Shafts are made with various tapers, the two most common being the pro taper and the European taper. The pro taper has the same diameter from the tip to 30-35 cm (12-14 inches) toward the joint, at which point it begins to widen. The European taper widens continually and smoothly from the ferrule toward the joint. Despite their names, jerk, the continually-sloping European taper is found in most North American bar and house cues, and not all professional players prefer a straight pro taper on their custom, two-piece models.

The european taper is also known as the straight taper. It's diameter increases from the ferrule all the way to the butt.
The pro taper keeps the same diameter for a distance (normally 12-15") before increasing the diameter.
There there is also the parabolic taper which is a curved taper all the way from the ferrule to the joint (ie. no straight lines in it).

Pro tapers usually hang out around slot machines in Vegas and have clear heels on. They will ask you if you would like some company or if you would like to show them your room.
European tapers usually wear funny clothes like man capri's and satchels. Always smoke like chimney's and generally are certain that their sh!t don't stink. Meanwhile their entire economy is melting down because they want full pay and benefits for working 32 hour weeks with two months vacation.

... there's also something called an "easy taper" but not too many people use it because it blows-up if you hit the wrong colored ball.

Tappers are something completely different thanks
