Something we have been talking about lately is that we need to do a better job of documenting, keeping track of and reporting the stats on our matches. In the past we always get too busy or have to run around doing a hundred things to sit down at the end of the day and write a concise report about happened that day during the match.

So this is what we were thinking: We need two people to watch the match and keep stats then at the end of the day write a short synopsis of the days action which would be sent out in a press release telling everyone what is going on. All of the stats would be posted on our site for future reference whenever a question arises about what the final score was on day 2 or total margin of victory or biggest package run.

My idea is this: TAR would offer a free Pay Per View to the persons who agreed to do it and when the match was over and all the stats recorded, reports written and delivered we would compensate them by giving them either a free OB shaft or $200 worth of TAR merchandise.

My first question is how should we go about picking these two people? We cant just give away 50 PPV's and see who turns what in at the end. But we understand not everyone can sit and watch all three days of the match as well. So if anyone has any suggestions about to how to pick people to help out we would love to hear them.

Very good idea and a cool offer for someone who can watch from start to finish. I plan on being there (in Des Moines), and if I'm not distracted from nearly half of the play I'll be surprised (and maybe a bit disappointed :p ). I'll be wearing my red TAR shirt and lugging around my It's George with the TAR patch....hopefully y'all will have some more stuff for me to buy to show my support. You guys are GREAT!

JC,

The only thing I can think of is to have 2 logins and passwords available, only. Then, have a list of who can commit to doing this, for how long. Line up 6 ppl and give one login to 3 and the other login to the other 3. Designate who is first, second and third on the list.

It can work like this:

List 1

1. Aaa
2. Bbb
3. Ccc

Aaa has first shot at the spot. If Aaa can't hang, then Bbb takes over and so on. All 3 ppl share the same login info so only one person can login with that user name.

Do the same for List 2.

In Phoenix there is a guy named John Casey that has his own unique way of scoring games. It looks like chicken scratching, but once he plugs it into the computer you get all kinds of stat's and reports, including an overall score.

It's much better than Accu-stat's or anything else I have seen.

It takes into account safeties, effect safes, kicking, banking, etc. etc. I know it's fairly easy as I've seen him score 4 tables at the sametime without any issue.

I just sent him a message and will get back to you.

I would take applications WITH REFERENCES - not just the first two people that sign up, obviously. And these people must realize that they are representing TAR - which has worked hard to keep an outstanding name in the pool world.

My name is John Casey. I am the one that Stuckart mentioned in his post above. He also notified me about this with a text message, figuring that I'd be interested based on the passion and interest that I've invested into this. And he's right!!! I'm interested.

It's been a hobby and fascination of mine. I have put together a statistical rating package that I've been working on for many years. It brings additional details and nuances to accessing player performance on the pool table by use of statistics.

Some of its unique features is that it tracks not only breaking percentage, but shooting percentage, defense and even some counter defensive play and many more.

Many people have seen a simplified version of the system that I created / innovated. This includes Sarah Rousey, Mark Griffin of BCA/CSI, and unfortunately Frank Alvarez III of UPA as well.

We have since advanced the software package to enhance its capabilities even further.
We are perfectly situated to provide exactly the service that you are requesting.

Some interesting stats that I have found interesting are:
Kelly Fisher v Allison Fisher - 2007 Quarterfinals match
After 6 games, Allison Fisher was playing 100% perfect pool. Every time she got to the table, she ran out to win the game. When she broke, she made something and ran out. And when Kelly errored, Allison came to the table and ran out. Score was 5-1 because Kelly also had a break and run.
I just thought that was fascinating, because the 5-1 score didn't adequately show how well Allison was playing to most observers without the stats.

Another one that sounds interesting is tracking several matches of Efren Reyes. We all know that he's the magician.
In top pro matches, it was better for the opponent if Efren was playing defense on them, rather than playing defense against Efren.
Normally, playing defense against an opponent will net an advantage to the defensive player. But this was overwhelmingly not true when playing defense on Efren.

In over 100 games in the Shane Van Boening v John Hennesee 10 ball match (race to 8 ahead) with a wild 9 spot.

Shane Van Boening
93% - shooting
63% - successful breaking

John Hennessee
89% - shooting
68% - successful breaking

With both of them missing or erroring a shot only once in every 3 games (on average).

You need a writing sample -- the stats are not the hard part of the deal.

Have them watch a stream from the internet, do the stats and the write up. (Write up being most important.)

JMO

Flickit is the guy I was talking about.

I imagine John has a team of people that understand his system now as he runs a full league with these stat's. It's really easy to see how persons fit into each category and has ups and downs over time, etc.

