Last night my mother n law came down with a friend of her's to escape the N.East weather for a few weeks.I was practicing and they were commenting.
I gave them each a cue and showed them how to hold it.Then I showed them how to aim.The 2 of them wound up playing for about an hour. It was fun watching 2 women in their 80s shooting pool and having fun.I had fun just watching. If you ever get a chance to do this, take advantage to introduce someone to the game.It was a blast.

Before I retired from nursing I spent my last year as med nurse in a assisted living home. Most of the ones living there could function quite well but really had nothing to do, so just sat around watching TV.

I got an 8' pool table put in and you wouldn't belive how many played all day long and half the night. In two months you could see a pep in their step, laughing and joking around with one another, and mentaly they were more with it than before the pool table was put in.

I tried to get a few more assisted living places to put in tables but they were a hard sell. Pool really is good medicine for everyone...young or old. I wish more places would put a table or two in. Johnnyt

Props to ya Johnny

Johnnyt: I've spent more time around hospitals and assisted living and rehabs than I would like in the last couple of years re. a family member.

Bless ya brother. It takes a special person to aid and assist in the way you have. Families may not fully realize how much you help their loved ones in these tough times of their lives.

Thank you.

I'm starting to get it.

Thank you. I became a nurse late in life to give something back for a change. I was always a taker before. Johnnyt

My parents are in a local assisted living facility. Neither of them play any pool at all, but there is a small group of very active players there. They have three tables scattered in three different recreation areas (It's a fairly big complex). I did a photo documentary project last year. Several of the players are in their 90's! I interviewed them, too and was surprised to learn that about half of them didn't really take up pool until they got there, although the other half seems to have had the hobby for many years. At that age, health and eyesight are major equalizers.

This lady is one of the most avid players. I believe she is 92.

There is a retirement community not far from my home, and last year, I went over there for about an hour a week for a couple of months to hold classes for anyone who wanted to attend. There were a few gentlemen who were at every class, and several others who attended some or most classes. It was one of the most gratifying things I have done. These folks really appreciated the fact that someone would come out and spend time with them, and work with them.
Not to mention, I got to hear some great stories from "the old days" while I was there.

There is nothing like hanging out and helping out the old folks and listening to their stories. It's a win/win deal. Johnnyt

When we were moving and downsizing, we had to sell our pool table. We were lucky. Some gentlemen from a retirement home came to look at it. We ended up giving them a very good deal and we felt great about it. Don't think we could have found a better home for it!

Bob, you just got a rep my friend.
In this cutthroat, narcicisstic world of cue sports, you are a beacon of hope. A shining light for those of us who live out our pathetic and meager existences thinking only of ourselves and how best our fellow-man may serve our own needs and never once, mind you, considering the wants and desires of the other kazillion human beings that share this fragile sphere of a planet we call home.
And one of them was you mother-in-law!

Bob, about fifteen minutes after I read your original post I called my Mom (true story) and asked her if she needed me to take her to the super-market or the Wal-mart. She's been widowed since October and doesn't drive.
Funny how it works, ain't it?

I wasn't going to mention this but my mother N law is from Pennsylvania. We get to talking cues and she knows 1 of the most famous CMs wife of all times. One thing leads to another and I was on the phone with her for 45 minutes talking about her past husband and son. Truly an amazing experience.

How old be the elderly?

Wa'chu considerin' elderly , boy. Me and my amigos could probably whomp your ass on or off the table. But I have to admit , it certainly helps our mental awareness and probably puts off dementia for a year or two.:kma:Here's a pool joke from our retirement community: What does a women in our retirement community do to her azzhole before she has sex? She drops him off at the pool hall. But seriously folks a lot of us old farts shoot pretty straight as long as our seeing eye dogs are well trained. We can't hear or see too well so like The Who's ,"Tommy," we play by instinct. The electric bill at our pool hall is very low because we don't bother to turn the lights on.When we call a ball in a pocket the other players acknowledge it by yelling," WHAT?" Players are not allowed to use their walkers as a bridge. Some of the older fellows wear a bib to keep from drooling on the felt.Visiting hot grand daughters are forbidden
to enter the pool room for fear of a wave of heart attacks. One real advantage is that we never have to take a potty break because
everyone is wearing Depends.:nanner:

Do I sound a little sarcastic? I hope the fcuk I do. I know you guys mean well. I just don't like being old without being very wise.:barf:

Steve...Along with visiting Boys & Girls Clubs, I have also been donating time at senior centers across the country. Recently I was in Broken Arrow OK, and spent about 3 hours with the folks at the senior center there. They have four tables, and about 3-4 dozen active players, including several women. Be it an assisted living home, a senior center, a YMCA, or a Boys & Girls Club, there is plenty of opportunity for all of us to donate a little bit of our time. I can tell you from the heart, that it makes a GREAT deal of difference in these people's lives (no matter what the age)!
