If Earl or anyone else won every game of pool they ever played and no one knew about it just how does that help the situation? Despite what Eddie said in COM just being the best at something doesn't mean you are going to get rich. See the Olympics for proof of that.
Playing well just gets you a seat the table. Capitalizing on that ability requires more work, luck and smart decisions.
Pool is popular by the way...just not on this side of the world but I agree with you for the most part on your final point as far as the U.S. in its current state goes.
I'm not going to get back into my opinion of what happened. I probably said too much after the event simply because I was so pissed off at the circus it turned into. IMO its better to move forward and try to do something positive than rehash something negative.

You just don't get it, do you? Let me say this one more time - THE ABSOLUTE BEST THING FOR PROFESSIONAL POOL PLAYERS IS TO BE SEEN ON TELEVISION MULTIPLE TIMES! They can't "buy" this type of exposure! It would cost far too much. At one time, ESPN was offering this to them for FREE and they threw it away!
Look at what the same exposure has done for the women. Jeanette Lee is a superstar, by far the biggest in pool. And Allison, Karen and Ga Young are better known than any of the men players (except in Asia where they are on TV frequently). I GUARANTEE you they all signed television releases gladly!

Look, I won't try to convince anyone that I am a psychiatrist or even a psychologist but I guess my opinion is just as valid as anyone else who is not a mental health professional.
I've listened to Earl Strickland and Joe Rogan's youtube video and it was entertaining to me.
If anything, this video confirmed for me that Earl is not mentally ill and not "crazy". Earl may be many other things but he is not these, at least not in my opinion.
Personally, I think Earl is trying to become the next Minnesota Fats, using his natural talent, his ability to talk shit, his unseemly inclination to knock other professionals (sometimes even including his own) as well as his ability to see himself as a victim in his own sport which seems to hold him simultaneously in equal amounts of esteem and disdain.
I can only hope that his lifetime of effort will one day compensate him for his dedication to a sport that rewards its athletes so poorly.
Maybe between Ryan Seacrest & Kim Kardashian one of them will see fit to take a shot at producing a TV show with Earl Strickland as the star. That being said, it is not likely to change the world of pool one way or another.

And sadly, in this video Joe made a very honest offer to help out pool. Earl wanted no part of it. Nothing has changed as far as the men's ability to run off anyone who wants to help.
Should that offer ever be reconsidered in the future, hopefully they will showcase someone who can demonstrate the difference between bangers and professional players. Not just on the table, with some random one-off shot, but in the attitude, routine, preparation, etc that goes into playing for a living. That changes the image of pool here from a bunch of shady hustlers to someone taking their sport professionally.
Very true. I'm not sure this is good for pool, but it probably would be "good" television or at least by todays standards. With the onslaught of train wreck reality shows, including Fear Factor, an Earl reality show would probably have a market.

Yes, that would be nice. But which do you think would have a better chance of being "successful" -- (1) a show like you have described or (2) something like an Earl being Earl reality show or a travesty like Pool, Poker & Pain?

Depends on the audience you want really. My opinion is just that, my own, and it doesn't mean it's right for everyone. If you love watching freight trains collide and seeing bodies with limbs missing we probably don't share the same interests. It doesn't mean my interests are "better", just different. And that's the key really, removing yourself from the equation.
My opinion is based on what I see work, what I see generate revenue and not just TV ratings for people who want to see destruction, not pool. I don't know if the idea of Earl ranting, raving is constructive to pool as a whole but I appreciate Joe making the offer. That said, I made the video public for other reasons and edited out parts the public doesn't need to see.
You're being naive and don't understand economics. If you invented a sport, it would stay in your basement mostly because there is no current demand for it. If ESPN wanted to air it to fill in some time, you would probably get well over a million views thus creating a demand for those who wanted to buy the product. So by putting your stuff on there for free you have free advertisement to MILLIONS.
Once there becomes a solid demand for it, THEN you can start demanding a little money for what you're doing.
What earl and others effectively did is walk into ESPN offices and demand they pay top dollar for something that didn't even have that many viewers.... stupid

OK- so they were smart, signed, and had great exposure on television. And here we are in this thread discussing the death of pool.
Anyway- I don't think too many men pool players are going to start wearing a low cut neckline while they play pool on television anytime soon.
Probably 90% will know who Jeanette is, but the will probably refer to her as "that asian chick". Very few if any will know who Alison, Karen or Ga Young are. Unlike you though, most people here know Karen's last name and it isn't (?).
Yes, it is true that Jeanette has sex appeal and the public recognizes it, but she also has done well with her personal branding (i.e. the black leather outfits and her nickname "The Black Widow").
Of course the guys won't generate a crowd with a low neckline, but turn the tables. Ask how many women from the WNBA the average person could name. Not many if any I presume.

There is as much chance of a future solid demand for watching pool players play pool on television as there is for the Colorado River reversing course. That's why ESPN wasn't willing to pay them one penny. ESPN understands economics and you DON'T.
And what's with the "top dollar" comment? Were you privy to how much the pool players were asking? If you weren't Jay seems to know the details. Maybe he'll share them with us.
