SVB withdraws from future WPA events

That makes sense to me. It comes up because these players have all cam forward saying:

And so it was curious if the Intl Open was sanctioned and if these players were going to boycott it. But it appears not sanctioned and moot.

The only other US-based tournament that would raise that same question is Turning Stone. That is on the WPA calendar and appears to be sanctioned. Will we see this same deluge of players boycotting Turning Stone because it is WPA sanctioned? Even players that have already signed up? Even a player that's won it more than anyone else and has been advertised as confirmed?
TS is mainly a regional event anyway

Well..... I just looked at the WPA calendar. I see the following listed as WPA ranking events ?!?

US Open, Atlantic City
International Open, (listed as Norfolk)
Mosconi Cup, Orlando

More than a little confused/confusing.

The US Open is on top of the Euro Tour Treviso Open (Italy)

They are listed as “Men’s events” where Turning Stone is color coded as a “Member Event” 🤷‍♂️

Both men and women can play in Turning Stone because it has been the annual end event for his tour, which is open to both men and women. Also, if I can recall, Mike Zuglan does not like to seed players in Turning Stone. I'm not sure if he's still doing it like that, but that's the way he did it for years. He also has no problem ejecting and banning poorly behaved players. He runs a tight ship.

I emailed Pat Oct 8, 2023 when the shit hit the fan, and I asked him to remove the WPA sanctioning from his International Open. He wrote me back and said it's sanctioned by the WPA and is also a MR points event. IDK if he changed it for the 2024 event.

I've been following this drama closely for 2 years now. I'm confused what happened between the time this press release was issued and today. I recall Karl Boyes called it "Fake News" when it hit. It was later found out (if I'm remembering correctly), that WPA wrote this release on their own, without any input from MR. In other words, WPA would "treat" MR events as being WPA sanctioned, even though they were not sanctioned, and even though MR wanted nothing to do with the WPA by that point. Anyway, did that all change? This release clearly states no bans by WPA or its member federations.

note that the sticking point, the hanoi open, is missing on that list. it's the ACBS turf war..

Isn't it the ACBS currently banning players, not the WPA?

Yes, but by WPA rules (if I understand them correctly) if any member bans a player, then all other members must also.

Someone earlier in the thread wrote something like "the tail wagging the dog". I feel that's the best summary of the whole thing. ACBS effectively controlling the entire "organized" world pool structure.

Maybe WPA should change its rules on their next vote?

I haven't seen any published minutes of any of these organizations being made available. Well, I looked for WPA and BCA. I would like to see actual vote counts etc.

Correct. The ACBS has the authority to make those kinds of decisions regarding events in their continent and regarding players representing from their continent. I would argue in some cases the ACBS is violating the WCBS charter. In other cases they are operating within their right, even if considered in poor taste.

But the WPA certainly has a role in it. If a suspended ACBS player tries to play in an EPBF event outside Asia, the WPA is the parent organization requiring the EPBF to recognize and enforce the suspension. And it's also worth noting the ACBS has only been the Asian member of the WPA for about the last three years. Prior to that the APBU was the Asian member but was kicked out by the WPA. So in effect, the WPA empowered the ACBS and has some accountability for bringing them to the party and their behaviors.

Same thing in carom with governing federation UMB on warpath with promoter PBA which like Matchroom offered better prize money

This WPA/ACBS v MR/ UMB v PBA "war" is being waged in Vietnam where billiards/cue sports is booming.
No surprise that WPA has new 9 ball event Ho Chi Minh Open (1st prize $35K) next month just before Peri Open/Hanoi Open. Predator also moving World 10 Ball Championship next year to Vietnam

no player should ever get banned if they choose to play in a tournament of their choice that they are eligible to enter.

banning gives too much power to an organization.

what if your favorite restaurant banned you for eating someplace else.
or you worked at starbucks and got fired for drinking another brand coffee. etc, etc.

I agree to a point. What about contractual duties? If a player signs a contact saying this or that aren't they bound by it? I have no clue what's in a WNT player's agreement. I don't think they care where their stable of players play as long as they show up for the WNT events deemed part of the agreement.

They banned wearing all black clothes in El Paso Texas Middle School. The parents should dress the kids in black everyday. I'd drive my kid to school dressed like Men In Black in my black truck.
School boards are out of control.
Those in power around the world are enjoying banning everything and everyone from whatever crawls up their ass. Most puppets go along with a ban while only a few stand up.
Banning is a nice way to remove freedom.
