Table Decision

I am close to finally finishing off my basement. I have enough room for a 9 foot table but I am going to go with an 8 foot just to give me a little extra clearance. I am trying to decide between a Gabriels Signature Pro or a Diamond Professional. Does anyone have a preference between these two? What would be a good price? Is it ok to set them up on carpet with thick padding underneath?

Diamond. And if you are going to use carpet, a synthetic jute pad underneath will help to keep it from moving.

I once played on Gabriels during a tournament and didn't like them at all. Cut shots that normally would've gone in on a GC or a Diamond wouldn't go in a Gabriels, Nostroke can attest to that.

Go with the Diamond Pro. If you can play well on that table, you can easily adjust to any other table. I wish I had one, but I won't give up my GCI.

The Gabriels tables at the World 14.1 had much more generous pockets than the Diamonds at the DCC this year.

I posted this in the other table thread, but here goes:

I used to be a Gold Crown fan, but not anymore. I love Diamond Pro's now. Diamond's are a girl's best friend, LOL.

I really like the flat pockets so that you don't have to jack up or scrape your stick, the ball separator, the wide space below to get your balls out, the tight pockets, the nice compartment for the rack, (if you take the rack out, you can see with a flashlight where the balls hang up, if they ever do) they roll true, they bank true, and the Diamond light is the best in the industry.

I'm going out on a limb here, but if you are at all serious about pool (or want to become serious) you WILL REGRET IT if you don't get a 9 footer. If you have 15 feet by 19 feet you have enough room. You don't need extra room if you are a serious player, you need adequate room and a 9 footer. JMO

P.S. - an old, used 9 footer is infinitely preferable to a new 8 footer.

I totally agree with betmore on this one. Get the 9 footer for sure.

My room is about 15 by 21 but I am putting a bar at one end of the room. So I have about 15 by 17 of clear space. I might have to draw a table on the concrete or set up a mock table out of 2 X 4's to see what size will be right.

You gotta get a 9' table. The bar will obviously have to go! :D

PSA,
Too true.

If you want to be an alcoholic, you get a bar.

If you want to be a pool player, you get a 9 footer.

I have the luxury of being able to play regularly on a brand new Diamond and a brand new Gabriels at the room I frequent. Both are 9 footer. I haven't tried the new Diamond 8 footers in the room.

I prefer the Diamond, but the preference is so small I tend to play on the Gabriels more often due to it having slightly more clearance. I don't think you can go wrong with either table. Like others have said, if you have the room, go with a nine footer.

Chris,
I'm not sure if this holds true for all Diamonds, BUT the Diamond 8 footers at the local hall play VERY different from the Diamond 9 footers. Much easier pockets (though the tables otherwise look identical). Our friend may want to check this out before purchasing.

Table

The Diamond and Gabriels are great tables. I would get the Diamond pro with the diamond wood rails. It will stay nice as long as you own the table. I think the price on the Diamond should be better and most of the tournaments are being played on Diamonds now.

I would put the bar somewhere else, you have just enough room for the table.
