Strange commentary?

Hi this is my first post, and im an avid pool player, and the occasional snooker player. But the reason I registered today was mainly to ask a question about some commentary that i'm hearing in a video with corey deuel.

So first watch this video, its just corey running a nine ball rack. (rumor has is he misses the nine.) but listen to the commentary.

Both of these videos, its clearly the same rack, AND its the same commentators, clearly jimmy wych and billy incardona, BUT the commentary is different. not only that, they talk like its either LIVE, or it's thier first time viewing this tape in both instances. It seems like the commentary is live in both cases, because jim is making references to the crowd in both cases, but obvisouly that isnt the case.

Help me solve this mystery! Its been bugging me for ages.
 
The only thing that i can think of is that one is the original commentary and because they new that they were going to sell a lot of this match because of that draw shot they redid the commentary to be even better so they might even sell more from word of mouth. Other wise I have no clue.

edit: I watched them both a few more times and i think that the first one is the redo because they made it much more exciting that time with better commentary on the draw shot but it's only a guess.

Commentary is often re-done. I know the commentary that you see on tv is done after the match, with them pretending to watch it live-- but they've already seen the match.

that's amazing... cause on ESPN they still get a lot of it wrong LOL
 
I think the first video has the genuine original commentary. In terms of percentage Corey's draw shot was wrong, because it looked like he could get position using top with right spin. Initially Billy didn't agree with the shot infact you can hear "Why" but then he realized Corey made an incredible shot. Probably because the match was on ESPN the broadcaster asked for a more exciting commentary, infact you can see Jim Wych celebrating the fluke on the three and a generally more animated commentary
 
I think the first one is genuine. They were very excited because it was a very exciting shot. "Only a handful of people in the world could make that shot" rings true to me. The second one seems very contrived to me.

For what it's worth, I think Jim Wych is a very good announcer. He seems to get a little guff for some reason. I'm not saying he is any better or as loved as others, I just think he is a good announcer.

Thanks for all the replies! I wish this wasnt the case, they really should do the commentary live and stick with it. I mean, how boring and stiff would it be to try to sound exited about something that was predetermined.

Interesting, also a little puzzling.

Let me see if I get this correct. When I'm watching a live sports event, say tennis, the commentary I'm listening to was done after the event and then inserted into the live event. Truly amazing technology, amazing. :wink:

If your right, why would they do it over, made it worse, and then still use it?

Sorry but that just doesn't made sense to me, I have to still think that the second one was the original, and it wasn't exciting enough, there for they redid it, more exciting, and when it came out better they used that one.

Edit: I watched them both several more times and the second one has the ESPN stream thing running along the bottom, which makes me think even more so, that the first one is the redo, because now I'm thinking that for some kind of legal reason they couldn't use the commentary from the one with the ESPN streamer at the bottom.

Strange Commentary

Ahh... that seems like only yesterday.... a truly great match.

And now on to the answer....

The FIRST video you listed WAS the LIVE production of the Corey match and that is the commentary on our DVD's.

Back in the day, Accu-Stats associated with Billiard Club Network for all of our TV work.

Something happened in the BCN post-production process for the ESPN showing and Rob Sykora flew Billy and Jim Wych in to redo the comentary.

It's just that simple.

He said they're pretending to watch it live (i.e., they're pretending that the match is taking place while they're actually doing the commentary, but in fact it has already taken place), so no, he's talking about when you're watching an event that is not live.
