Talking End Patterns

He guys,

I've been talking end patters with my good buddy and sparring partner. Recently I brought my video camera with me for one of our sparring sessions and this scenario came up.
I see the good end pattern and I don't tell him before hand, so I can see how he plays it out. He ends up playing a different sequence then I thought and ends up getting himself in trouble.

Just thought I would stir up some conversation and get some views on the layout. There are probably multiple ways of doing this. But one sticks out in mind. I will try to edit the video soon to show how he plays it out soon. That is as long as he consents to it, and if my ailing PC can handle editing the video.

At the beginning of the video from the break i had a relativly descent run of 29, but i got locked up against the rack on a breakshot because i didnt execute the path to the back of the rack correctly. i would like to share this as well !!!

interesting layout, Steve -- geez, there are Tons of possible patterns here. i'm assuming that stripe on the right is your break ball, even though it looks high in the pic?

i'll tell you what i *don't* like, and that's ending with 14-3. it's a classic, but i hate all the angles involved in this particular case -- way too fussy.

i Do like ending 7-10, and there are a bunch of ways to get there. after thinking about several, i think i like best 4-3-5-14-7-10.

i don't like the 5 for a break, but it's more tempting than usual with the 14-7 to set up for it.

I like going 7-10-3. It gets me a little closer - and I feel as if I can line up on the BB better with the 3 than with the 10. Just a matter of preference.

End Pattern

Steve, post the clip of my end pattern. Honestly I don't remember what I did here, but I'm sure I screwed it up somehow.

Be patient with me... I'm still a work in progress (a hack!).

I'm loving 14.1 and learning a little bit more each time I play.

End Pattern

Can you post the crazy end pattern where I shot a 1 ball in the corner and came around 4 rails for the 8 ball at the bottom of the stack for a break shot.

It was definitely not the best end pattern but I seem to recall that I got on that ball. Question is did I make the 8 once I got there... and why was I in that situation? :)

IMHO this is the correct pattern. Several ways to get to the 7, but once you are in reasonable line on the 7 it is hard for a decent player to mess up.

Here's a link to the video, sorry if it's low quality. I used my iPhone to record it playing on my tv.

According to the responses I'm guessing it is unclear whether that ball up table is the 7 or the 8.

BTW, I could view the video either.

It looks to me that since the break ball is so high, you risk getting a glancing blow on the top of the rack, or no hit at all, if your break shot is too sharp an angle. Picture the cue ball where the 3 ball is, for example. On the other hand, the 10 is in an ideal spot to allow you to control exactly what angle you want on that break ball so that you can go into the top of the pack with more force.

Given that supposition, I think a shot on the 14 would serve as a kind of 2 way shot for the 3 or the 4 in case of botched position on the 3. The 3 is in a bad spot and interferes with an easy 5-7-10 ending pattern. If you stun into the 14 the cue ball will drift over easily for a shot on the 3 in the side. The side pockets look reasonably forgiving, so a slight angle on the 3 shouldn't be too dangerous. Come off the side rail with the cb for a shot on the 4, and the rest are ducks. I prefer 14-3 over 4-3 because it is a little dicey to get on the 3 with the break ball where it is, at least compared to the 14 which gives you an unimpeded path to the 3.

The 5-7-10 is such a perfect ending pattern that I hate to give it up. You can shoot a stop shot on the 10, or just roll ahead 2 inches or 3 inches, whatever you need to get perfect on the break ball.

I am with with Blackjack I like that 14 4 5 7 10 3

Video was marked private for me as well

I just watched the Mika Konstantin semi from derby that DMG posted (thank you dennis) and Mika had a few breaks where the ball was high he just hit them medium to soft and took what he got the rack opened enough and he was keeping the CB above the rack mid table.

I would pocket the 14 ball and try to get a hair above the 3, then I can pocket the three and and to draw and bump the 12 down a bit - it seem like a free shot to make a break shot that is sitting a bit too high into an ideal b.s. The ten would be a decent key ball for what I think is the twelve and final b.s. Also by saving the ten for key ball - if something goes astray I use the ten for the b.s.

What about using the 7 as a KB for the 5? Personally, I don't like it when the ball is that far in the pocket- but I've seen a lot of people use these side pocket breaks to really get into the balls - for me its not the best option - but it is another option that is there.

The cue ball got away from him. I was told a long time ago - stop shots - stop shots - stop shots. Whenever possible, connect the dots. :)
