luck to all the competitors and raffle entrants

Shafts

Hey, Willie. How's it going?

The Schuler shafts, which all fit on all Schuler cues were quite varied.

Schuler Shafts: The ultimate in selection

Super X (29 in. x 13 mm) A shaft specifically designed to be forgiving in play. Shaft is flexible, and yields a soft hit.
Hit classification: soft.

Super Pro (29 in. x 13 mm) Gives a softer hit and maximum comfort through the fingers due to the insignificant growth of the shaft in a long stroking area. This shaft is more flexible than our Pro shafts, and produces a "softer" hit.
Hit classification: medium-soft.

Professional (29 in. x 13 mm) Our original "Pro" taper. Designed along the lines of the early "masters" such as Herman Rambow, Harvey Martin and George Balabushka. Minor taper in the stroking area allows for comfort while still providing some "spine".
Hit classification: medium-firm.

Schuler Pro (28.5 in. x 12.75 mm) Similar to the Professional™, but has increased diameter in the back half of the shaft. This combination forces the flex point further forward, giving a firmer hit. Very good for improving cue ball control.
Hit classification: firm.

American (28 in. x 12.5 mm) Back half of shaft is similar to the European™, with the front half of the shaft similar to the Professional™. This configuration produces a firm shaft with exceptional characteristics for control games, such straight pool, one-pocket, and 9-ball.
Hit classification: very firm.

European (27.5 in. x 12 mm) Also called Ceulemans' Taper. Grows quickly from the ferrule, with even faster growth at the midsection of the shaft. Provides maximum "spine" while giving some relief for the fingers. Excellent control, power, consistency.
Hit classification: stiff/very stiff.

Constant (27.5 in. x 12 mm) Tapers constantly (wedge shape) from the ferrule to the joint. Hit is similar to European.
Hit classification: stiff/very stiff.

Super Constant (27.5 in. x 12mm) Elliptical arcs combine to produce this powerhouse.
Hit classification: stiff/very stiff.

In fact, I found another link where even more varieties were sold:'

This may be of historical interest only, but I bet Noel could make whichever one someone wanted.

I'll take one. I can always use another straight pool cue.

Me too -- I could always use another straight pool cue. On that note, does he also make pool shoes? :D

J/K. It's a gorgeous cue -- looks like a nice blend of Amboyna Burl with curly maple -- or something along those lines.

Payment sent!

Is it a straight pool cue or a straight-pool cue? Not necessarily the same!

personally i like wood joint cues for 14.1. the shaft i have now is wood-joint, 12mm but too thin. it has very low deflection however.

i just ordered a Players Cue, 13mm, cocobolo, Sneaky Pete, wood joint, from ozone. i can't wait to try it out. for fifty bucks you can't beat it. PM me for the ozone billiards discount code. ;) http://www.ozonebilliards.com/plcuesnpecow.html

Whatever.

Here are a couple of his cues without that sweet brick background.

i want the 7th one over from the left !!!!

i will take 3 raffles if i could have a chance at that one !!

IMHO when you've seen one fancy cue, you've seen them all. like women and sex; the feel of the shaft is more important than a nice butt.

That's a nice sentiment and I suppose buying a cheap cue is very sensible.

But....

What does that have to do with me trying to help raise some money for the three cushion players?

it brought the thread back to the top where more people will see it. sausage works in mysterious ways....

but what does raising money for three cushion players (who everyone knows are out of their fricking minds) have to do with 14.1?

Ok, ok, you did bring it back so I guess that is good.

As i mentioned in the opening post (which was too long for Marop to read), our straight pool club also has billiards stuff going on which we try to help support since it helps keep the club open for us, so I thought my homies here would understand.

Later, Gator.:D

furthermore; many people don't know it but the only reason billiards exists is because of a pool table assembly gone terribly wrong.

Yes, that is correct. Here's an excerpt from a recent pocketless pool tournament, with commentary from Chris Cohen:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=SvYeqLg4dQU

"You just wonder if there's just one pocket available on this table, he may, MAY, be able to reduce the number of balls in front of him."

I like the telestrator ("commentator's pencil") descriptions of each shot, and how each contact point on the cushions "failed to find a pocket."

:p

WTF?

Great stuff.

I'll send it to some 3 cushion fellows I know.

Raffle goes off today around the finals. 6:00 p.m.

I'm leaving the house by 11, so if someone wants a chance for the cue let me know.

We have about $300 generated by the raffle so far.The players who are there today already bought their raffle tickets yesterday so I would imagine the total amount of chances out there won't get much higher.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

AZ people only bought about $30 something worth of tickets out of $469.00 for the raffle and we won it.

A big congratulations to our own sfleinen. :D

That cue has found a wonderful home!

(Apologies for the belated reply to this one -- work issues and what-not got in the way.)

Talk about a slim chance to win -- only $30 worth of AZB'er-purchased raffle tickets out of $469 total (approximately 6%), and "we" won it!

Woo hoo! Can't wait to see and play with this cue!

Thanks so much for bringing this opportunity to the 14.1 forum, Dennis! I promise you that cue has found a nice home, and I'm certain I'll enjoy playing with it for years to come!
