Looking for feedback from the experienced CMers out there. Of course the best is subject to personal opinion. But is there a person best tip glue out there you are using. I have had a couple tips pop in the last year and I am not happy about it. Using Joe B. tough glue now. I finally figured out not to use the Activating spray. Looking forward you your opinions.

Loc-Tite 454 has served me well, but I also use the off the shelf precision max gel. Those 2 pretty much take care of My needs for most tips, but there other brands that people are happy with too. I haven't used everything out there, but of those that I have these 2 worked best for me.

I don't use CA Activators/accelerators not even for priming tips. I just let them cure naturally.

I finnally settled on LOCTITE CONTACT GEL. Certain layered tips require you to precoat the back of the tip (after sanding), then resand, coat & press to the ferrule end. By the way I sand with 80 or 60 grit paper...JER

You make a good point Jerry, One that I think I may have forgotten to mention in another thread when I was referring to changes that I made in My own procedures that resulted in rarely having a tip pop off. There was this one other thing.

I also started using a lower grit paper to prep the tips. Not quite a low as what You use, but quite a bit lower then what I use to use. I've noticed that different brands and types of paper can vary, so It's possible that the grits are closer then the numbers would say. I use around a 220-320 but they are on the coarser side of other papers that I have used with the same rating.

Im not a cue maker yet, but ive been doing tips for years, and ive always used loctite gel. The blue containers that are $2 for two tubes. Its cheap, and it works great. I can get at least 8-10 tips from each tube.

Glue for tips.

Thanks for the replies. I use alot of Moori, Kamui, LePros, but also quite a few Karomi tips. Would the ferrules be an issue too? Some to be as soft as ABS!

Sometimes ferrule materials can cause issues. I'm sure You have noticed that sometimes glue does not like to stick to some as well as others, and some materials face off square easier then others do, but I suppose if a ferule is so soft that It moves, and the tip does not move with It then that may cause a issue too, although I have seen some ferrules actually crack out fairly badly, and the tip was still glued on reasonably well considering. Some ferrules can move from expansion and contraction as well, and depending on tenon design that can cause issue over time. Fiber ferrules were bad for that. They were usually uncapped, so when the ferrule shrank, the tenon would separate the tip from the face of the ferrule, and the only part still glued would be to the face of the tenon. That is until It decided to break loose from that also.

The activator spray can be applied in a very fine mist on the bottom of the tip. Keep in mind the activator is still active even when the dampness has dried out for upto 8 hours or so.
There are primers available for difficult to bond to plastics, like the
loctite 770. It works very well with things like acetyl,(delrin). Just put the 770 on the acetyl, let dry, then glue up.
The best of the super glues is the rubber toughened ones. They have the ability to withstand alot more shock loading than the non toughened super glues.

I know from what Dick has posted in the past, that there are certain tips (maybe Pig skin the most) that will wick up more glue than others.

I started prepping all my tip installs the same way and no problems.
I have been using the rubberized LocTite Gel. Seems with the gel, it gives a few extra seconds to get the tip lined up better.

3-M gel. Half the price of Loctite 454, holds just as good or better. DP420 for the Samsara jump/break tips. you couldn't hammer it off.

I can't bring myself to like the super glues for tip replacement. I do the replacement for friends now not commercially now so I don't have to rush the job done for anyone and I think slower set glues work much better. i do it at my pace or not at all.

GEL super glue definitely makes life easier in regard with tip installs, like Blue Hog ridr said. Doesn't leak and gives some time to adjust.
