NEED Help on this, so a guy is trying to sell me an old "TAD" cue for $500 with two shafts, Old 70's Tad he says.

But how do I know it's real? Does "TAD" have the logo "TAD" on it in the 70's?

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?

Email sent to me: (I am kind of sketchy about it).....

Here some pictures of the cue. They are kind of dark but the cue is a blond cue. It is from the early 70s or the late 60s. I took it to Tad in Stanton about 1998, he said he made it in the early 70s. He told me he put a number in all the butts of his cues and he could tell exactly when he made but I didn't have him check the number when I was there since he vouched for the cue himself. I just recently checked the number and it is #274. I was trying to estimate the age of the cue and at the rate of 30 cues a year, a number i feel is small, it does place it around early 70s. The cue is still very straight with both shafts and 1 has an ivory ferall. Something I think was a special order. It has a very good hit and breaks like crazy. It has been well played, all over, in many different bars and pools halls but it has held up great. Once I let Keith McCready use it to play Efren Reyes in a game of 1 pocket for $1000 but he lost by 1 ball. Pretty good against Efren with a cue he never used before. Well anyways its a great cue amd a testament to Tad that after almost 40 years it still plays great. I already have an offer but he's coming from japan on business and wants me to hold it. I not sure what I am going to do so please let know because I haven't given him a decision yet but he is waiting. I was thinking sbout telling him I was going relist it for more and if it didn't sell in a week I'd hold it for him. It is yours for $500 if you want it now since I haven't relisted yet.

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?

Hard to tell from the photos, but the butt cap looks right...you would need better pix to be sure. As I am sure you know, if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. If in fact this guy knew enough about Tad cues to loan this one to Keith McCready, then he knows the true value. Proceed with caution, and best of luck.

No logo on early cues.....

Hey Joe,

How much roughly if this was authentic and in good condition?

Got a range?

Looks like birds eye forearm.

The guy lives 1 hour drive from me, so i'll ask for more detailed pictures....before procedding.

A new plain Tad player has a retail of $1800. Anywhere between $1000-1500 for one like this if everything is straight, reasonably full shafts, etc and in decent shape. If it were a particularly collectible one in exceptional condition, or with a provenance, a little more, maybe.

Closeups

Need to see closeups. Check under the bumper too.
To me everything looks TAD except the big pin

p.m. sent, Bob C
Tad only used a 3/8x12 pin for his big pin. What is that one?.

I asked the seller for more detailed pictures of Bumper/Butt, pins, shaft collar, and Ferrules.

Well, I'll post if pictures when the guy sends them.

Don't really want to do anything but gather more info at the moment, taking precautions to the fullest extent. Since even $500 is a lot of money for me, and pocket CHANGE for you Millionairs AZBers.

Logo started in 1988, despite what the bluebook says. The shape of the butt doesn't look correct for a Tad and also I have yet to see a Tad where the shafts and butt are equal in length. Not impossible but better photos would be needed to authenticate--including a photo under the bumper. This cue is modeled after Tad's Martin style cue.

That is indeed a Tad cue :)...i might be wrong but it looks like a tad cue...butt cap is long and round only Tad make that kind of buttcap :)

Looks like all the right stuff to me, also, but I am no Tad expert. Shafts appear to be about 1/2"-1" longer than the butt, as Martin had suggested.

If possible, have him send close pix of the joint and butt sleeve/butt cap, as well as the inside of the butt cap.

Looks like 3/8x12 pin...if it is a fake, it is a danged good one. Still, exercise caution, and inspect it carefully if you drive there to see it.

Here are more pictures Tuan. To give you a better idea I'll tell what I think some of the problems with the cue are. The shafts could be cleaned up some. The ivory ferall has a slight discoloration on the tip and a small scratch. This ferall is old and ivory discolors. The ferall on the other shaft has always had a redish tint and I think it probably came from Tad that way because the joint has the same color except a little less so. The bumper end of the butt has a very slight yellowing due to age. These are very small things and most could be corrected very cheap. This cue not even made by the hands of Tad would cost $1000. The fact that this is an early Tad gives this cue a value that will only go up. The cues playability is as good as the day Tad made it. The true test can only be made at a table.
