Team USA Still in the Lead

Being proud of those early wins is like a 25 year old just schooled by his 20 year old brother in basketball being extremely proud of how he used to always win when he was 12 and his brother was 7.

Lolololol. So true

It's little consolation to me that the US was able to consistently drub Europe back in the day s when the ratio of US nine ball players to European nine ball players was at least 50-1.

More like 500-1 to be honest as most of Europe and especially the UK play on blackball tables.
It is only in recent years that Europe has taken nine ball seriously, but there are still at least ten nine ball players in the US for every one in Europe.

Don't think people in Europe take it seriously at all to be honest. Just a few really.

I have made the point regarding the number of players.

A British poster suggested yesterday that the UK has just 300 nine ball players. And yet, a team UK of Appleton, Shaw, Boyes, Peach and Gray would give Team USA all it could handle.

UK players play cue sports that require much better fundamentals than are needed for American pool. There are dozens really who, faced with a life or death situation were "made" to play american pool, would wipe the floor with any US team.

9 ball and indeed american pool generally is virtually non existent in the UK. Apart from the GB9 ball tour, it is basically non existent.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I don't necessarily agree with all of them, especially the action v. tournament play, but it's nice to read someone share their opinion in a comprehensive manner.

I do agree that the MC format favors the European style of play -- short races to 5 and slop counts. Of course, the equipment is kind of interesting this year. :o

Didn't hear you complaining the first ten years or so when the USA dominated - under the same format.

When are you going to accept that really it's the USA that has gone backwards?

In the first dozen years of the MC Europe filled their team from Snooker players. The U'S had played pool for over 100 years, while most countries in Europe just started playing it. At this time Europe and Asia have passed the U.S in pool. IMO you could take the U.S.A's BEST MC team over the years and put them up against the last 6-8 Europe's teams and the U.S would lose. Johnnyt

Very wise Johnnyt and being honest about things is better than being dilusional

In reality the MC is a very long match, with a potential of twenty one Races to Five! In a typical MC, anywhere from 140 to 160 games of pool are played. This is NOT a short match by any means. The only difference between this and the so-called full length matches is that more than one player is involved for each side. They are playing a match Race to Eleven, with single sets of Race to Five. That's a lot of pool any way you look at it!

In this format the best team will usually win. Once upon a time it was the USA, with players like Rempe, Varner, Strickland, Davenport and Archer. They were clearly the superior players at that time and won easily year after year. All that has changed over the last decade and now the Europe teams with Appleton, Immonen, Hohmann, Souquet, Feijen, Boyes, Van Den Berg, etc. are clearly the better teams. And that's really how it is folks. :groucho:

More wise words from a wise and knowledgable person :thumbup:

You seriously need to get a room with yourself young lady.

I say young lady because of course you post like a child and whine like a woman

Yeah yeah, sorry, not taking the bait. Really nice try though.

i also bleed red, white and blue but that won't allow me to deny that, as of now, europe is the superior team and it doesn't matter where the match is played, type of equipment, etc

perhaps our guys would be more focused/competitive if prize monies were distributed based on measurable level of play, or, the event is changed to "winners take all"

the truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off

Love your footer. Some of your compatriots should learn from that...

Steve Davis?

The Davis Cup? Then they can invite the Asians

Well, you may get your wish. This could be the last year for Team USA, thanks to the words written by some of the American so-called "pool fans."

I think Steve Davis was more of a snooker player, right? If they went with a snooker champ, I'd rather see Alex Higgins' name used.

At this juncture, it doesn't matter. When Americans join with Europeans and rip apart the team, the end of pool in America, as bad as it already is, will come to fruition.

I'm a die-hard Washington Redskins fan, and they aren't doing well, but I still wear my colors and root for the home team. I see Andrew Cleary rooting for the Cleveland Browns. Even though they had had a long losing streak, he still roots for his home team. It's fun to do that.

In pool here in the States, there is none of that. It's all about tearing the team and its coach down, ripping them apart from limb to limb, and blaming this one or that one for the loss.

Enjoy the Cup today. It may be the last one for Team USA. Thanks for the memories.
