Suddenly its the 60s today

Contrast between those days and these forme

In 1968 I was in New York city working in the financial
districk. On night another guy and myself were invited out to poker

I won so much money I couldn't get it all in my front 2 pockets

john guidi and i could hardly stand up ,we took the subway about 4 AM.it was just us 2
but we stood rather than sit so we wouldn't have to get up

suddenly two Puerto Ricans come through the car and sit looking at us,swish swish two pocket knife switch blades are pulled, not a word is said but they begin cleaning their fingernails while leering at us

As the car pulls into a station I reached into my pocket and pulled ouy a hugh wad of cash, these punks were flabergasted, when the subway stopped they got up and ran out the door

Guidi reaches over picks me up and threatens to strangle me"what are you, crazy?" he says

"Well they sure thought so"

Guidi put me down and kissed my cheek( man hug not gay)

Guidi was 300 pounds of walk on and make the St Louis cardinal NFL team,
so I had a back up plan.

In those days i could run fast

Just to show I was not always a chicken, that came later

My wife loves adventure stories so she coaxed this out of me,she loves to hear these but after yesterdays she said"you are not allowed to go to that cheap ole pool room"
I started to explain how I wear the pants in this family but she put her finger in my face and said, don't go there"

so I said demurely "OK"

My favorite story today....maybe the month....:thumbup2:

Dean,

Remember when Savanna Red was running out the front door of the Cotton Palace with his angry wife right behind him?

She had one High Heal on and was beating Reds' head with the other.

He had just lost their bankroll.

The good old days.

Talked with one of the other players hiding in the closet @ CK Billiards during the shooting. Said the Dallas PD found 37 shell casing in the parking lot and suspected the shooting occurred over a bad drug transaction. No persons injured but several cars, including his, had bullet holes.

37 shell castings

i knew that there was a lot of shooting, but the view from
the closet didn't provide me with the best angle

i hope you guys aren't too disappointed in me

my wife said i did the right thing
but she still barred me from going back

that and the cheap pool combined to convince me it
is time to hang em up

i could tell you guys a story from the 60s involving high stakes poker and the love field air port,
Tex Watson (remember Charles Manson) and my first real job which was only a coover to get in the poker game

aside from a phony bomb threat and the FBI ordering me back into the plane where the bomb was, when
I was making $5 pr hour and me explaining that Deano doesn't get blown up for $5 pr hour and how I ended up
winning over $200,000 playing 9 ball the story is not all that interesting

Well its good to see that my story was verified by witnesses,I wouldn't want you guys to
question my memory

I would like to team up with Billy and Jack and play all comers, assuming we could match up
perhaps post and freeze a couple of 100 g notes

then again i might not have any heart left, you should have seen me shaking in that closet
Jack tells the story of the "Creeper,Stanley Cook", a big time hit man in the Dallas underworld
who used to hang around the pool room

Seems Stanley had a dispute with Billy over a sizable cash amount and threaten to shoot Billy

Jack says Billy kept the money and defended his play with words
Now I wouldn't recommend this for you guys at home, but it worked for Billy

San Jose Dick could tell you that Creeper,RD and Charlie Boyd were about as bad as
they get,ran Afie and his brother out of town, but not Ole Billy

things have truly slowed down these days

You better save some stories for your book. I know there wont be any pictures to confuse the readers:grin-square:

Dean,

True story.

My mantra in those days was "Get the Money and keep it."

Dean,

When you mentioned Charlie Boyd you reminded me of Vernon Litton. A self declared tough guy.

He was staking John Henderson to play me some 9 ball. I was giving John the 5 up and was just robbing him.

Vernon got so mad that he wanted to beat me up and had me over the table but I reminded him my sister was a U.S Attorney and he thought twice.

Ah the spoken word.

Whatever happened to Vernon?

There was another player fro Oak Cliff ( a lefty with dark hair) I was giving him the 7 and ran 12 racks on the first table to the left of the entrance. Made the 9 on the break a couple of times.

There is a older thread on One Pocket forum with a possible pic and info.

hi Billy

Vernon passed away not too long ago

Red fisher was the only left handed Oak cliff boy

I had some exciting adventures with vernon, one time he wanted half my action in a quickly set up poker game

it was the 60s and a few thousand dollars was a lot more than it is today

I got several thou ahead and vernon ran in a couple of the tough guys,my winning went down to about $3000 so I quit

I met Vernon
"how did we do?

I said there was no we,you weren't happy until you ran in that group of ringers

"Aw Dean"

Thats not right etc

I said"you were not right"

Aw shucks, little boy act with hands in the cookie jar look,
not all that common for Vernon

So I gave him a lecture ,fined him for the infraction of etiquette

Gave him $1000 and took $2000 for myself

"consider yourself lucky, and if you ever want a piece of my action again blah blah blah

He was happy

I was happy he was happy

After that I got Titanic Thompsons Balabushka from Vernon and Jack Strouds balabushka

We became friends, had many the heart to heart talks over dinner

I got to see a side of Vernon that not everyone knew

To tell the truth, tears came to my eyes when I heard he was dying

Jack was dark headed and lefty, but I did not realize he was from oak cliff
like Jack potter ,Tommy bBanton, and I were"

I could tell you a funny Tommy Blanton story about a fight with the toughest guy from a rival high school

It would knock your socks off,Little Tommy Blanton was one tough character and so very very funny

Dean

I don't remember if you were still around in the Titanic Thompson era

I was out with Ty,I was 18 and naive but still a bit of a gamer

Ty and I returned from a golfing trip,i was the caddy until a guy asked Ty for a stroke a hole
Ty says my caddy could beat you with a stroke a hole

I was wearing short pants with white socks and my job was to act or look stupid. I did.It came naturally

At any rate after a few days of close action the bet was raised and I won, then we adjusted
to where I had to play one handed and got 2 strokes per hole

At the time I was shooting in the high 70s with one hand on short courses so
i had a mortal lock.Typical Titanic

We get back to the cotton palace,Billy T is playing Vernon one pocket,Titanic gives me his bankroll and says bet it all on Billy t

I did.We lost every game,Titanic called me on the house phone,"how are we doing?"

Losing

Who are you betting with?

Vernon

Silence

Ty runs into the room up to Vernon and pointing at me says,"thats my money that dern fool is betting"

Vernon returned Ty's money and I was branded an idiot for the rest of my life

Dean,

I was there when Ty was. We spent a lot of time together. Learned a lot from him.

Sat next to him in some of the poker games at his apartment.
Guns were everywhere. Front door, back door, both sides of the table.

He still did his thing.

He had nerves of steel.

Billy remember Harold Coffee

There was this guy in Waxahachie (A small town a few miles from Dallas) who was a local champion. In the pool room he played in, he was thought to be unbeatable, and everyone in town would bet on him. He played ring games spotting everyone in the game the six and out. Billy, Alf Taylor and I went to his place. The plan was, since he knew Alf, Billy was just the stakehorse. Alf told him he needed some weight while Billy was saying “yeah ,like the 7 and 8.” Well old Harold says no way, but I will give the stakehorse the 7 and 8. Talk about going from the frying pan into the fire. The place is jammed, and Alf and I are betting every rail bird in the house. We never lose a game with Billy lucking in the 7, 8, or 9. Harold never asked to change the game and never knew who he was playing. He came in the Cotton Bowling Palace a few months later after Billy had left town. He wouldn’t play anyone in the place, only wanted to play that rich stakehorse again. “He got lucky on me last time.”
Fun times,
Jack
