Suggestion for Moscou Cup Captain

I like Mark Wilson. I think his approach this year is going to yield some very positive results.

I like the guy (Mark Wilson) that was already chosen as captain for this
years Mosconi Cup Team.

I think Nick Varner would be a great choice to Captain the USA team at the Mosconi Cup. What do you think?

He was already captain a few years back. Something needs to change. We might as well bring back the Korean Dragon to captain Team USA. I think Tony Robles would be a great choice to be captain of team USA.

I think the current captain has more passion than anyone in the past, by far. Mark has taken a serious vested interest and commitment to making team USA as successful as possible. I can't think of a better choice than Mark.

Captain of Mosconi Cup is not the problem anymore than US Captain of Ryder cup is the problem. over the last several events there are several similar issues and facts regarding both. You don't magically fix both teams by a certain Captain. It is Character ( behavior , attitude, selfishness ) Chemistry ( guys that don't particularly like each other and cant even be paired with each other ) you could blind draw every match on European Ryder cup and Mosconi Cup and not have a problem. They aren't all best buddies but they know how and more importantly are willing to bury the hatchet and slam a few pints and drinks for the week to accomplish their goal .There are Americans pool and golfers who don't do the same and further more the Captains are reluctant to pair them together and in some cases would not dare to. In addition on both European Teams the additional fact is they have gotten better and deeper. It could change but not by the magic of a Captain only with willingness to correct the issues within the team members

Would you then say that a football coach has no influence on his players?

I could be wrong, but having played on teams for more than 70 seasons, and won over 50 league team titles and two state championships, my opinion is that a good team captain is very important to a team's success.

Once again as so typical on AZ Forum you are not addressing my post. I was comparing
Mosconi Cup and Ryder Cup . In Football and basketball the coach tells you what to run and many times who to hand off to , who to throw to and many other issues.
He also has the ability to discipline and many other controllable issues. Because of the authority and decision making it is a whole different subject . CONGRATES on you record but I am sure you yanked a few players and as well kicked a few bad attitude players off the field and off the team. Can't happen in Mosconi Cup. I stand by my post and agree with you on football, basketball and some others.

The Europeans as a whole are more competitive and have more passion than the Americans. So until they get that changed it doesn't matter who the Captain of the Mosconi Cup will be.

As for the Captain of the Moscou Cup...I have no ideal.

I think you've spotted the exact reason Mark started with 8 and will cut down to 5 at the end. Past coaches had no stick to use on the players. Mark does.

Mark Wilson was the best choice to Captain the team and I hope he continues to do so.

I agree, let's give him a chance and see what happens. It couldn't be any worse than last year. Just like the Ryder Cup, I like the idea of bringing in some young blood to the fray. I like the choices Mark has made so far.

I think Nick Varner would be a great choice to Captain the USA team at the Mosconi Cup. What do you think?

Nick has already been the Captain 4 times, with 2 wins (including the last USA win in 2009) and 2 losses.

But I'm pleased to have Mark Wilson in that role now. Absent any unexpected developments, I hope he has a multi-year run.

Sure, Nice Varner would undoubtedly make a great choice to captain the U.S.A Team.
However, as you probably know, Mr. Wilson is the captain this year.
I like Mr. Wilson's unorthodox approach to preparing the players for the competition.

(My musings) Whether it leads to a U.S. victory is a moot point.
Hopefully, everyone realizes this year's goal is ONLY that the team give 100% effort and professionalism.
Anything beyond that is gravy. To expect anything more is quixotic, IMO.

Before I knew of Mark Wilson's "format" of selecting 8 players only and then closing everyone else out, I also liked him as the captain.
But in my opinion you have to wait and see how players are playing during the year in major 9 ball tournaments.
And then select the players.

That would be like the Ryder cup captain selecting his two captains picks before the last two fedex cup tournaments were done.
Oh wait, that did happen, hence no Billy Horschel the hottest USA player going into the Ryder cup.

But i'm not sure if that was a rule and Tom Watson had no choice but to pick early.

You could have a series of Mosconi Cup 9 ball qualifying tournaments with the top 5 players at the end of the series of tournaments making the team.
Or top 4 and a captains selection.

Mark Wilson is an ideal choice for captain.

Mark is highly respected as a player, as an instructor and as a role model in sportsmanship. He also was a member of a winning American Mosconi Cup team. The only other guy I can think of who has never coached Team USA and has all of these credentials is Tony Robles, and, if there's any justice, Tony's turn will come soon enough.

Nick Varner has already been a captain and, in my view, we should go with worthy candidates who've yet to have the chance.

Still, let's be realistic. If it wishes to, Europe can go to bat with a lineup of five World 9-ball champions, including the last three, in Feijen, Hohmann, Appleton, Immonen and Souquet. If they do, the Mosconi Cup won't come down to coaching. Team USA's best hope is that Europe shows up with a lot less than that.

Whatever team Europe shows up with, however, Team USA is in good hands with Mark Wilson, one of the shining presences in American pool.

Stu...Ditto to everything you said!

Mark Wilson is the Captain. End of story.

What I would love to see is to have a Mosconi Cup warm-up here in the States where the 8 candidates compete against each other in the Mosconi Cup format but with 4 on each team. Stream it so we can all see how the players are doing and have a chance to watch the players representing US Pool. I think it would be interesting. However, might be hard to do due to logistics.
