Table Difficulty Factor (TDF) for measuring table "toughness"

Yes, a Gold Crown (or other table) with the same pocket mouth and facing angle will play harder than a Diamond, because the shelf depth on the Diamond is deeper. That can't be changed unless you somehow make the slate deeper with some epoxy grafted on or similar (not practical).
Awesome! So extending the subrail with minimal shim facing will bring older table to play as tough or tougher than diamon table!!! Thanks for your confirmations. It is time to have it done

Not quite. It will play harder than before. But not as tough as a Diamond because Diamond has a longer slate pocket shelf than most other tables.

Still, if you do want tougher pockets, it’s worth doing.

Edit: I had a typo on the first post. Meant to say the table with the longer shelf plays harder, all other being equal. I’ll go edit it.

You gave pockets 3x the factor as the table size. It should be the opposite.
For equal sized pockets, a spot shot on a 9-footer (~35.4" distance) has an almost 30% smaller OB contact patch (including pocket "slop") than a spot shot on a 6-footer (~25.5" distance). Maybe that's the average difference for all comparable shots on the two tables...?

Don't know if that supports your point or not...

And what exact reasons are for newer cloths to make balls go in easier ? I have heard this from many players and pros alike

System is still flawed 11 years later. You gave pockets 3x the factor as the table size. It should be the opposite.

The TDF system might not be perfect, but lots of care and deliberation went into the development of the system, with input from many people, including many people on AZB. For those who want to learn more, see the info and links in the "How were the values and ranges chosen for each of the TDF factors?" section here:

Dr Dave assigned 3x the factor for pockets than table size.

That's not really true. See how the factors are calculated in the table difficulty factor document. The pocket factors depend on each other in complicated ways so the effects are not triple-counted inappropriately as you are suggesting. Table size is definitely the most important factor unless the pockets are ridiculously tight due to small size, large facing angle, and shelf depth, all of which contribute to table difficulty in different proportions based on each of the other factors.

Didn't have the time to read all the posts. From a players standpoint the HVAC system or not. Playing Houston or AZ. Playing with a swamp cooler or not for me have thee most effect on play, why? Because these conditions cause more change during play, other than ball washer buffing after each ball tray return, ruining the surface area, causing ball porosity. I played in one room in MN yrs ago.... that did this. After 30 minutes of play, you could wipe an obj. ball with one finger and visually see A clean line in the ball, bordered by chalk dirt.

The TDF system does not account for cloth, cushion, ball, and environmental conditions.

The TDF system does not account for cloth, cushion, ball, and environmental conditions.
I didn't think it did....
I know that's not possible, I'd rather let the cranium figure that ''feel'' out, be a tough read para me. :):):):)

As grass grows.

My mind sees this change.... the same as dirt buildup on the balls, effecting all of play.

Just purchased a GC4, was told it was completely stock and never altered, and still looks brand new to be honest.

Measurements are
8'+, 4 7/8", 6/8", 1.5" - 0.86
