Super billiards expo adding a Fargo limit for the amateur?

I think pro level starts about 710. That puts someone in the top 100 USA list
Not saying you are wrong, as what pro speed means is definitely a matter of opinion.

That said, if all the Filipinos and Europeans Fargo rates were included, 710 probably doesn't put you among the world's 300 best players.

Nowadays there's very few secrets in who plays well.

The guys winning sbe amateur open are by no means pros. Great players sure, but they are not even entry level pros.

When they win, Alan bans them from future amateur play, which is all that can be done.

Wait, so if you happen to win the event, you can't play in it again?

Pretty much what I've heard from multiple winners.

I think it's fair.

Over the last 15 years there's been about 20 guys who are real contenders....in race to 5 alternating break on a barbox it's still a crap shoot...even playing best out of 3 sets.

Starting to get excited....only 5 days to go. I'm even practicing a little.

710 is a broke pro with a day job, or lives at his mom's. He hasn't won anything major.

Doesn't matter what it is....only 3 guys are ever supposed to win. With the way Fedor is playibg...it's even worse.

I believe the winner has always been allowed to defend his title

There’s probably 500 golf club pros around the country. They’ll never win a tournament, yet they’re considered pros.

Point well taken.

I didn't mean teaching pros who sometimes compete, I mean those who regularly compete at the top level. I have always considered the regular instructors of any sport to be pros whether they compete or not.

I'll bet there are over 10,000 golf pros in the country.

You might be right about the golf pros🤣
Ike Runnels FargoRate is 708, I consider him a pro. Probably more in 1P than rotation.

That’s definitely not true.. Not every winner has been banned but they don’t automatically defend their title. Cory duel being one example.

Because of the knowledge they have of the game. You may have all the knowledge but the ability to play at a high level with all the pressure on is a different animal. Just like not all pro players can be good teachers.. It’s just different I Guess.

Those club pros you speak of are called Golf Professionals.
Professional golfers are the ones who compete on the Tour fyi.
The difference between the two is huge....

Right. But some similarities. The best of the club pros are really close. Like the guys who qualify for the PGA Championship by winning the Club Pro Championship. Some make the cut once in a while at the PGA right? And I think the guy - who’s name I forget- who was the club pro at a Trump course made it on Tour. Didn’t he win one? Most of the club pros are very good players who can’t possibly make it on tour. But we’re talking college players etc... The playing ability test they have to pass Isn’t hard for good players like a solid D-1 golfer probably, but it does set a minimum. I remember a club pro I knew about talking about his D-1 college career then making it through Q-School. Excellent player. Couldn’t make it on Tour. So to bring it back to pool, that guy can’t go enter an amateur tournament. Does it limit playing opportunities? Maybe. But the PGA Sections put on some tournaments. (I am ignoring getting am status back and blurring the lines with college NIL etc...)

Where golf and other sports have it over pool is in the coaching ranks. A club pro needs all kinds of skills from selling equipment to teaching. Some are better teachers than others just like some are better players. But it keeps someone in the industry with an interest in supporting the sport because he can make a living in it. He can do it because of a healthy amateur sport. A good football player can maybe go into coaching. A smart guy who couldn’t play D-1 or pro football might make an excellent coach. And there might be a high school or college that can pay them. Some room owners might be like this.

I personally think the trend to treat pool more like other sports is good. Pool instructors are becoming more common and better. For them to do well amateur pool needs to be healthy. So maybe a 720 FargoRate who can teach can make some money in the game. That is good for the game pro and am.

I didn’t say automatically. What year did Corey win the open amateur?

The thing is in Golf there is a real Pro tournament with qualifications and standings, etc.. In pool "pro" is as much a skill level designation as anything else. For an amateur, they are super impressed with a B player who can run out a rack a few times a week. For a Pro, you need to be multiple levels over that for them to consider you a rival. The club house "pro" is amazing compared to the doctor that plays a few times a month but both they and the actual "pro" golfers know where they are at in the overall pecking order.

The issue is where to put those mid range "pro" "shortstop" "open" players? They are too good for the lower levels to want to play with them even and have it be fair, but too weak to compete with the pro players. Probably the 700 range is the hardest to be in in order to find events to play in and have a chance to get to a payout, you are either banned from playing or not good enough to cash.

I remember Ike and a few other 700+ players coming to Buffalo’s for the big 1P tournament. I would say to myself, it’s crazy they want to blow 2k on an entry fee and have no shot to win this tournament. I feel bad for these low 700 players that would like to make a living playing pool but can’t. It’s a tough low paying job.

Hope you aren't saying Ike has no chance at winning any 1pkt tournament, even the 2k entry ones.

It really isn't a job- it is a choice. They choose to pay to compete.

I said he has no chance at Buffalo’s yearly tournament, probably 50/50 to even cash. The lowest FargoRate to win that tournament is around 760. He is a favorite at Red Shoe’s 1P tournament along with Mark Jarvis and a few others. Mark just knocked Ferdor to the loser side in Louisville but he can’t win it at Buffalo’s. In a short race I’ve even had lightning strike🤣

I thought so too, especially after they were entered in 2019. I found out later that it wasnt Expo workers entering them in 2019. From what I heard, it was the people working the Fargo booth.

Yes. We were there in 2019, and they kindly allowed us to process the scorecards.
This year they asked us what format we prefer for the matches, and so I expect they will be recorded at a reasonable time.

What do you mean "what format"?