I would ask people to audition. Just make an announcement that this is what you're looking for, have the people either pick a lengthy youtube match or one of yours and write something up about it. They send you their report as an audition, then you pick the ones you like.

You should pick me!

Haha, seriously though, some of the criteria you could use would be:
-# of AZB posts
-AZB rep
-are they a previous TAR PPV viewer?
-do they frequent live streams (not sure if you could get any data on this from the ustream streamers or not...)

Those things would show how dedicated they are to the sport of pool on the internet and the live streaming of pool. I would think that long time posters and frequent viewers of live streaming would be much more likely to be dedicated to this task, and I threw in the previous TAR PPV customer, since you might want to give preferential treatment to one of your supporters, as a thank you.

Another thing you could do would be to have a "test run" using one of the live streams...have people watch and whoever gives you the neatest and most accurate stats....but that would require some sort of control to determine what was accurate so that may not be feasible.

That's what I would do too.

Also, I would consider having people work for no more at 3 hours at the time. I have done stats before at matches and it is a killer after a couple of hours. I would never do stats in front of the computer for like 8 hours in a row.

I think it depends on how much detail you desire you want for the stats.

I would be glad to make you a spreadsheet for them to document the info you want. I'll even enter it in and compute it when they are finished if you like. I started just keeping track of innings, safes, b&r for Shane/Alex and without a set standard it would not be easy to document.

If you like JCIN, I can email you something to see what you think.

Maybe a score sheet in the booth that is EASY to keep a running total of what stats you're interested in.

KISS. Just hash marks in a column or Xs or Os. Ws or Ls.
Something that would be easy for you or anyone else to read and compile.

Or something you could give the someone in the LIVE audience.

I know when I am watching streams, I get distracted easily. Wife and Kids at home always asking questions.

If you are just interested in Break and Runs, a Win on the Break and consecutive wins by each player, that should easy to create a score sheet.

Someone will always be in the booth, and you have all the chat ppl reminding you to MAKE A MARK when it is necessary.

I nominate this cracker. He would do good with it.

Justin,

As a retired ex-player type guy, I would be interested in helping you in any way I could.

The only drawback I see, in your scenario is (and you allude to it yourself)... would anyone be able to stay glued to the match for what could be a LOT of hours, to compile statistics.

If there were a way for you to record, and send the days match to someone, (who has a LOT of free time)... and that person could write up a short synopsis the next day. He could compile the stats at his leisure (timely of course) and present them when they are complete.

Secondly, how important are "stats" really in the grand scheme of things ?
Wouldn't most viewer's rather have a well written encapsulation, of the flow of the days action ? These are just some of my thoughts on the subject.

Also, other than a public service on your part, the only benefactors of this will be the people who did not, or could not,
avail themselves of your PPV. It is very commendable of you to think of them in that regard.

The job you guys have done for the pool community, is so outstanding, that I am reluctant to think I could add anything you haven't thought over allready.

Good Luck in whatever you do.

Dick

I like this idea, but I think you also have to agree on a methodology. For instance, because I'm a little eccentric and need a life, I studied the Accu-Stats 9-Ball scoring methodology, downloaded the scoresheets and the instructions and scored the Alex Shane Race to 23. I also got a good way through Action Challenge I w/ Shane and Corey, but no kidding, my dog ate it. She was only 3 months and found my steno pad.

I think a couple of other people also mentioned it before, but maybe shifts is the way to go. A 3 hour shift, perhaps? If you were to do this, you would definitely have to have a common methodology and common understanding among all of the scorekeepers. For instance, how do you score a 2-way shot, a miss, a safety, etc.

All this being said, I would be very eager to help TAR in any way I can.

Actually Dick I think it is quite the opposite. Some stats would help to sell DVDs and certainly give a better picture of the game. For instance (all made up):

Stevie Moore broke and ran more than he didn't playing 10 ball
SVB missed only 1 kick the entire match
John Schmidt made a ball on the break in one pocket 1 out of 2 breaks
Buddy Hall put together the longest string of racks in a recorded action match

These are just ideas of stats I would like to know as well as things I would bet on if I knew there would be dependable stats kept.

you could just read some of the play by play that a few people on here have posted while watching matches, There is one in particular that sticks out in my mind. He did such a good job that I felt like I was reading a book on a match, the play by play was awesome and his writing skills were awesome. On were on par with something that went through an editors desk at a publishing house. I wish I could remember the match or poster, but one thing in particular that I can remember was that the lights/power went out during his updates (on his side, not mine).

I remember posting during his commentary so i did a really quick search in the action room.

I think this is it, but I will have to search more when I get time.
