TAR Podcast #22 with Archer and Bustamante. Any Questions?

Busty:
Why do you mechanically pivot your cue while down on your shot versus doing it while standing up?

Ask Busty since shane and Johnny both think he is the toughest and hardest player to beat for the 2 of them..What does He believe is the reason for that and what does he think He does better than the rest of the field that makes him so tough to beat...oh yes...Thanks David parker...

Hated to see a loser in TAR 26

What stood out to me was the speed of JA's game. Made the match easy to watch. Does he feel this helped his performance?

Seems like you see tons of marketing now a days about how low deflection shafts, best billiard table, phenolic tips, perfect balls, magic racks, etc have changed the game so to that end:

Question for both since they have been around the game for an extended period of time, do they think past champions level of play was better/worse/same as current players?

Would you attribute any difference in level of play to equipment, if so in what way?

Tell us about your Stroke

Both Mr. Bustamonte and Mr. Archer have of course proven without question that they are both about as good as a person can get at pool. That said their techniques are so completely different as to be almost incomparable.

Johnny archer has to my eye a super consistent pre shot and stroke routine. That Could be used as a text book example. While Mr. Bustamonte like Mr. Archer is very consistent in his pre shot routine he also has something all his own with a unique sort of loopy relaxed stroke that makes it quite difficult to even predict where he will strike the cue ball (especially when drawing a ball).

Could each player please describe their stroke. Struggles they have had with constancy and how they over came them. Specifically when it comes to cueing balls.

Also would they use their own technique as a example for other players to emulate or is it simply their own style that happens to get them results. Like a Alan Hopkins or a Jimmy Moore.

Thank you
Garrett Williams

On the aiming, many people here have specifically claimed Busty uses CTE. I'd like to hear from his own mouth either he does or he doesn't.

Its my understanding many of the Filipinos had in the past "loosey goosey" strokes like Busty, but in current times, they have more conventional strokes. Assuming this is true, does Busty have any insight into why his compatriots have changed, and why his stroke has remained "loosey goosey"?

Thank you.

there is nothing loosey goosey about his stroke, only his practice strokes. many great players over the years have gotten loose this way.

For both: Are pool players born or are they developed through teaching and coaching.

AFTER THEY ANSWER:

If they think some people just play better from the onset, is there any future in getting instruction if you will never play that well.

OR:

If they think instruction is key, who taught them the most about getting to their current level of play and was it something specific they can share.

For both players. What is the biggest advantage that their oppenent posses over them to win?

How long did it takke?

I know Archers story, spent a lot of time in Atlanta, but I'd like Busty to tell us when he really knew he had game, who he beat and how long he took to get to that moment?

Dont think he has ever told that story?

I know it's not exactly pool related, but why not?...

What other sports, games, activities, do they enjoy, and could they have excelled as well in those if they would have put the time that they put into pool?

I'm a pretty firm believer in being world class in something (like pool), very well could have lead to the same type of success in something else (especially when you are talking hand/eye coordination, and the focus and drive it takes to get to the TOP in most any competitive activity).

for busty...last week JA said you were his hardest person to play. who is yours?

for both...what tourny (if multiple winner) was your most memorable win.

I have watched the previous podcasts, where you and Mark have been very clear and vocal about what you think of ABP.

However, in #21 you guys let Johnny too easy of the hook and didn't really confront him with the issue, ABP was mentioned, but you obviously had too much respect for JA to really say what you mean.

I was hoping you could push a bit further, there is obviously a lot of history involving CW vs Mark G here. A good start would be to ask Django how he feels about seeing his own name on the list of players who are a member in ABP and supporting the organisation. I believe he has no idea how he ended up on that list :D. Perhaps JA can enlighten us about that.

Question for Django: There must be some wild stories from gambling in the provinces in the Philippines. Whats the scariest situation you have been in?

Johnny stated that Buddy Hall was the best player he ever played against. How would he (or both he and Busty) rank Earl in his prime? A lot of people think Earl was the best 9 ball player ever? What separates a prime Buddy from a prime Earl or any other top pool player?

For Busty:

Do you like tournament pool or gambling matches better? Why?

For Johnny:

Since Johnny has been aound USA pool awhile, ask him to compare his
younger days in pool vs. today. What did he like or dislike about the older
days, and the same about pool today.

A question for both players.

Are the players from twenty years ago better than the players today?

What do you like the most about being a professional pool player?

What do you dislike about being a professional pool player?

Question for Justin:

"How long do you think this thread will last, before a poster pops in a question about when we'll see another TAR event with Mike Dechaine again?"

-Sean <-- just being an @ss. :p

Both players have achieved a great deal during their careers but it can be argued that JA's career has been more complete. (US Open, multiple world championships, etc.)

Even though JA has more "accolades" than Busty, Francisco is a prohibitive favorite in this match. Why is this????????????
