TAR 29: Orcollo vs Van Boening August 17-19

I like 8-ball too. But the Schmidt/Deuel match was pretty quick? It was 4 hours. I missed a chunk (in the middle) of it because I couldn't stay with it that long and I'm not like ADD or anything, it's just hard to "watch TV" for four hours with no pause button and so few short breaks. I would rather see a race to 12. Maybe TAR could schedule breaks like 5 or 10 minutes long after the 5th, 10th, 15th racks and so on. As a player I have no problem playing hours on end with few breaks. But for some reason, as a viewer I find it difficult. edit: Not to mention finding a 4 hour chunk of time when you have no control over the start time.

I'm on the fence about buying the 8-ball stream. But I know I won't get the other matches. It's nice to be able to buy the matches separately. I appreciate that.

edit: If these were available as downloads/DVD's, I would buy 8-ball for sure and probably 10-ball too. This would be contingent on the funds, but the point is I'm more likely to spend money on video than streams. I know Justin is working on that, but I wanted to add incentive to make it happen. I am assuming that if I feel this way, others do as well.

I am meeting with a guy this week to lay out what we need and get a quote. Last quote from a guy in Croatia of all places was $7000 up front with no mention of bandwidth/storage prices. This web stuff is a nightmare.

It's stuff like this makes me appreciate being part of az.
Thanks for setting this up! Going to be Epic nonetheless.

Here's to hoping you can make it work!

And if you can't, thanks for trying. And thanks for TAR in general.

TAR breaks

I'll suggest this (again) for streaming. Have a break schedule that consists of fairly frequent and fairly long breaks. Maybe every 5th rack for 8-ball, every third rack for 1-pocket, every 10th rack for 10-ball? Make the breaks 5 minutes long, maybe even 10.

Have the schedule stated in advance. And at the start of each break announce the schedule again, and announce that particular break too, clearly so it can be heard on the stream.

"We are now going to take a 5 minute break. We are taking a 5 minute break every 5th rack".

This way viewers can plan for *their* breaks.

For videos, you could edit out the breaks.

Justin,
Your PM inbox is full.
Is it possible for me to buy 2 last night tickets on the 19th.
Please PM me the details.

Thanks.

No, this would not go over well with the players. Too many breaks will mess with the flow of the match.

Would not go over well with the viewers either, if I am watching pool I want to watch pool, not have what in effect would be 5 minute ad breaks every 1/2 hour. Part of the cool thing about the streams is you get pure pool, no commercial breaks.

Opinions are fine. Gives people things to think about. If the negatives of more breaks would out-weight the positives, then TAR shouldn't do it.

I wasn't even thinking in terms of advertisements. Is that the only issue you would have with it, or other things too?

As for the players not wanting the flow interrupted, I am seeing this as a commercial enterprise where you want to keep the paying customers happy. If enough customers say they want pauses, then I think the players need to accept that. But I would say that the right balance needs to be struck.

From what I think I understand, TAR started out streaming events organized by others on-location, and had little or no control over the format (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Now TAR has a studio and basically is the organizer of an event. They have a customer base, and they seem to heed what the customers want since they do have more control now. Basically I'm saying that it is evolving from one thing slightly into something else, and when that happens, sometimes some minor changes are helpful.

I wouldn't want a TAR match to be a full blown TV style production. Sometimes those are made too glossy, have racks edited out to fit the time slot, etc. etc.

I am saying that a LIVE stream of a VERY LONG match does present some issues.

My main issue would be a 5 minute break in the action every 1/2 hour. I do not have things I just must do every 1/2 hour for 5 minutes. My bladder is stronger then that, I can grab a beer from my fridge in less time then it takes to rack the balls, I simply want to watch the pool without much interuption in the action and I am going to guess that if you did a poll a vast majority of people would vote for the single 15 minute break we currently have instead of constant 5 minute breaks every 5 games.

Luckily I am sure JCIN knows this and would never attempt to try something like this because both the players AND almost all of the fans would be against it.

Actually a poll might be a good idea. But if Justin's mindset on this is already firmly established...

hey Jcin, are you offering a special to buy all 3 days again? If so when will be the link to purchase be up? Thanks for bringing this match, been waiting for it for a while now.

Looking forward to this one, especially with the 8 Ball again. I knew the response to it would be terrific since so many of us play league 8 Ball.

I only wish the Friday session started a little later, like 6PM PDT to give more of us a chance to get home from work and get together with friends to catch it live from the beginning. This would be a 9PM start EDT, which wouldn't end THAT late considering it's a weekend. The last 8 Ball only took about 4 hours.

Nonetheless, I'm tuning in. :grin-square:
