Stupid Mosconi cup question

I think i know the answer but I'll embarrass my self anyway. Every year in the Mosconi cup there is a new member on the American team. I always assume that the US open champ earned that spot. So Last year was SVB, the year before was it was our boy John Schmidt, and so on and so forth. So what happens when the Americans didn't have a 1st place finish in the US open. Do we just choose whomever took the highest spot?

I am not sure if "we" do the choosing. Rather, it may be the sponsor of the Mosconi Cup who gathers all the data from the authoritative bodies of pool, and then I think -- and I may be wrong -- it is the sponsor of Mosconi Cup that makes the ultimate selection of who will be on each team.

I don't know. That's a good question.

If I had my druthers, the spot would be reserved for the last American winner of the US Open.
 
Well, thats one aspect. Another is I think that a few members remain on the team for marketability to keep or increase US interest in the match. I know Earl and Rodney have produced for the team over the years and I enjoy watching them play, but I feel that a specific system should be established to ensure the best players are on the team every year. This would also decrease, in theory, the debate on who should be on the team. JMO.

You've got it basically correct. They actually chose both entire teams. No one is "guaranteed" a spot.
 
Well maybe i was wrong about how they pick the 6th player because Gabe Owen won the 2005 US Open (did he not) and he never made that year; it was Shawn Putnam.

The mystery goes on.
