Korvettes Shopping Center at Welsh & Roosevelt Blvd in Phily. The room was MOULIN.

Have not been to Markleys in Norristown but spoke to the owner. He came up from Florida. Bought the place and fixed it up. He's trying hard to promote his room. I hope he does well.

Markleys is doing fine.
They cleaned it up a bit, got rid of the food tables that were between the outer row of pool tables and the inner tables and replaced them with a permanent wooden food counter. Nice touch.
Added some diamond bar boxes looking to get some leagues going.

And the houseman just happens to be the houseman that worked at Tacony for 17 years.

Houseman ....Ken??

Sorry to Jack this thread but this is great news......glad to see Markley opens at noon Weds-Fri.

So what happened to WIZ ...the x cook? Where will the Tacony crowd go after it closes. This is worse than H&H shutting down.

Couldn't tell you what happened to him. I have no idea.
Last time I was actually there was years and years ago.
I'm sure they will find a place to hang out.
They always do.

Frank,
I grew up with WIZ, he lived up the street from my parents old house. Kenny B. and I were the best of friends. He showed me a thing or two about moving the cue ball aroung the table. He is a very good straight pool player. He shared stories about his younger days playing straight's with Pete Tascarella. He was from the Scranton area, I do miss his company. I'm also good friends with Tony P. he and WIZ both worked the kitchen area. I meet with Tony every year at the SBE, he works one of the vendor booth's. The good old days at Tacony.

The last I heard Tacony Billiards is closing it's doors soon. The city and the school district are using the building for a new Charter School.

Some of us learned more about life from the poolroom than school.

Don't think I have ever been there. N. Philly was a BAD place to be travelling around by yourself looking for cheap. Then again, back then RIZZO was mayor, you had to worry more about the cops! :(

But to his credit, you could walk the streets of Germantown at night with no fear of getting killed.
Used to play a guy named "Sammy" in a Cheltenham bar every so often. Seemed like everyone knew him!

Tacony is closing....I now have a collectable:D

Remember the Cue & Cushion on Cheltenham Ave next to the Chinese restaurant?

hmmmm, you are jogging my memory here. I seldom played poolhalls back then. Bars and bowling alleys seemed the place to find peops that practiced,(away from poolhalls).

I do recall a place near there by Fox Chase Cancer Center. Maybe 1/2 mile from there off of Township line rd.
I also recall out that way a bar called the "Moose Lodge," but if I recall correctly it was a private club, and in Lansdale.
I woul like to know more about the place in Norristown. Next time I go by that way, I'll stop in .

It was Burholme Billiards on Township Line Rd. BB was the first room in that area.
When it closed I think it became a Volkswagon aftermarket store.

Great article. Thanks for posting.

Frank,
I know all and played most of the names on that list. Charlie and I played nine ball and one pocket back in the day. Shaky, a roofer by trade, he hand was always shaking but managed to play a descent game of one pocket. I gained a ton of knowledge about the game thanks to those players named in the article. Reading this article brings back wonderful memories, miss all those guys.

It's sad when a room closes. Hopefully it's a new beginning somewhere else (and close by).
Wonderful memories is right. And Priceless.
