SVB in the Philippines?!?

Shane did lose to Warren, but it was 25-14. 100,000p. And then he played Lee Van for another 100K and booked another loser. He did beat Gomez and Blado to avenge earlier defeats. I'm not so sure third tier players can give Santos the 7. I will bet on Santos if that's the case. I have deep pockets for that game. :)

Meanwhile the really big game last night was Gabica against Chang from Taiwan. Chang has won three times this year on the Guinness Tour. They played a Race to Fifteen (very short for this big a bet) for 250,000p, about $5,000. Gaga got him 15-10!
Jay, are they still playing 9-ball for the matchups? It seems to me that 10-ball should be the game of choice for the young guns. Most of the top players run racks so effortlessly, that I suppose the goal in 9-ball these days would be to run out entire sets!!

What I've seen so far are 10-Ball matches.

Joey, a lot of these young guys play Lining even now. I'll try and get Revo to play SVB since he does play Carlo even up.

That's the good thing about the pool situation here now. A lot of the young ones are coming up fast. I can think of around 16 guys below 22 that I think can hang with SVB after I saw his latest speed.

thats strong, there isnt 3 kids in America that play the 7 ball under SVB.:frown:

JoeyA took a poll here on age and there were only 4 responses of people 16-21 years old, that says one thing-pool is dead in America, and is headed the wrong direction every year.

ALL the big money matches are Ten Ball!

I don't think so Fatboy. I think most of them just think it's nerdy to post on a pool forum!! LOL

You mean for the gambling matches? I presume for the tournament it would be WPA rules since the WPA has sanctioned the event. For the gambling matches they are probably using the WPA rules since that is what the tournament will be played under.

I am one hour away and it feels like half a world! :-( GRRRR.........

At least I can watch it live on ESPN and delayed on Channel23. :-)

The updates are great!

When I was in Jacksonville, FL recently,Shane mentioned that gambling was not necessary to stay in shape once you reach his level of play but like you,

Joey interesting read............

It kind of amazed me that Shane would say that. For some games you may be able to practice and stay in shape, like straight pool, where you are at the table sometimes for long periods of time but for other rotation games like 9 ball and ten ball, I think you need to do a little gambling to toughen your competitiveness. There is a whole lot of back and forth momentum in those two disciplines that require a certain attitude to overcome those momentum swings. It doesn't have to be for large sums of money either but that is just my personal opinion.

Speaking of Shane, he just won his first round match against Alphonse Hoge of South Africa, 9 games to 1...

Santo is getting pretty long in the tooth. I don't believe he's the player he was anymore. Johnnyt

Johnny, what you say may be true.......A couple of months ago Santos matched up here at Chris's Billiards with Richie Rich, playing even One Pocket for a pretty serious $$$ bet. Opinions here were divided as to who should win, and consequently, side action went both ways. Well, the result was....

Richie drilled him, with Santos not playing like the old Santos, and missing some very makeable shots, including ball in hand on a scratch.

Updates pls anyone? I'm most interested in how the Americans are doing matching up with the locals. Thanks.

Russian Petiza (It's his name, he is not Russian :)) played even against multiple European Champion Alex Lely, and took lots of pesos from his pockets.

I have never seen Santos play, but wouldn't be surprised if lots of unknown players in Manila can give him more than he can handle

i gambled about 10 hrs every day last WC 9-ball in Manilla. I was playing well, but playing Jerome Penha, Carlos Biado and Russian...i never closed a deal against them....played my heart out, but they do that always, and are thus better and tougher. F**K! when playing Kawabata in between or some taiwanese it was a relief (did close the deal haha).

although Russian hit me the hardest, i was most impressed by Carlos. all 10-ball races to 13 or 15, they and him more than anybody stringing racks with ease. playing a lot of creative positional play.

they use other balls more to get to another ball, instead of killing the rock, avoiding contact with another ball and then having to drag/slowspin for the next shot. also a lot of kiss-shots. and all break well.

Yiehaa!! never seen anything like it.all monsters in one poolroom.

Don't worry plague, you'll get to their level, that is if you'll never run out of money!

Here's a word of advise, you can play them for cheap sets, they'll still take the game seriously, they don't fool or monkey around when it comes to money, be it big or small.

I did see your match agaist Russian, but didn't know you played Carlo Biado also.

Carlo has impressed me the most also. First time I saw him in Feb 2007 I barely noticed him, but he has really improved the last 1,5 years, and now he is kicking ass on the Villard Tour in the Philippines.

This summer I got a chance to play Carlo some one-pocket, and he played some beautiful positionshots. He, and Jharome Pena, will be the new international stars from Philippines.

When will you visit Manila again, Alex?

you can imagine guys how proud is one Russian (not Petiza but a real one :)) who managed to beat Biado in hill-hill match in Dumaguete qualifier... He is just an amateur (and that wasn't me :() and noone could believe it. I think I did put some photos from that tournament in my "Philippines Illustrated" thread. Carlo and everyone around were laughing because they must have been thinking they wer dreaming ;)

Okay, back to impressive Shane now.
